Short-Term Running Goals:

This year I am looking to race a bit more and hope to improve. I have started to train a bit differently using a more well rounded program. Including tempo and speed work (which up to this point I have slacked off on) Would like to be somewhere near the top of my A.G. it makes racing more fun. Also helping motivate people to become more active and enjoy getting out and enjoying all life has to offer.

Long-Term Running Goals:

have not really set long term goals just love the great benefits physically as well as mentally that have come with running and look to continue to grow and improve

Personal:

Married to an amazing woman who I get to enjoy living and loving life for all its worth. From our urban farm to exploring the backcountry. I have 2 boys who are about grown. My passion for running has not diminished over the years just evolved into an integral part of life like it always has been but a little different. Lucky for me Tiff puts up with my running obsession and doesn't complain too much.

Welcome to the blog! Another Riverton runner, there are so many of us out here (and in Herriman). I love to run outside, I always see so many people!!

Have you thought about running the Riverton Half in March? It is a good little course and they do a very good job! And I will be manning one of the water stations this year instead of running it, so I can cheer you on!

best of luck to you with your goals.

Kept rolling the thoughts of up coming races and hatching a plan for getting  more speed work in and increasing my vo2maxgot to do some research I am thinking

Any way didn't get to running until 3:40 finally got my I phone to log a workout for a change lol a little sluggish start but after about mile 3 started to get back into the rythm and the rest went very nicely ,hurried and showered before leaving for bowling still with tired legs but feel great after all :)

race this morning felt good going out although a little tentative but going to try to leave it out there hit mile one feeling good stepping up the pace mile 1.5 a little faster yet  2 mile mark striding out keeping the breathing deep and trying not to chop 2.5 mi time to give it what i had left passing a few more runners sprinting it out finish 20.32 new PR very pleased only thing thinking need to work on the first part get it faster but happy with my run over all

after giving myself a few hours to recover from the 5k went out this afternoon for 13.25 moderate pace miles thought the run this morning would slow me down more than it did but kept an even decent pace thru the whole run although the last 3.5 mi started feeling the fatigue creeping in

wow what a day got up a little earlier to get my run before going to get mom out of the hospital thankfully she is getting discharged today feeling much better healthier and stronger than she has for a long time. starting out it was a little misty out not too cold taking the fires two miles at a little slower warming up pace about mile 3 in the river bottoms started to lengthen the stride and get into a nice rythm good breathing ,up to state street air clearing a little feeling great pushing the pace a little faster get into a new zone trying to work myself into some good cardio rangeover to 114th south up to 7th east and back south taking a little side route east to 9th or so east through the neighborhood back to 123rd turning west and another little increase in speed for the trek back west not to the full out pace but feeling it expanding my lungs holding this down through the river bottoms up the other side keeping the turnover constant and up beatback to 27th west turned back north slowing a bit to start warm down very productive day running now off to the hospital on a great spring like day

I run to and from work 4 days a week. It's great on gas, I only use a tank of gas a month plus it saves a lot of time because you are eliminating drive time. I highly recommend it.

When are you going to get a watch?

Are you running the Salt Lake Marathon? You only need to hit 3:30 and you'll qualify for Boston 2011. Based on your race times, you've got this time in the bag!

Good job getting out there when you're not feeling up to it. It's amazing how after a few miles you wind up feeling okay. What's even more amazing is how your body is screaming at you to stop when you first start your run. Eventually, you win, put in a decent run and feel great for powering through it.

Paul, way to go! Damn, you are fast. We went 4th and 6th, I am happy for both of us. 3:24 with a pit stop, wow! You've got to feel great about a 4th place finish. I know I was surprised with 6th. Did you run this without watch? I can't tell you how much this drives me nuts. I quickly lost sight of you after you passed me, I am very happy I did not see you again, I knew you had to have run a great race. How about the mile 25? It was a mountain! You're fist marathon and you BQ'd, wow, that's very impressive. When we enter a race together, it's obvious I'm competing for 2nd place at best. I couldn't lose to a finer person. I'm looking forward to seeing you again soon.

got out early tonight to try and beat the rain started out a bit sluggish at first plus getting a few sprinkles here and there by the time i hit 104th and 27th west it was a little more than the occasional drop here and there but i was loosening up nicely geeting into the groove once i got almost to 114th south the rain had almost stopped but it was still windy not my fav lol keeping the feet churning back around to 126th and redwood north on the last leg feeling the mileage in the legs but still upbeat finished with a warm down and stretches good times

Nice mileage this week. I have a question for you. Your daily mileage always ends in a decimal. Do you go out for a run and them sit down at the computer and map it to get the distance?

