Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Humid again.  Easy miles.  I sang with my music quite a bit to make sure I didn't run too fast.

Bonnie is hosting me for the DesNews 10k!  She is so sweet to do that.  So I'll be driving up this afternoon and spending the evening with her and her husband, then waking up way early for the race tomorrow.  I am EXCITED/NERVOUS!

Good luck tommorrow and break a leg! (Wait, somehow that didn't come out right). How 'bout this-- You're awesome! We're all so proud of you! We hope you have a great day and a great run!!! If this doesn't do it for you, let me us know if you need a little reverse psychology to do the trick :)-- good luck!

I would try to sing when I biked but 1. I'm out of tune and would probably get all the dogs barking and 2. I'd probably swallow some bugs or something!

Have fun at the 10k. Man 10k seems so short now for me hehe like I'm just warming up.

From Clay on Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 12:41:48

Good luck tomorrow Michelle, I hope you do well:-)

Show them all what you are made of Michelle and not the sugar and spice part either. good luck tomorrow!

So STOKED for you! I am seriousley so excited for you to leave everyone in your dust! GOOD LUCK! (although your one person who does not need luck)

From Paul Petersen on Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 13:53:26

Good luck tomorrow. Actually I don't believe in luck in running, so rather I wish you "Good Execution of Training" tomorrow.

From MichelleL on Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 13:57:13

Thanks everyone for your comments! Actually Marcie, this is a very competitive race (as Paul knows). It depends on who shows up, but I might have to run the race of my life just to get 5th place. Its time to run with the big girls :)

Benn-a 10k is too short to run slow but too long for how fast you have to run! The perfect storm for long distance running.

Michelle, the lion queen, do doubt, without Gwen, you always give a great effort. (You didn't mention what song you were singing, ACDC?)

Brent-Didn't mention the band because there were more than one! Liz Phair, Sum 41, Nickelback, U2, INXS, Blink 182. I'll pass on ACDC. Yuck!

From Brent on Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 15:04:01

It is hard to be old school rock and roll, showing my age. Singing during boring bike rides with the shuffle works well to make the time pass.

Good luck Michelle, you've put in some seriously good training, I look forward to seeing your race report.
