Short-Term Running Goals:

After 1/9/2010 - I am taking a year off from marathon length distances and focusing on building up my base speed on half marathons and shorter distances.

2010 Speed Goals:

  • Build up my base speed on training runs to 10 MM miles or better
  • Half Marathon - break 2:05 (9.5 MM avg)
  • 10K Goal 1 - break 1:00 (9.67 MM avg)
  • 10K Goal 2 - break 55 minutes (8.87 MM avg)
  • 5K Goal 1 - break 26.35 minutes
  • 5K Goal 2 - break 25 minutes

Long-Term Running Goals:

Long Term Goals:

  • Complete a 100 Mile race
  • Complete a 100 K race
  • Break 12 hours in a 50 mile race
  • Run all portions of the Wasatch 100 course
  • Break 5 hours in a marathon

Last run in one of my favorite pairs of running shoes this morning. I met Leslie and some of her friends at Birch Hollow for a before work run on the Pipeline Trail.  Leslie turned back to find her friends at about .75 miles and I was alone from then on.  At the turnaround took a gu and some water.  Started feeling soooooo hungry at 6 miles. Can't figure out why.  At 8 miles I totally bonked and started throwing in some walking breaks after that.  I think the 5 hours of sleep last night and the night before are impacting me because I usually need at least 7.5 hours each night.

Off to work.   Oh yeah - note to self - don't try to leave MillCreek Canyon between 8:30 and 9:15 on a day when there is scout camp.  Tons of cars sitting in the road waiting to park and drop off little scouts and  you can't go around them.

Yes - my Brooks water resistant shoes will join my pile for Shoe the Shoeless at Strider's. I will get a new pair before next winter because they are great for both trails and slushy roads.

It was a beautiful run (except for the bonk). I might try and do one early morning run each week and start a little later. Nature is so healing (except for when you face plant).

Allie - at what point do you recommend that I should look at racing flats for races?

cool. i didn't know strider's did that. now i know where to take my retirees. :)

about racing flats...i didn't start using them until last year. i wore mizuno wave revolvers in the desnews marathon. they were basically done after that one race!

i would recommend flats for shorter races (up to the half), but i don't really think they are necessary for a good marathon. i just have a fetish with light-weight shoes :)

you have put some good miles on your VFFs, so i would assume your feet are nice and tough and would handle the lack of cushioning in a racing flat. i guess it just all depends what you are most comfortable in come race day.

it looks like you have a nice race schedule planned out. the desnews 10K might be a good place to try out some flats. your feet will feel light and quick on the already fast course. enough that you may be able to break the 60 min. barrier. good luck with your training. and great marathon recovery, BTW.

Thanks, Allie. Good advice there. I was thinking of shorter races for the racing flats. Actually, I'm hoping that by the Des News I might actually try a 10K in the VFF's.

Les - about tomorrow - I think I might go do that dirt road we ran in the winter from Jeremy Ranch. I am in the mood for hills.

Not to spoil your fun - but you mentioned a possibility of a downhill run in MillCreek. How were you going to get to the 'put in' trailhead? The road is closed 1/2 mile past Burch Hollow.

I haven't talked to Harold yet about tomorrow, but I really want to put in a good long trail run. The Jeremy road sounds fabulous!!!! But, what I was going to tell you before you hopped in the bushes and I lost you forever was kind of what Gary and I did. Park one car at the top where the road is closed and then hike up to Elbow Fork and then run the whole Pipeline and down Rattlesnake Gulch and have a car there or down at Einsteins if you need more miles, the shoulder is not too bad from RAttlesnake Gulch and down.

Let me know what you decide and maybe if I am lucky I can tag along. Actually the Jeremy Ranch road sounds really nice.