As for my planned races, Desnews for sure, most likely the 10k. I'm toying with runing the marathon instead. I'd like to find something in June, I guess I should start looking.

From prlman on Sun, May 23, 2010 at 03:08:16 from 166.205.142.125

Ya I usually map it out next morning guess

I could leave the parts off just force of habit I was looking in June something short since I have ragnar relay in the middle you should fair well if you decide on the marathon I was thinking the 10k in July being as I am running the Bryce half the full would be a stretch

after spending the day on the golf course saturday and playing in the casino sat night woke up and decided i was ready for some running feeling like yuck after a day off time to run the town so to speak running west from the nugget past the rainbow and then starting uptowards smiths and the end of town kept going up the hill keeping a good churning tempo with my feet up and up to the top of the hill just before it the road meets with i80 then turning around and downhill striding out back past smiths and the peppermill feeling good passing through town the morning was way windy but didnt let that dampen my spirits quickly making my way to the very east end of town before the road turns into offramp crossing then back to the casino again stiffened up a bit on the bus ride home even though i had a couple hours of wandering before we came back but it was a great run out there just the same with some different scenery

running twice a day is wonderful, I highly recommend it. I've been doing it for about two years. it's a great workout, doubles make you strong. For me, I do it more out of necessity, it's a schedule-work-family time issue, doubles fit nicely with my life routine.

So with time ticking away so to speak pushing myself a bit harder than before but feeling sssoo much better picked up the pace rounding the corner at 2700 w and 104th started to really stride somewhere between 10k pace and h/m pace lungs really opening up good to push myself once in a while .

Thinking as I turned west on 126th I am in the home stretch so to speak then the rain starts to come light at first and increasing every few steps refreshing cooling but the wind was not so much

Finally at redwood soaked and rejuvinated stopped by my house grabbed my back pack and finished out the remaining mile to the ball park to stretch and watch my youngest yay they did not win but as always it was a treat to watch him play

I must have found a new gear or something because although I was not working as hard I was covering ground very quickly yay think I tapped int a new zen like running form that allows me to go faster and farther without as much effort what an amazing discovery

Was set to get my run in on the track at olympus high school while trav practiced before his game but when we got there the field was a soggy mess un-playable so we meandered around a bit and back home.

Being that i was all dressed to run and all went out under the overcast skies for some r&r running and relaxing lol turned north and into my temple loop route (119th to 90th on redwood east to 13th west south to 128th so west to redwood back to 114th and then finish at 119th ) has some rolling ups and downs without being monotonous.

A bit muggy and i was a little over dressed but not really too bad not being usrd to running while its light out lol and the clouds burning off was good change of pace the roads had dried fairly well but there were still some soggy spots in gravel and squishy mud tried my best to avoid them as much as possible

Lately been trying to take a day off a week usually fridays since work and kids and everything ends up being a very busy evening but feel so bla and all deciding maybe even just gettiing 3 or 5 in even if its on the treadmill my body seems to like that better i think

leg # 13 8.5 mi :Van 2 was running behind so i got to wait around at the exchange a little longer but understandably Dov was really getting worked not been as strong since recent treatments and incidents in the last few weeks alas thats why we are here raising funds and awareness :) and running which is a definite bonus. so setting off uphill out of snow basin getting the blood pumping right off still feeling good not much drain from this morning chopping up the hill into easy to stride pieces not as fast as this morning but nice and relaxed up to the top and start the down hill striding and stretching it out at sunset feeling exhilarated mind just goes blank to its happy place and before i know its done 55 min   although i really could feel the downhill in my legs now was glad the longer ones were finished

Glad you're liking the doubles. I love them. It's a good way to get in more mileage without taking a huge chunk of time out of your day. I think doubles make you much stronger too.

This one is a money maker. I copied this from the race website. "$3,000 cash prize will be divided between the top 5 overall male and female 1/2 Marathon runners. Shuttles will be available."

Let me know how much you make.

