South Jordan 5K, 6:00AM, Temp 70', some wind.

I felt good before the race.  My legs were ready to go.  After a 1/4 mile there was a 9 man pack that was slowly leaving my pace.  CJ Evans dad, I think his name is Kurt, has been training well and he stayed with me for about a half a mile before he dropped off my pace.  Kurt is in my age division and I've always been able to beat him but he was making me nervous.  After about 2 miles I finally caught one of the original 9 man pack but that was it for passing.

I've been doing a lot of easy miles and marathon pace miles training trying to get my mileage up and no real speedwork.  I wanted to go a bit faster but it didn't feel right.  I felt like I was straining to stay efficent in my stride.  I'm confident with some speed work I could get below 18 minutes and going at a faster pace would feel good.  I don't know if I'll find the time and effort to do that but it would be fun.

There was about 250-300 people at the race.  A pretty good turn out for South Jordan.

Next race may be Bryce Canyon half marathon with my good buddys Tom & Bob.

I ran 192 miles this month.  That may be the most I've ever run in a month.  I lost my records I was keeping from 1998-2002 when I was running some decent miles so I'm not sure.

Good race Terry. I'm sure with a bit of faster training you'll easily start pulling some near 17 min 5K races. I think Bryce will be sub 1:20 for sure.

Congratulations, Terry! Sounds like you had a great race.

What is your 5 K PR, on what kind of course, and when? What kind of course was this one? Any verification of the race distance? Hills? Any idea of your mile splits?

Regarding training - you might be ready for a 3 mile tempo at 6:10 pace once a week. Make it 6:15 if 6:10 feels fast. It should feel like you could race 10 miles at that pace. Shorter and faster intervals could give you a bit of an edge in a 5 K, but at the same time you may pick up the same or even bigger improvements through aerobic work. The advantage of the latter is that it carries to longer distances, and is less injury-prone. However, I do not think it would hurt you to do some 10x100 strides at about 5:30 pace a couple of times a week to practice efficiency.

South Jordan starts and finishes at the same place with one small hill. They didn't have mile markers and I don't have a GPS watch so I don't know what my mile pace was. But it felt like I stayed near the same pace the entire race.
