Personal:

Started running in November 2007 to get fit. Now I'm back almost to square one after back surgery. I did it once and I'll do it again.

"In truth, runners don't race other runners. They race against themselves: to conquer their wills, to transcend their weaknesses, to beat back their nightmares. And while a runner can't actually beat himself, he can beat his time. Even years into running, he can get better."  Running for His Life by Michael Hall.

Got a call from my primary doc's nurse. They received the MRI results and referred me to a neurosurgeon, Dr. Thomas Manning. She said that the report found a "bulging" in the L3-L5. That sounds positive in that it's not a "herniation," but then again who knows what the surgeon will see and what sort of interpretation he'll come up with. She said I should receive a call from the neurosurgeon's office in the next couple of days to schedule a visit to review the MRI.

I hope it is a bulge, but that does not jive with all your leg pain. Its best if you get a copy of the CD and report. You can actually look at the MRI and determine how bad it is yourself. This video will help:

Once you have the CD you should go ahead and set-up appointments with orthopedic and neurosurgeon on your health plan (you can always cancel). It can take weeks to see some of these surgeons and that is more time/likelihood of permanent nerve damage.

Thanks for the advice Mark. Picked up the report and CD at lunch today. Haven't looked at the CD yet but the written report's conclusion says: "L3-4 intraforaminal disk extrusion causing severe foraminal stenosis." Didn't know what any of that meant so I googled foraminal stenosis and I can't say that I'm all that optimistic. :(

Disk extrusion sounds promising, but MRI will show the pressure on the nerve in the spinal canal.

My read: L4-L5 large left posterolateral inferiorly extruded disk herniation at this level causing compression of more than two thirds the cross-sectional area of the thecal sac and markedly displacing and compressing the left L5 and left S1 nerve root.

I hope its good news.

So I looked up the definition of disc extrusion and it turns out that its just another term for a herniated disc. A disc extrusion "occurs when the outer part of the spinal disc ruptures, allowing the inner, gelatinous part of the disc to squeeze out." At any event, I see my first surgeon tomorrow afternoon.