Run hard, run fast and don't save anything for the DesNews 10K.

a m   so after taking three days off of running (but far from running my butt off lol) which i have not done in quite a long time back at it today started out on a great morning run a little warm to start decided the east side route feeling good once i reached state and 114th south went after the hill chopping up as i went up and up and up to 13th east making the turn was a bit winded after a couple blocks back into my zone and stretching out the downhill getting uncomfortably warm out now good thing i was on my way home feeling very good

afternoon after my ball game in the sweltering heat  relaxed and re hydrated  got on my bike to run a few errands mapping out a nice 12 mile loop at a smooth steady pace not pushing too much except when the wind really picked up

pm trying out a new route on the canal access dirt road from the get go it was hot and muggy starting to get dark and still no relief but very nice trail type running without car traffic and city noise so mixed emotions with the route i think with cooler conditions this will be great so a good solid recovery easy on the legs run

pm 11.4 miles ventured up to the east side wanted to get the river bottom hills in working strength into the run up to state then south and up to 9th east looping back and hitting the hills again keeping mental check on arms and legs being moving together and keeping fluid motion not being choppy not pushing too hard keeping a steady  decent pace

Do you have the Saucony Kinvara? I'm interested in that shoe. Did you find it locally? If so, where?

I'd love to go race with you in Cedar City on the 18th (Sept) but I've got a lot going on that day. Particularly Utah at New Mexico. Watching football is pretty big in our little family.

My next race is a little 5K in Sandy. It's Friday August 27th at midnight. It's called Moonlight something or other. Should be a lot of fun. I have no idea what to expect but running at midnight sounds fun. Staying up that late will be a challenge for this boring old man.

Did you burn through your yellow Sauconys?

Here's the Crocs story. It all started because I wanted to run a marathon in racing flats. About 3 years ago, I changed my foot strike. converted from heal striker to forefoot striker. Took a long time to build the muscles. Prior to this I was racing 5 & 10K's in my saucony flats. I loved them and wanted to run more in them more. This last year I figured I'd try to do my marathon training long runs in the flats (20 milers). It put a lot of stress on my feet but they kept getting stronger. After the marathon I was thinking about finding a cheep shoe to run in. I knew I didn't need much of a shoe. The 100 dollar sauconys are wonderful, but buying a pair every month is rough on the budget. I had been reading how Sasha has been running in Crocs, or water clogs in his case, I happened to have a pair here at home, so I threw them on and end of story. between the two pair i'm running in I have at least 1200 miles. you can buy them at Crocs.com for about 29.99 a pair. I have a pair of "Classic" crocs, and "Beach" crocs. I suggest the "Beach", they fit a little better. You need to wear socks. I did a 5 mile run without socks and got a bunch of blisters on the TOP of my feat, so I immediatly went back to socks. They are a little weird at first, but the suckers stay on your feet. It takes a while to trust them. I wear a size 10.5 running shoe, in the "Beach" style I run in an XL 10/11, perfect fit. I don't know if you are a heal striker or forefoot striker, but either way I think they will work for you. You're already doing 80 miles a week, your feet are already pretty damn strong. Give it a shot, can't go wrong for 30 bucks and I'm pretty certain you'll like them. FYI, you'll get a lot of funny looks. I also get a lot of "I didn't know you could run in those", to which I answer, "you're right, YOU can't, you've got to have pretty strong feet". (I don't know if that's true or not but I say it anyway, runners pride!) I'm real curious to know how these will work out. Let me know if you still have questions, as you can see, I love to talk about it and I'd like to see you be able to get by on 30 bucks instead of a 100. Save the Sauconys for racing.

pm 4.1 miles my last leg of the race tired and hungry sleep deprived and all have one last run to get up for legs worn and a bit stiff  from not enough stretching and warm up /warm down time hurrying from one exchange to the next not much rest just want to make a good show the last time out fairly easy leg a couple hills but not bad

Okay, now I'm up to date, I just read all your entries. So you ran three legs? a 6 miler in the early evening, then another 6 at about 3 in the morning and then a for miler after that? Tell me more about running at sea level, I'm very interested in what you have to say.

From prlman on Sat, Sep 04, 2010 at 21:27:29 from 24.2.64.196

ok so i finally got some time to write back this is the second of there type things i have done(recall the ragnar in june )have another ragnar coming in vegas next month this one though i was planning on just staying within my training pace and enjoying everything we went for a short run thursday about 5 miles loose and relaxed but looking at the time we were out it was at about 8m/m pace but felt like 9 1/2 was not breathing hard recovered very quickly

