Personal:

Have been active my whole life, but turned my focus to running in 2006 after deciding to run a marathon.  I really enjoy the training aspect and staying healthy, but mileage has been on the decline over the past 3 years due to work commitments, so focus has turned away from races and more on just staying fit enough to still enjoy getting out.  Moved from Utah to Texas in October 2016 with my wife and 3 month old babe.

AM

This arctic blast has got to go.  -17 degrees today!!  I coward to the gym for a run on the treadmill.  Did a little progression so it kept things interesting.  At least it's better than not running. : )  Did a little extra after my run.

Run:

.25 to and from the gym.

6 miles in 44:30 on the treadmill at 1% incline.  Started at 8:00 pace and ended at 6:40 pace.  Avg. 7:25 per mile.

Strength:

30-push-ups, planks, side-planks, chair, running pose, bird-dog, and some kind of sideways leg extension thing.

PM

Wow, my second treadmill run of the day.  I had planned on running twice today, but last week thought I would be doing it outside.  Dare I say the treadmill was somewhat enjoyable today?

Run:

3 miles in 23:30, avg. 7:50 per mile.  Kept this one slow with no incline.

I was looking at your accomplishments, and wondered how did the WB Ultra compare to a marathon? I'm on an ultra team this year, and want a sense of what I'm in for...

This cold air is ridiculous. I can't wait to run outside when it's a little warmer.

I think it is a little of both.

Easier in the sense that you don't push the pace as hard because it's not gonna be over in 3 to 4 hours. Steady pacing helped quite a bit.

Harder because of the accumulated mental and physical fatigue. We had only one van, so we had to be driving the entire time. No van exchanges like your typical Ragnar can really wear you down. Be sure to get a big van with 3 benches so people can sleep while you're on the move. Obviously you'll be running pretty big mileage for each leg, so good pacing and good fuel will get you thru. I thought I was fully recovered after my first leg of 13.5 miles, but 9 miles into my second leg of 13.8 miles I crashed hard. My issue was not enough food and water after my first run, and then pushing too hard in the heat. Luckily I refueled properly after that and did awesome on my third leg. My best advice is to run a lot before the race. A solid base is what will get you thru without injury and feeling strong.

Overall it is an experience I will never forget and would love to do again if I had the opportunity. Plus the regular Ragnar now feels like a cake walk!

Hey Lily, Yes I'm over the deep freeze! I want a few more days of skiing before summer, but sub-zero ain't my cup o'tea

From Lily on Thu, Feb 03, 2011 at 11:01:54 from 67.199.181.73

sub-zero isn't even worth the run. Nu uh, I am not down with that.

I was just looking at your race times. Quite impressive. Nice work!
