Long run day! I was a little dissipointed with my run today but I probably had too high expectations.  I was expecting this to be easier after my successful long run last week but for some reason I struggled in accomplishing my goal. My plan was to run every mile a few seconds faster than last week but I became skeptical soon after I started because my HR jumped immediatly to 155. I know, from experience, below 155 is a comfortable effort for me I can sustain the effort for a long period of time but when my HR get to 160 I begin to labor. I can maintain above 160 for about 13 miles (while running a half marathon) but that's about the limit. There are a couple of factors that probably contributed in a negative way today such as the weather being 10-15 degrees hotter and the hard tempo run on Thursday. Even being a little dissipointed I still consider this a good run since it's way beyond what the perscribed pace was for today's RLRF schedule.

I was a little disappointed in this run compared to last week's 20 miler. I planned and expected to run every mile slightly faster than last week's run but at mile 18 I strated to slow down. For some reason my HR started out quite a bit higher on this run and when it peaked at 160 I really started feeling fatigued.

1 Timothy 6:6-11

6 But godliness with contentment is great gain, 7 for we brought nothing into the world, and[a] we cannot take anything out of the world. 8 But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. 9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

Gosh Preston, I'm thinking you are looking pretty good for your race. I ran a hard workout this week and it feels like I'm still in recovery mode. Kudos for getting in another good 20 miler.

From JG on Sun, Jan 08, 2012 at 20:24:19 from 71.59.27.33

You do not have my permission to be disappointed in this run ... period!

Nice job!!

Thanks Rye & JG,

I need to choose my words better I'm not a very good wordsmith. I should have said something like "I was pleased with this run but fell slightly short of my goal"...:-)

From derhammer on Mon, Jan 09, 2012 at 18:11:56 from 192.156.110.40

This is a solid run. I am guestimating here but with this average pace (7:40?) you would have a 3:22 marathon.

Meant to add: and this is only a training run!

From I Just Run on Mon, Jan 09, 2012 at 18:40:12 from 67.79.11.242

Avg Pace was 7:42. ...If I could hold this pace, but I couldn't have at this point in time. I still have 7 weeks before the marathon but I also have to drop my pace to 7:30 :-) We'll see how it goes in the next few weeks, hopefully I'll improve and be able to keep my HR down to around 150-155 at the 7:30 pace.

From JG on Mon, Jan 09, 2012 at 19:01:45 from 71.59.27.33

I would say if you are exceeding the recommended paces for the training plan you are following, that is designed to have you peaking at the right time ... you are on the right track! Just remember, training runs are NOT supposed to be peak performances! If they are, you won't be peaking at the right time.

From rAtTLeTrAp on Mon, Jan 09, 2012 at 19:13:16 from 24.18.125.122

Just for kicks, try doing a long run without watching your heart rate. It's a great fitness indicator if you look at the trend over time, but I find that it just psychs me out more than anything if I watch it during my runs.

From I Just Run on Mon, Jan 09, 2012 at 19:13:45 from 67.79.11.242

It's interesting that the "magical" 7:26 (I'm calling it 7:30) pace is only run three times before the marathon. Week 5 (10 miles) week 3 (13 miles) and week 2 (10 miles). It seems a big jump from the approx. 7:45 pace all to the 15-20 mile long runs done. I'm sure, even if I have to back off a little, I'll be much closer to 3:16 than my previous 3:38 time. I hate to even say 3:38...that sounds like an eternity :-(

From rAtTLeTrAp on Mon, Jan 09, 2012 at 19:15:22 from 24.18.125.122

Oh, great run by the way! You will be more than ready in 7 weeks.

From I Just Run on Mon, Jan 09, 2012 at 19:20:12 from 67.79.11.242

Thanks RT, that's a good idea. I'll just turn off the HR screen next time. My next long run is only 15 @ 7:46. It should be a piece of cake although I may drop it to about 7:35 :-)

From derhammer on Mon, Jan 09, 2012 at 19:21:44 from 192.156.110.40

I agree with Rattletrap - ditch the HR monitor for a few runs - for sure don't wear it during your marathon.

BTW- you won't be running a hard tempo run 2 days before your marathon, either. There's a lot to be said for proper taper, fresh legs, and a full tank of glycogen.

From rAtTLeTrAp on Mon, Jan 09, 2012 at 19:30:08 from 24.18.125.122

I always wear the HR monitor even during races, but I don't have it display on the watch ever. It is what it is, and I can either keep running or quit. I do love to look over the data later to see how it compares to previous runs and measure my progress, but there's no sense in worrying about it while I'm takin' care of business.

From Steam8 on Mon, Jan 09, 2012 at 19:33:07 from 166.70.55.77

WOWOWOWOW!!! What a run! and with nothing on board...no Gu or anything? WOWZZA!! Your program is working! NICE!!!

From JG on Mon, Jan 09, 2012 at 19:57:24 from 71.59.27.33

DH makes a very good point! Well trained, rested legs deliver on race day! Follow the plan & believe in it!

For what it is worth, when I got my BQ at a 7:39 pace (granted it was at St. George), but in my entire training I only averaged sub 8's on the 3 runs! 2 months before I ran 7 miles @ 7:53, 1 month before I ran 7:03 @ a 10k, & 2 weeks before I did 11 miles @7:30.

RLRF has you doing a whole heck of a lot more than that. My races always blow my training runs away ... because I train to race, not race when I train.

From I Just Run on Mon, Jan 09, 2012 at 20:10:26 from 166.147.76.129

I'm excited to see how my half race goes in there weeks. I think it will be a great indicator where Im at in the training.

From JG on Mon, Jan 09, 2012 at 21:25:07 from 71.59.27.33

You are right where you need to be ... just look at the result of your last 10 workouts!!! Just be careful, 2 fast 20 milers in 8 days is not a good thing.

From I Just Run on Tue, Jan 10, 2012 at 13:04:09 from 67.79.11.242

Time to throttle back... Going off good advice my next runs are going to be closer to the RLRF program! Gotta remember I'm training for a MARATHON and not a sprint! Also need to remember I've only been running 1-1/2 years, I need to give my body more time to adapt.

From flatlander on Thu, Jan 12, 2012 at 13:50:34 from 198.207.244.102

Good run and very interesting commentary. I think I tend to put too much emphasis on my training times, but I'm too OCD to do anything else.

From I Just Run on Thu, Jan 12, 2012 at 13:59:51 from 67.79.11.242

Flat,

I seem to treat every training run as a competition, not a good thing for where my age and stage of running...But if I were young and really fast I might be dangerous :-)
