Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Met with MacK and we did a longer run. I felt some breathing constriction at first but it went away. The pace felt faster than it was. I guess that is just a combination of not enough sleep and losing some fitness :(

It stinks to have broken through to a new level with my running with my Painter's Half just to have my fitness slowly deteriorate. I only have four more weeks so I need to stay strong and not lose my will.

One thing I have discussed with Josse is that I have never really taken time off this year, other than two days just before Christmas, and the Monday and Wednesday after St. George. I am considering not running (or cutting back miles severely) the week after the Provo half. My work will be really busy that week, so not running will help me get more sleep, and it might give my body some rest. So the questions are, do I need a rest from running, if so should I do it April 7-13, in a week when I will be working 50-60 hours, or should I perhaps wait and rest the following week, when I will also be able to take naps and slow down in general (we are taking a family vacation April 16-20). Perhaps I don't need a rest at all because I have had this period of reduced mileage.

My baby (ok he'll be four in the summer so he's not really a baby) was diagnosed with strep this morning (that makes two kids). I was wiped out from the run this morning, and I was sore, so I took a morning nap.  It was heavenly but then I woke up with a bad headache and I felt convinced I was coming down with strep.  I feel better now, but I just ate dinner and food has a funny way of making me feel good!  I may not run in the morning so I can get a little bit more sleep, though I am not sure that sleep is a good defense for strep.

In my opinion, if you feel worn out or like you need a small break from running, a short time off might be good. You would lose a little, but may come back energized and rested. But if you don't feel you need it, then press on.

I agree with Jon. I don't think it's smart to push through fatigue. If you are feeling tired then your body is sending you a message. You are working hard, and this is your busy season, and from what I remember from your short term goals I think your goals were only to do 35+ mileage. You might not be able to log the same consistent mileage you had in december and january, but you have nothing to be ashamed of. And i think that any fitness you "lose" will be quickly gained back. That's just my opinion. Best of luck, Michelle in this. I know how frustrating it can be to feel like you want to do more, but your body just won't let you! ;)

Run strong and smart :)

The amount of running you've achieved under your workload and amount of sleep is admirable. If it was me I would take a week out during your family vacation. Enjoy the holiday and recuperate both physically and mentally. Afterwards you'll be chomping at the bit to get running again and your fitness will come back very quickly.
