Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Had to get home early, so ran on my own.  Had to keep a decent pace to get home on time.  Plan was 14-16, with 2-4 miles fast finish at the end.  I was thinking I would do 14 and 2 hard at the end.  Had a gu at 7.75, caught up to the SF running club at 9 miles, ran with Mark Shelley catching up with him, and then turned around when I saw SteveK and Carl, two fast dudes.  They offered to do the fast two miles with me, but there was one catch, we had to go up Harry's Hill first (a long one mile climb).  I haven't been up that hill for 1.5 years, but I was grateful for company so I went with them.  This also had the effect of giving me extra miles.  It also made our tempo downhill.  In two miles we dropped 366 feet.  Mile 1 was 5:47, mile 2 was 5:33.  I was behind the guys but caught up to them in the last 1/4 mile as I kicked it in (I am supposed to finish very strong, like 5k pace or faster).  That accounts for the 5:33 mile.  Now if only I could do that pace two miles in a row on the flat, hopefully later this year.   A steep downhill tempo = me becoming reacquainted with a long lost friend--the ice bath.  I squealed like you wouldn't believe, I got the bath down to 48F.  10 minutes in the ice bath.  I will do my core workout during morning conference, and am going into work today.

Sounds like a great workout! Nothing like a really fast downhill tempo to hammer the legs and reacquaint you with SPEED. That must have felt GREAT to cruise so fast though! And at the end of a long run! Nice.

Hey Nan, thanks! It is alot like getting reacquainted. During the last 1/4 mile, I got that feeling in my abdomen, when it is all tight and on fire, and in my head I was like, "Hey I recognize that feeling" even though I haven't felt that it a long while. The same familiar feeling from the good old days when I entered the ice bath. Hurts so good.

Hey great run girl! I just got caught up on your week and am SO proud of you running your speedwork in that snow storm! THAT TAKES GUTS! and courage, and toughness, and I LOVE that you did it! . . . . I want to be like you someday, I think I would have gone back home to bed, but I am getting stronger I think! I'm trying to not be persuaded to give up or give in, but to do what I set out to do.

anyway GREAT JOB! You are incredibly talented, and you make it sound so easy. wishing you luck with your last few weeks of tax season! ALMOST THERE!

Great run, Michelle! How did you know the temp of the water? I just fill my tub with cold water and sometimes I throw some ice in (or I sit in the river). Do you sit in there with a sweatshirt and hat? I recently tried the Pfitzinger suggestion of alternating hot&cold and loved it. I felt like I recovered even faster than the cold tub alone.
