I just realized I've only run 20+ miles six times in my life and one of those was my one marathon race.

Today was supposed to be my 18 miler Long Run 9 weeks into my RLRF Marathon Training Program. On all of my previous long runs I've been unsure about the outcome. Today I went into this run with the confidence that I could complete it well. The weather was perfect for me at 48 degrees to start. I ran my somewhat hilly route but concentrated on keeping my HR around 150 for the first 12 miles, after 12 my HR began to rise so I switched to concentrating on keeping my pace at about 7:45. HR at about 150 feels comfortable but as noted I can't keep up a sub-8 pace after about 12. This HR rise happens on all of my runs over 12.

I believe this is one of my best training runs ever based on the time and distance. I felt really good even at about mile 17. The last 3 miles are on the hillest part of my route but I was determined to keep my avg. at 7:45 so I ran through the rising HR. Mile 20 is pretty much uphill and I pushed for a low 7 on this mile.

Maybe the best thing of the run is the recovery. I feel good after just an hour or so. Previously, on my long runs, I've been worn out for the entire day. Oh....and I ran 20 instead of 18 that was on the schedule...!

This was one of my best training runs ever. Slowed to a walk at miles 3, 6, etc. to get a drink instead of trying to run through. I think this is best for me.

Ezekiel 36:25-27
"Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. Your filth will be washed away, and you will no longer worship idols. And I will give you a new heart with new and right desires, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony heart of sin and give you a new, obedient heart. And I will put my Spirit in you so you will obey my laws and do whatever I command."

That really is a great run, every mile in the 7s. Congrats, you are definitely stepping up a few levels in your running.

Sweet run ... consistent, fast, and a kickin' Mile 20!! Awesome job, Preston!

Happy New Year!!!

Sorry for the delayed response...

I have not run Cowtown before, but from what I have heard it is hilly....has hilly as Texas can get. We start running parts of the course next week during our Saturday runs, so I might have insight in a few weeks. Last year it was pretty cold and windy, it was just after the February Freeze.

Great run today....GO FROGS!

Nice run! Your avg. HR looks great! Don't worry about slowing down to take a drink.

I always walk through water stations, even in a race. I think it saves me more time than I lose with all the choking and gagging that happens if I try to drink on the run.

From flatlander on Sat, Dec 31, 2011 at 19:47:16 from 76.31.26.153

That is a platinum run, Preston, just very impressive. 7:09 for mile 20? Unbelievable. Happy New Year, and here's hoping for many more great runs. (Love today's scripture, by the way.)

Thanks JimmySG, Hoping to and hitting my goal in Feb.

SlowJoe, About 5 more years of this and thing should be good!

Thanks Rye, Yes it was and thanks for your friendship and fun sense of humor :-)

JG, Thanks for your advice and encouragment. You've really helped me this year.

Jody, Keep me posted on what you learn about Cowtown. I've run the Trinity Trails before, they are nice with only a few rolling (small) hills.

RatleTrap, I feel like I get a boost when I actually walk every once in a while and am able to catch my breath. My HR will drop 10 beats in only a few seconds.

Flat, Thanks I'm hoping for many more. 7:09 ...not a mis-type, I wish I'd had my watch set on lap time so I could have pushed for a 6:?? :-)

Okay, I'm re-motivated; very nice run Preston; that is, you made quick work out of this 20 miler!

From Steam8 on Mon, Jan 02, 2012 at 22:52:40 from 166.70.55.77

WOW! What a great run! I can't believe how fast you are getting! I am so impressed! When is your next race??

From I Just Run on Tue, Jan 03, 2012 at 10:54:56 from 67.79.11.242

Thanks Dave,

It seems like it's coming together better now :-)

Hi Rossy,

Good to hear from you! It didn't seem that quick but it was enjoyable!

Steam,

Very relative term :-)...thanks. My next race is the 3M Half Marathon in Austin on Jan. 29th. It's just a training run before my Marathon in Ft Worth on Feb. 26 but I'm still hoping for PR!
