Revised Race Report.... :-(

I started thinking about how happy I was with this race and wanting to verify it was a "REAL" PR.  Originally I didn't think to ask if the course was "certified" so I decided to dig in and find the answer. The advertised race information did not say anything about it being certified but I did find, in another place, a comment that indicated it was. Not feeling confident in that information I decided to e-mail the race director. Here's his response: "Congratulations on a great finish.  The course is not certified and is about 50 meters short." AHHHHH...So I guess it was not a true PR.

During the race I had my watch set for: Current Pace, Average Pace, Heart Rate and Time. When I finished the race I stopped my watch and noted the Average Pace at 6:14 and the time at exactly 19:21. Now I know why my watch measured the course a little short. On top of all this I accidentally deleted the last portion of the race (the part after the 3 mile mark) so I don't really have the exact time for that section. I came up with the :30 by simple math adding the first three mile together and subtracting the overall finish time.

Now what do I do....??? Eat crow and go on I guess. In my defense, I was at a 6:14 pace for 3:?? miles and I believe I could have hung on for the extra 50 meters! (How long does it take to run 50 meters anyway?)

YEAH....I finally broke 20:00 in the 5K!!!

 Actually I smashed it with a 19:21.

This was the biggest 5K I had ever run. There were 1450 runners (lots of walkers).

I warmed up with a 2 mile jog and got the start line about 5 minutes before the race started. I lined up fairly close to the front. On my first mile I just tried to stay right at my 6:25 goal pace. My first mile came in at exactly 6:25 and it felt good. Mile two was a littler tougher but I pulled out another 6:25 but was thinking I might start to fade on the last mile. Halfway through the last mile I thought to myself, "I've only got a little more than half a mile to go" so I decided to put my body in torture mode and picked up the pace quite a bit running at a sub-5 pace most of the way. Mile 3 came in at 6:01 and the last .1 was :30.

Now I believe I can break 19:00 on the 5K!

It's amazing what a body can do when it's pushed...even an old one :-)

Oh...I won the Master's Division (although I don't think this was a very competitive race even though it had a lot of entries). One last note: my Garmin measured the course a few steps short of 3.1 but I did cheat the tangents as much as I could on every turn.

Great job IJR! That cruise must've done the trick for you by giving the body some needed R&R. I think I need to follow that same approach. Happy Thanksgiving to you & yours.

From rAtTLeTrAp on Thu, Nov 22, 2012 at 14:28:10 from 24.19.80.36

Congrats! My first sub-20 was at a turkey trot too. That runner's high lasted all day :)

No such thing as cheating the tangents as long as you stay on the course. They certify courses by measuring the shortest route including tangents.

A big congrats is in order! Well done.

WoHoo! Nice job! I guess you can check that one off your list. Way to smash through that 20 min. barrier in a big way!

From flatlander on Sat, Nov 24, 2012 at 10:48:12 from 76.31.26.153

That's super, incredibly fast, big congratulations. If 19:21 gets 18th place, then it isn't really a slow field, I think you should put that Master's trophy front and center. Congratulations.

From DLTheo on Sat, Nov 24, 2012 at 11:02:41 from 76.28.161.119

Way to go IJR, that is a great time! You definitely earned your turkey, and extra helpings of potatoes! You're right that you should be able to break 19 pretty soon. I like your pacing strategy, too.

From I Just Run on Sat, Nov 24, 2012 at 11:27:02 from 166.137.156.173

Thanks guys,

Russ, I actually ran all my training runs plus a lot of cross training while on the criuise.

RT, I was pretty happy all day. My daughter won second in her age group too! My son and wife both walked...it was a fun day!

Thanks again Rye and Dave. Now its time to set another goal :-)

Flat, I actually suprised myself on this race. It was the first flat course I've run which really helped.

DL, The pacing strategy really worked, now to see if I can just cut about 10 seconds off the first two miles I'll be there :-)

From SlowJoe on Sat, Nov 24, 2012 at 16:50:59 from 108.238.205.175

Wow, huge PR, congrats! That is the kind of 5k we all knew you could run. And the sub-19 is definitely yours for the taking at this point.

Thanks Joe, Your comment means a lot to me!

From Tom K on Sun, Nov 25, 2012 at 20:17:01 from 108.9.135.41

Strong work, IJR! 1,450 runners is a lot for a 5k, isn't it?

From Lily on Sun, Nov 25, 2012 at 20:52:25 from 67.199.178.95

Oh FUN! Way to go! I la la love it when runners can crack the 20 minute trap in the 5k!!

From I Just Run on Mon, Nov 26, 2012 at 20:53:28 from 12.162.141.2

Tom,

1,450 seems like a lot to me. The 5K's I usually run only have a hundred or two.

Lily,

I wasn't expecting to be 39 seconds below the 20:00 but then again, I've never run on a flat course. Now I'm believing I can break the 19:00 mark soon and eventually break 18:00. We'll see if an old guy can do it :-)

From Lily on Mon, Nov 26, 2012 at 21:01:58 from 67.199.178.95

Of course you can. Believing in it is part of the goal

;-)

From I Just Run on Mon, Nov 26, 2012 at 21:04:00 from 166.137.156.162

Yes, and I like goals! :-)
