Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Woke up at 3:55am.  Had a hard time getting to sleep because of getting too much sleep on Sunday.  I just can't win!

I wanted to do a tempo run on the treadmill.  Was tired but felt ok starting.  Warmed up for 2 miles at 8:00 pace then started.  After the first mile at 6:22 needed to hit the toilet.  Then hopped back on the treadmill, warmed up for .25 then went down to 6:15 pace.  I felt like I had little juice so wimped out and turned the workout into mile repeats.  So rested .25 mile between mile 2 and mile 3, did mile 3 at 6:15 pace but had to hit the toilet again at .9 into the mile, just couldn't wait any longer.  I made reduced fat chocolate cookies and I think I ate 20 of them between Saturday and Sunday and they were coming back to get their revenge.  Hopped back on and warmed up for .25 then back to 6:15 for a mile.  At the end of this mile I was close to tears and wiped out and called it a day as far as the fast miles went.  I am disappointed I couldn't do more, but between the lack of sleep and the GI issues I couldn't pull out the workout I wanted to.

Mile 1 6:22, potty break plus .25 run rest (@ 8:00 pace)

Mile 2 6:15, .25 run rest (@ 8:00 pace)

.9 Mile, 6:15 pace, potty break plus .25 run rest (@ 8:00 pace)

Mile 4, 6:15, dead at the end

4.6 miles cool down, it took me 2 miles of rest after the last fast mile before I could go under 8:00 pace, it took four miles to feel comfortable at 7:30.

Asics.

I took Endurox R4 after.

Weigh in 121, no weight gain yet :)

Evening - ab workout.

Good workout, Michelle. Sometimes you have to modify workouts as you go along. Like you said though, important that you managed to slug through it. Keep this up and taxes or no taxes, you will have an excellent building block for OQT.

Sorry to hear about the restless sleep too!

Ok I don't feel so bad for my self after seeing you sleep total:) Great job on the workout!

From Lybi on Mon, Feb 04, 2008 at 11:14:20

Oh man! I hate it when I seriously need sleep and just can't seem to get it. The key with making naps not disrupt my night-time sleep is getting it early enough during the day. If I nap after 1:30 pm I will for sure have a hard time sleeping that night. I really feel for you putting in such a hard workout on so little sleep! Hope you feel better soon.

Good job on getting through a tough workout. It sounds like you had a lot going against you, and you still toughed it out-impressive!

You had a cold the day before. On top of that, who knows how the stomach issues affected your performance. Running on a treadmill dehydrated to start with does not produce good results. With that in mind, there was not much to expect.

If I were forced to use the treadmill for one reason or another, I would not do any speed on it. I think practicing bad form at a slow pace is better than practicing bad form at a fast pace.

Also, according to Tinman, it is not a good idea to run hard after a day off. His reasoning is that immediately after a day of full rest the nervous system is a bit stronger, but the muscles and cardiovascular system are a bit weaker. I tend to agree with him. I have in the past observed a pattern of poor performance in hard runs on Monday when I made them hard enough to push the limits of my fitness. And what is interesting, that during the warm-up I would always think I was about to have a great tempo, but it had consistently been about 5 seconds per mile slower than what I expected.

1. Yup I am... preparing a 1120s as I speak, well taking a break from the input actually.

2. I find the same trouble on Monday after a day off, feel strong but it never translates to a good hard workout.

3. Given the long hours for the next 10.5 weeks do you tend to run early, late, lunch or as time permits?

Don't know how you can get up so early. I am usually only up at that time to get a bottle or calm one kid down after a bad dream! Thanks for your comment!

I will be running early for the most part. I may have to only run short with my kids on MWF or skip those days altogether as time goes on. Happy tax accounting!

From Benn on Tue, Feb 05, 2008 at 08:32:55

The only thing I like about taxes is benig able to pay someone to do them for me and STILL getting a check for a couple hundred dollars :) gives me a couple hundred to spend to reboot this economy, not to mention buy some presents for people I love :) (and maybe take out a bit for a fall race entry)

From MichelleL on Tue, Feb 05, 2008 at 09:33:13

You should just be able to do them yourself, but if you are going to pay someone to do your taxes, you should be paying me to do them :)
