Easy. Cold. I asked Wetmore what my mileage should be over the winter and he said 75-80/week. He said that being as "youthful" as I am, there is no need to increase mileage too quickly. Over cross, my la.rgest mileage week was 73ish and I was wiped. I never felt like that mileage was too little (in fact I thought it was a bit much at times). I think there is too much emphasis placed on numbers (such as mileage). Some runners can rip it up on 85 a week, while others need 130 (McD does  130/week in singles (even 115 the week of nationals)). That being said, I plan on pushing myself hard. Whatever mileage that takes me to is where I will stay.

Mileage cannot be considered in isolation from other factors. 85 mi/week on mostly easy runs may be easier than 70mi/week high intensity training with tempos, intervals, etc. When you were in cross season, you were doing speedwork and pretty hard sessions, so 73 might have felt like too much. If you increase your miles sensibly, without increasing intensity at the same time, you should be able to handle 75-80 a week. Good luck this winter!

This summer I was wiped out in the 65-72 range, but this winter I have handled it better. Part of it may be getting used to it, and part of it may be the number and intensity of hard workouts, as Maria mentioned.

Two key elements to tolerating high mileage is proper nutrition and rest, particularly sleep. You must get your calories, and they need to be high quality. You must have a carb meal within 1 hour of each run. And you must get good sleep. I went from being wiped out at 60/week in 2003 to handling 120/week and feeling undertrained now by taking care of the above issues.
