I have always wanted to do this race and now I am not sure if I want to do it again, but tmie heals all wounds. I rode the bus up with Logan and we started to warm up and ran in the Josse, then into Clyde, Dave, and James Holt. so we all warmed up together. I should have hit a potty and didn't and it came back to bite me. No splits because they weren't good enough to share.

I felt fine the first couple of miles and then we started to drop down the canyon and my legs went to jello! I am not sure why I got so hammered, maybe my XC camp runs had something to do with it? I was tight and felt out of rhythm from then on. The downhill hammered and jarred me so bad that I had to use the potty twice, once at 5 miles and another time at 9 miles and I could never get going after that either. Once we hit Tropic and the rollers I was done and I still had 4-5 miles to go. I was lucky to hold on and run as good as I did.

I knew the course would be rough but it just pain brutalized me! I can't quite figure out what happened and why nothing seemed to click or work smoothly, but it didn't. I think the only highlight of this race for me was when we all finished and Clyde, Dave, Logan, and I attempted a two mile cool-down and I could tell they were just as beat up as I was!

I don't recall ever getting sore from a half marathon before, but I got sore form this one. I am as sore as I was last year after St. George in some areas of my body. I don't think my legs have ever felt so dead during any race as they did yesterday. I didn't hate the race, I just didn't run well and I literally got the crap knocked out of me yesterday. That course owned me!

I did treat myself to a double Bruger with cheese after the race with Logan, I felt I deserved it after a race like that!

James that's a solid time for your first trip to Bryce. That course is harder than it looks on paper. I'm totally trashed today (Sunday). Maybe just as bad as after STG last year too. Well have to see in a few days... but for now I'm hamburger.

From MarcieJ on Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 19:21:40

I feel trashed too! I agree with Clyde thats a solid time. With running you never know, you can be right on and feel great or not. Good job on hangin in there!

From josse on Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 19:26:02

Your describtion sounds like how I felt. I still think you did great. I have never been this sore from a half either. I have even done this one before and wasn't this sore. Kind a crazey, maybe in was in the water?!? It is kind of discouraging to be this sore though, isn't it? But I was glad to read that everyone else is beat up as well;)

From James on Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 19:29:20

Well, thanks for the encouragement guys. At least I know I have a lot of work to do for St. George. I am not too discouraged about yesterday because I didn't have high expectations and it was a new race in an area i love. Also, it seems like I always have at least one or two races a year where I might as well have not shown up, so maybe I got that out of the way.

From Walter on Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 19:34:15

Nice run J dog! Make your negatives into positives and chalk another half and move on. I would like to run SGM like you this year so keep up the good work.

From Lybi on Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 19:36:25

Bwah-hahaha! I'm so sorry you had a bad race, James, but you are just so darn funny I'm having a hard time feeling sorry for you. Sounds like you just had a bum race, and you're due for a really good one pretty soon.

BTW, nice time considering the potty breaks, isn't it? Seems pretty darn fast to me.

From Superfly on Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 19:41:47

James I only have about one race per year that I should show up at. It seems like those magical races are few and far between for most of us.

From josse on Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 19:44:54

I agree with Clyde. So does that mean if I already had mine this year I shouldn't even bother with the race thing anymore this year?

From Hayden on Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 19:52:46

Nice job at the race James. You had a great race and nice PR.

From James on Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 19:55:24

I say we should just bag it all and find a new activity that requires less time and doesn't get you as trashed. Paul Petersen has taken up Wii, although I got a little sore from playing that with him as well! I mean what good is a race that makes you so sore and you don't get squat!? Oh, wait everyone but me and Clyde got money so you shouldn't be boobing too much.

From James on Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 19:59:10

Hayden, you must have meant that comment for Dave's brother. No good races or PRs here. This is the blog to make comments about well placed potties, brutal courses, No money, a poor time, and very sore legs for running a freakin half marathon!

From James Holt on Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 21:37:55

Nice to meet you at the race. I'll chime in on the sore legs bit. I wont try to say anything encouraging or uplifting.

From dave holt on Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 22:48:51

Sore legs! I can't even walk today! Good seeing you again. Keep it up.
