Personal:

Started running in November 2007 to get fit. Now I'm back almost to square one after back surgery. I did it once and I'll do it again.

"In truth, runners don't race other runners. They race against themselves: to conquer their wills, to transcend their weaknesses, to beat back their nightmares. And while a runner can't actually beat himself, he can beat his time. Even years into running, he can get better."  Running for His Life by Michael Hall.

Evening TM run due to the rain; I haven't run inside in a few weeks and I had forgotten just how warm that place gets.  I was sweating like Arlen Specter at a Club for Growth meeting.  Did 1 hour @ goal marathon pace (8:15 per mi) and 1.5M easy cooldown.  Still have some stomach issues and the heat/stale air of the IAC didn't help.  One more long run this week and then I'll start tapering for Ogden which is 2 weeks from Saturday.  Yikes!

Funny joke about Arlen!

Keep up the great work...Ogden will be fun for you!

I hope so. Based on my training, race history, weight, etc. do you think shooting for 3:35 (8:12 avg per mi) @ Ogden is unrealistic? The race predictor on this site has me @ 3:31 based upon the flat 5k I ran earlier this month; 3:38 based on a flat 10k time trial I did last month; 3:45 based upon my last 10k race on a hilly course; and 4:16 based on Robie. I figured the last two were probably outliers. :-)

Very nice joke I like it a lot! When I heard about Arlen Specter on the radio yesterday I looked out the window for any pigs that might be flying by ;-).

I have found Sasha's predictors to be pretty right on for Utah races. Since Ogden is a pretty downhill course you will be faster than any hilly course you might have done. I bet if you go out with a 3:35 in mind you might just surprise yourself ... Good luck!

I agree with Bonnie that 3:35 could be within reach at Ogden. Run the first 8 miles controlled and easy to conserve energy on the downhill, run the next 6 miles with patience as you pace will slow a bit on the rolling hills. Hit the hill at 14M and take it at a reasonable pace but don't push too hard. At 18M once you cross the dam let it fly down the hill through mile 23. The just finish with what you have left after coming out of the canyon. This last 3M is really hard to be patient and it tends to get hot, but know that you are nearly done and your goal is hanging out there!
