Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Well, I guess i have to write this up sometime.

This is my first race on my racing schedule.  I was thinking I'd like to break 38, since that's about where I was in my last marathon training cycle.  Sure, the 10k was hilly, I could see that from the elevation chart, but holy cow, it was hard.

I had my alarm set for 5:05 but woke up at 4:40 with no more ability to sleep.  So got to Ogden 70 min before the race.  Got my number then sat in the car and read a book.  I am reading Firefly Summer, it's about a small Irish town in the early 60's.  The weather was still fair, and pretty warm, about 44F with some wind.  I decided to change into shorts and my singlet, I did this after a 3 mile warm up.  I ran the course for 1.5 then turned around.  I realized the hills were big, but I was still sticking to my time plan. What is it with me and my inflexibility?  I thought that Sariah Long (who won the series 5k) and Stephanie Talley would be there.  I actually thought it was someone else who won the 5k, and their times were not impressive, so I thought I had a good shot at taking the race.  I found out after the race that the 5k is a beast and NET uphill, which explains their times.

Mile 1 - 6:08, Hard uphill then gradual downhill

Mile 2 - 5:37, steep downhill first half then slight downhill or flat second half

Mile 3 - 6:07, rolling, but more flat

Mile 4 - 6:37, rolling, just slight net uphill, in retrospect this is the beginning of the end, I should have been able to hold 6:15 on this one, was in first place, but Sariah challenged during an uphill here, I responded and she fell back

Mile 5 - 7:17, uphill, then steeper uphill, my legs are dead so I am pumping my arms, telling myself if I can hold off Sariah through the 5 mile mark, I could make it to the end, she didn't catch me in this mile

Mile 6 - 7:34 (that is just embarrassing) - steep hill at the beginning, then gradual uphill, Sariah catches me at about 5.3, I don't hang on like I should.  I had a hard time keeping strong and shifting gears at the top, net gain of about 100ft

.24 5:39 pace - some downhill to the finish, I didn't want to get passed at the bitter end.  I see the clock at 40:40something, not happy with that!

I introduce myself to Sariah, change my clothes, then find her again and ask her to show me the end of the 10 mile race.  She was nice enough to do that, even though it reduces her home town advantage a bit.   She beat me fair and square today, was stronger and smarter.  I felt a lot better when I learned she is (at least) a two time all american in the steeple chase and even got 12th place in OTQ race for steeple chase.  I feel a bit better.  But that doesn't change the clock.  She said you just can't go by time on these races, and I am inclined to agree.

The 10 mile race is apparently the 10k course with a 4 mile loop added to the end.  So I will be facing these same hills on March 12th.  I will be stronger and smarter!

I need to get serious about my diet, I know I will race better with just 2-5 pounds lighter.

That course is HARD Michelle, I still have nightmares about that course ;-) not really, but I feel your pain!

Good job!

I forgot to tell you, when I ran this race miles 5 and 6 were so funny. I was running with a bunch of people wearing garmins and I guess they had set their upper and low speeds (?) and so about half-way up the hills it sounded like an ICU with everyone machines going off! beep beeep beeep ... everywhere.

Michelle-

Sounds like you had a tough race. That indeed is a very hard course, so don't worry about your time. And Sariah is very fast, too (she beat me on the 10k a few years ago when I didn't bring my A game). And if anything, the uphills on mile 6-7 of the 10m are worse, though the mile 8-9 downhill is beautiful.

I have some advice for the 10m, if you want it. You may want to look at my Striders 10k and 10m from 2008. In the 10k, I went out too fast (5:31/5:13 splits) with the lead pack, while Chad went a bit slower. Then he caught all of us in mile 4 and ended up winning while the rest of us died on the uphill. I finished in 36:50 (5:56 pace).

At the 10 mile, I went out much, much slower (5:57, 5:32). When the uphill came, I felt strong yet wasn't killing myself and ran almost the same uphill times as the 10k. I ran smart at the start and then blew it open on the big downhill (5:02 mile 8). Final time was 59:53 (5:59 pace). The 10 mile was one of my best races that year.

So, I wouldn't worry too much about your 10k time/place. You know what to expect next time, which is huge with these courses. Run smart at the 10m and I bet you'll be much happier with your next result! Good luck!

Thank you Bonnie. I just stopped looking at my garmin--too depressing I have been reading others' striders 10k reports.

Jon-I was just reading your 2008 report--I will go read your 10 mile report. I think I will take it more conservatively. Thanks for the advice.

Sounds like a tough day at the office. Good job though.

How you can run competatively during tax season at all is amazing. But that course sounds sick. I'm sure you need power food and iron more than to you need to lose lbs. Also Soda, you know it cuts your O2 intake....Still econd ain't too shabby. Congrats on dominating a tough course.

Michelle, CONGRATZ!!! WOW!!! You are incredibly AWESOME!!! I just read your week! it would take me a whole week just to get over the jet lag! I am in awe of your greatness!!! Here's to getting your goal time at the 10mi race in March!

From Merri on Mon, Feb 21, 2011 at 17:36:14 from 160.7.252.148

An awesome time on a hard course! Good job at holding on at the end and good luck in march for the 10 miler!

That is a tough course - even worse if you hit it on an icy day. None of those initial 3 races for the WRS give you any kind of a break.

From runningafterbabies on Tue, Feb 22, 2011 at 16:43:30 from 24.10.211.135

I enjoyed your race report. I'm sorry the performance wasn't quite what you were expecting out of yourself, but I know that had everything to do with the course, and nothing to do with your determination or fitness. Go get that 10 miler!
