Have fun running, keep fit, and fight middle age spread. Run consistently and injury free. Maintain a healthy balance between running and other life priorities. Encourage my ever-aging running buddies to keep running so we can continue to share runs on the trail instead of rocking chairs.

Personal:

Blessed to be married to Karen for 30 years. We have six children (4 daughters/2 sons) ages 16 to 30, and one wonderful granddaughter.

12 miles @ easy/hiking pace

Larry, Jolene, Wayne and I hiked/ran up to Rock Pile then east on a trail called Middle Earth that was recommended to us last week. The weather was cold and the trail mostly uphill at the start, but still enjoyable. As the sun came up it warmed up, the skies became crystal clear, and the trail changed to mostly level and downhill. The scenery and valley vistas were amazing. The company was even better.

We met a couple of women, from Ogden and Indiana, who had a map of the trails but couldn't quite figure out where they were. We ended up walking with them for several miles until we got them back on a trail towards their destination.

At one point in the middle, as Wayne and I were running together on a single track trail through trees and frost-sparkled grass high on the mountainside Wayne commented on how people who have never run in the mountains don't know what they are missing. I heartily agreed.

At one point, Larry, who has been struggling to get back into shape, commented about being weak. I tried to point out that weak people don't get up on dark, cold mornings and go run/hike 12 miles.

As usual, there are some great life parallels in this run. I'll leave those to the reader, or maybe save them for a future lesson or talk at church. It was an amazing morning. I am truly blessed by the beauty in the world and in the people around me. Sure life's hard sometimes, for everybody, and usually often, but if we look around and count our blessings, we can begin to appreciate how blessed we are, and how much our Heavenly Father truly does love us.

3 miles @ 8:48/mi. Neighborhood 5K route.

My new (refurbished) Garmin arrived yesterday. It worked great this morning. It feels brand new. So far I'm pleased with my decision to go with the $69 factory refurbish instead of spending hundreds on a new watch.

I was on a business trip to Washington State Archive in Olympia, WA. I left the Double Tree hotel just before 5:30am. It was dark when I left, and still dark when I returned an hour later. I was blessed that there was no rain and it wasn't too cold. Being a state capital, there were lots of big, old government buildings downtown separated by parks and green space. I was worried at first about running in the dark, but the walks and trails were all well lit, even the 7 switch backs from Captiol Lake up to the Capitol Building. I really enjoyed my foot tour of downtown Olympia. I think there might be a niche market for a travel agent who specializes in sightseeing tours around the world that cater to runners. It's a great way to see the sights.

6 miles @ 9:53/mi  Solo on Murdoch trail north

Snow was falling but not sticking to the roads. The weather has been pretty good the past couple of weeks but life got in the way of me running. It figures I would wait until it was snowing to get out and run again. Actually, that's okay. When I saw the snow falling this morning, I felt anticipation not dread. I enjoyed the run. I don't know if running will ever be as important to me as it once was, but I think it will always be an old friend that I try to visit as often as I can.

BTW, I have been pretty good at getting in my HICT routine about 3 times a week. I've noted some improvement. When I started months ago I could only do (don't laught) 6 push ups without stopping. I recently did 20.
