Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Second night in a row of bad sleep.  Stress and anxiety.  Nice.

I met the SF group at 5am.  Ran with Ali, until she turned around at junk mail.  I then ran backwards to meet up with the rest of the group, ran with Dave, Bob, Steve, and Mark until the bottom of Harry's Hill.  Tempoed up it and this was the first part of the run where I felt the effects of my bad sleep last night. Sluggish but still marathon pace effort, .87 up in 6:49, or 7:49 pace.  Took a gu and drank out of Harry's hose.  Darin and Carl came up the hill behind me, but didn't stop much so they were ahead of me at the top.  I tempoed down, though the first .25 were slow going. Two miles of downhill, 6:09 reeling them in, 5:48 passing them and feeling frisky (if you are going to pass fast guys you gotta pass them strong, eh).  They let me pass, but then decide to go with me so they pull up toward the end of the mile.  I had placed a water bottle with a squeeze top at the bottom of the hill with then intent of picking it up and drinking at marathon pace.  I thus have another gu less than two miles to practice gu then squeeze bottle.  Grabbing the water bottle and carrying it for .2 miles was distracting, but I was able to drink about 6 oz before getting sick of the bottle and tossing it (don't worry I picked it up at the end).  Stomach did ok.  The pace suffered, probably a combination of a too-fast second downhill mile, the water, and going from downhill to flat.  Was able to drop the pace gradually and got a 6:38 mile.  All splits per garmin. 

After the tempo i kept all miles under 8 min pace.

I need to get more sleep!

Sleep makes such a huge difference! Hopefully you can relax and not stress and sleep better the next two weeks (much easier said then done!)

Yes, sleep makes a huge difference. Still, even if I got 12 hours of sleep a night for a week straight, i would not be able to come close to your pace. You did a great job today!! Just 2 short weeks until SG. Where are you staying while you are down there? We should try to figure out what the official plan is for the night before (spaghetti dinner) so that we can all meet up. I need to check the discussion forum. Have a good day Michelle. Try to get a nap at least!! :)

Okay, I did check the discussion forum and it sounds like everyone is doing their own thing with dinner and then meeting at the park(where the marathon ends) to eat or just mingle. They said to be there between 5:30-7:30. So are you going down alone? Driving and all?

I am driving down with Josse, but I am staying at a hotel for two of the three nights we will be down there, so we won't always be together. Besides I'm not sure she wants the same post race bad food I want ;)

Sorry to hear about the sleep problems. Taper madness can really screw with one's head. I know there is a whole group of people that study the physiology of "taper" there are so many physical and mental changes going on that your body just rebels. Often during a taper in addition to the spinning head and poor sleep I'll get calf cramps... In any case I hope that you find something to relax you into a better nights sleep (I'm all for a warm bath and a book)...

Thanks Adam. I so wanted to go to the library today but we last minute decided to buy some BYU tickets and we took our kids to the game. It was fun but exhausting. Now I am more tired than ever.

Look on the bright side of it. Hopefully you are so exhausted that your "sleepiness" will override the stress and you'll fall fast asleep as soon as your head touches down!

Ha ha. Okay,that's good. Not that you aren't a big girl or anything, I just didn't want you driving down all by yourself. I am thinking that we are going to be going to Marvs post marathon, and I am almost sure they have coke products!!! Then I plan on hitting baskin robbins for my favorite coconut ice cream, rocky mountain chocolate factory for some caramel apples and sea foam, McDonalds for some french fries, Starbucks for some caramel apple cider, and then Bear Paw the following morning for some oatmeal (smothered in all sorts of goodness), crepes and french toast. You are welcome to join me for all of the above ;).
