Big Workout. Ran from work and did an extended Young Ward Loop. 2 mile warmup (6:50, 6:26), then did a 10-mile tempo at marathon pace. I figured I'd be a bit tired from last week, and indeed the first couple miles were a bit off, but I just took what my body would give me. After the first few miles, it actually started going really well, and I ended up with a nice overall workout.

Splits were 5:35, 5:31, 5:21, 5:15, 5:18, 5:24, 5:22, 5:19, 5:15, 5:14. Time for 10 miles was 53:38 (5:21/mile).

Cooled down for 4 miles at about 7:30/mile. 15.75 miles for the entire run.

Just curious why you chose the Monumental Marathon; looking at last year's times, it would appear that the field isn't all that quick?

cdViking - initially I wanted to run Chicago, but eventually decided not to because it would be very expensive and logistically difficult for me to do so. I dislike huge cities, and I don't know anyone in Chicago. Plus they don't really do anything for athletes of my caliber. Seemed like a pain in the butt with a high risk of warm weather.

Another blogger told me that Indy would be a good race, and that he was thinking of doing it (Jeff Mc), so I started looking at it. Course is pancake-flat and "Chicago-like". Much smaller race, so get the advantages of something low-key, but still big enough to be good. It's only the 3rd year of the race, so previous times don't mean much. Reputation for being well-organized already, and put on by the same people who do the Indy Mini, which I've ran twice and is stellar. Money is 10-deep with $2000 for first, and it's actually a winnable race for me. They offer a few accommodations for a runner of my caliber, and at least pretended to me happy to have me there. Most importantly, perhaps, November in Indianapolis has a very small chance of being hot, whereas October in Chicago has a very high probably of being hot. (REALLY glad I didn't run Chicago this year, would have been a waste for sure). To top it off, I'm from Indiana, my parents still live near Terre Haute, and my sister lives in Indianapolis, so I've got support there and know the town a little bit. It's a bit more "comfortable" for me.

Like I said, lots of reasons!

Jeff and I are planning on pacing together at 2:18:00 pace. Sean Sundwall from Seattle is also running and could be in the low- or sub-2:20 range.

Paul, I've really enjoyed your blog as you approach the Indy Marathon. When I begin my marathon build-up early next year I'm going to basically steal all your workouts. Adjusting for my much slower pace of course!

Thanks Rob, I'll need a little luck. I think the training has been good, but it's a lot of trial and error, and you right don't know if you're "right" until around Mile 18 or 20.