From prlman on Sat, Sep 04, 2010 at 21:33:30 from 24.2.64.196

then next morning went another 5 to loosen up at about the same pace with similar feel once it was my turn to run my sections did not want to go too hard (trying to set myself up for a good run in cedar city coming up later this month)running at what felt like just under 8m/m the timing and exchanges at this race were so bogged up hard to get very accurate speed and pace stats and of course no watch for me lol what felt like 8 turned out to be close to 7 m/m

From prlman on Sat, Sep 04, 2010 at 21:37:18 from 24.2.64.196

without too much effort so running at almost 10k pace with easy breathing could feel the work in my legs specially the last leg but over all easy to go fast and not get winded thinking i want to run something at sea level where i can let it all out ha ha maybe a 1/2 or full marathon just to get a really good read on it all

Go Crocs Go!!! I had only one run where my Crocs ate my sock. It never happened again and it was while my Crocs were still new so that might have something to do with it. You keep calling them your smurf shoes, did you get blue ones? Also, regarding your foot strike, to you strike heal first or forefoot?

Good job! That was a great course to run. You would have been just ahead of me the whole time. That last climb during the last mile was a bugger for me but the last few blocks were like heaven...perfect downhill slope and the finish line- I was close to being in there for a 1:29 but really bonked on the last 2 miles a little over 8 pace. I was so worried about killing myself because of St. George coming that I took some resting walks towards the end. I looked at my garmin at mile 12 and was 1:24 thinking , crap suck it up during the end and I could have been there too!

I will do this course again...loved it!

Good job Paul. Looks like you followed the race plan to the letter!!!! Hardware is nice, congratulations. I looked at the results and saw that you are now 45, I turned 45 on August 30th. Welcome to the new age group! You averaged 6:50 per mile, that's fast my friend. It's got to feel good getting faster as you get older. Once again, congratulations, looks like you had a terrific race.

runner # 7 after work forced taper and not being able to update much hopefully things will settle in again so i can have a bit of time to get things back into a somewhat schedule so here is the basics on the Vegas Ragnar first leg was 6 mi with an altitude gain of about 800 feet finished the leg in 45 min roughly timing was not a key role ha ha and yes i wore my crocs to run the first leg :) best guess 7.5 min mi not bad for up hill my second leg was almost identical to the first except it was through town on paved streets for the most part and late at night with similar time about 7 to 7.5 min mi figured i was doing well did not want to burn myself up with my big one coming up 3rd leg for me #31 10 miles grueling up hill 1300 feet altitude gain over 6 miles feeling like my legs had rocks in them but willed myself not to stop and at that point sleep deprivation not real good hydration fatigue from the first two legs and lack of fuel besides grabbing a bite here and there were all playing factors just figuring i would gut it out no matter how slow felt like i was crawling but still managed to pass quite a few finally reaching the summit starting the downhill my legs tried to buckle  but soon i was in downhill mode letting the grade work found a good stride and rythm and let it roll finishing in 1:15 so another 7.5 min mile which surprised me as tired as i legs like jello glad to be finished or so it seemed except one of the girls on our team was in bad shape she couldnt do her final 4.5 leg so with about 45 min recovery i was back out for more fun lol sucked up a little over 3 of hers averaged about 8 min mi not sure how lol and i was finished  with a feeling of acomplishment

Race: Halloween Half Marathon (13.1 Miles) 02:03:15
Total Distance
17.10

After another fun filled week driving and not being able to log or blog on here lol finally get a chance to try and catch up.

Saturday morning out the door at 5:30 costume in a bag on the way to the Halloween half get to the mall at 6 find Andrea and finally Anna we get on the bus and  up the canyon .

Milling around and getting dressed up (something between a smurf and an oompa loompa ha ha) the race is almost ready to start not planning on an all out race since I had promised myself to #1 run it in my CROCS (thanks Mike) and #2 making a pact with Andrea to help her set a new P.R.

This course is smoking fast next year think i will try to set a record for myself the first 4.5 or so are all fairly steep downhill and quick flattening out once we hit the highway for a few miles and onto the provo river trail to finish with another 3 or so of gradual down grade .

Running and pacing with Andrea keeping 9:30 to 10:00 pace somewhere (or so it felt ) was nice relaxing pace she did great had to walk a couple times with side stitch I pushed her a little past her comfort zone but in the end finished a minute ahead of her previous best very rewarding for me to be there and help her to accomplish her goal .

