Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

AM:  Dang it I slept in (set alarm for pm instead of AM) so I did four miles on the treadmill @ 7:30 pace (I always do 1.5 elevation to equalize).  I should be able to get in some more this afternoon, but I am starting the week behind since I am trying to hit 85 miles this week.

weight 123

PM:  Ran in the drizzle, 42F, starting .5 mile away from Will's Pit Stop in Provo and going up the canyon four miles.  At the turnaround I noticed dual issues:  pain in my left quad and in my left very upper calf (just below knee).  The just below knee pain was sharp at time.  I stopped and rubbed it down, then stopped again to stretch my calf.  For miles 5 and 6 the pains were distracting and frustrating, but then they faded into the background.  So 8.03 miles in 7:47 ave pace.

Ab workout in the evening, and stretching.  I will also use foam roller on these trouble spots and try to work them out.  I have intervals planned for Wed but will skip/modify if the pain is still there tomorrow.  Often these pains are random and jump from one part of my body to another.  I hope that's the case with these too.  Last week I felt like I had a bone sticking out of one foot, but it didn't even hurt the next day.  Go figure.

I hate it when that happens! Wow 85 miles this week!! I am hoping for 30.

Have a good running week.

Really, I was just shooting for 20 miles :). Glad to know that you are human Michelle. Yet, you still amaze me because you got up and did what you did, way to go!!

I hate it when that happens, good job getting out anyway. You are a model of true dedication, keep it up!

Always the pits to miss a run or have to alter, but I think you'll be okay. I'm sure you'll hit your mileage this week. We should run together over the holidays sometime (Christmas, not Thanksgiving).

Thanks all for the kind comments. I did get out this afternoon, though the weather was yucky. Don't be impressed with an intent to run 85, only when I've posted the miles will I have earned them :) Who knows if my legs will cooperate.

Lion Queen, is 85 you winter week base running goal? Are you training for another marathon? It would be interesting to hear your take on 85 mile weeks with the mix of tempo and intervals during the winter months.

I peaked at 85 this summer, and I will peak at 90 if my body will bear it this winter. I am training for PF Chang marathon in mid January. So St. George was just a crazy distraction from the goal of OTQ on a flat course. I hope they come out with the new rules in Dec so we know what we are dealing with.

i think you'll get your mileage goal this week...yeah, the legs might feel it, but you were only 5 miles off that last week...glad you got your other run in. and let me know when/if the new OTQ rules come out. i know i'll forget to look.