After the race and milling around a bit we got in line for the bus it was so long we decided to do a warm down and slow run back  to the mall another 3 miles surely we got back before the bus would have gotten us there ha ha

I'm going to race the Cold Turkey. It's a 6K from the Capitol, up into City Creek Canyon and finish in Memory grove. I've done this race about a half a dozen times, I really like it. The "medals" for top three are very nice, they are fairly big squares of etched glass, they're beautiful. I have coveted these metals for years and this year I feel pretty good about finally getting one! After this I don't have anything planned until the Winter Series.

Hey, you have some explaining to do. I looked up your time. Were you pacing someone or running for fun with someone? Did you lose a leg?

From prlman on Sun, Nov 28, 2010 at 19:38:17 from 24.2.64.196

ya you are right when i first signed up for this i was dead set to go out with a bang shooting for a pr somewhere in the 38 to 39 range and have been doing some speed work as prep then my girl friend decided she would run it with me if i would pace/run with her torn as i was i went with her on this which turned out just as well she set her new pr ,did the same a few weeks earlier at the haloween half pacing a good friend to her new best both feeling almost as rewarding as setting my own how did your race turn out ??

Come on, cut loose with some words here, it's no fun just looking at how many miles you run. I admire that you sacrificed a possible 10k PR to pace your girlfriend. That must be some strong love! I'm happy for you. You probably won't be able to run another 10K until mid February, the Winter Series.

set out on a partial temple loop run been a while since i ventured down 13th west between 104th and 126th south with all the construction makes for a muddy messy and somewhat more dangerous route not much shoulder in places and sidewalk torn up in others little better today with the work on hold for the holiday made for not too bad of a run after all

leaving the house not too early this morning seeing as i am on vacation ha ha not sure how far or what route to take turned it over to my subconscious weather not too bad so i start south on redwood to 126th then west to 27th west following where the road wants to lead me mind wandering loosely not really focused on anything, north on 27th to 104th  time slipping by with hardly a second thought east on 104th to 13th west still in my zone south to 126th then west again to redwood turning north back to 118th then warming down for a bit ,all in all nice to get out and turn my self loose

heading out the thermometer reads 30 but with the wind blowing guessing its around 0 should have worn my face mask but oh well hope its good for my complexion ha ha . Opted to go to the east side for my 13.5 route up 126th and loop over 114th and 7th east back to state and back was a bit chilly with the wind in my face starting out but soon enough started to generate some heat looked like the sun was going to make an appearance but didnt take the chill out of the air.   Did not really matter much i was in my own little world niether the weather or anything else was going to disrupt or take away from my relaxation ritual

I managed to get 9 in before it really got nasty I think it was 3 inches of mostly slush when I started by the time i dragged my soggy butt in i was soggy and plastered with snow shoes felt like they weighed a ton the effort level felt more like a 16 or 17 mile trek

wow what a day for a run starting out it was snowing lightly with about 3 inches of fresh snow not too cold but a blustery wind awirling thinking to myself it wont be too bad managed the first 1/4 mile and it became evident that it was more slush than snow and the storm was getting stronger. Figuring as I was already out and in it may as well keep going north to 126th and redwood turning west and making my way to 3600 west it was really getting thick out could hardly see in front of me and snow plastering  my body could have been mistaken for a snow man...well at that point i pretty much was ha ha. South from there to 134th finally turning back west now to complete my snow suit so to speak slush and snow caked on my body and shoes had reached maximum absorption long before felt like i was running with squishy bricks on my feet. East to redwood road turning back north with the wind small consolation but my spirit was still unwavering more of a playful run now splashing through slush and snow like a kid again good memories, cold not bothering me in the slightest .Back to 114th south and turn around and the final 3/4 of a mile back home before i know it :) blizzard setting in good ha ha laughing at the storm

of the many things I love about running is getting out in the "bad" weather. You hit the nail on the head with the childhood reference. It's wonderful!

decided on the treadmill today most decidedly not my favorite but something different, the flexibility to change pace and incline is nice but still a bit boring much rather be out on the roads but realize that mixing it up ultimately is better for all around fitness

took the boys to the fitness center to swim decided to run on the indoor track while they were in the pool its only 1/10th of a mile so was knew i would be getting some circles in ha ha started at a relaxed pace and soon was into my groove not really paying attention to speed just counting laps feeling really good concentrating on form and feel ( what my body was doing) sensing i was at a decent pace finishing my run down stairs checking the time was at about 1:40 for 13.5 mi surprising since i didnt feel the pace was at that level guess the short laps get decieving after a bit

So, 130 laps? I'm dizzy just thinking about it. Did it make one leg bigger than the other? 7:24 pace, that's cookin'.
