AM:  Easy out and back 10 miler up and down Provo Canyon with Mike, Spencer, Toni, and Reed. Brutally cold run this morning. Definitely the coldest run of the year.  Wind chill was about -10 degrees. We warmed up, but the windy sections were unforgettable.  We discussed the body changes that happen in the cold :)

PM:  Easy 7 miles on the treadmill.  I'm not a big fan of the treadmill, but it has proven useful for an occasional run lately.  And I went very easy.  One thing I've learned from Scott and Jake is that easy pace should definitely be easy.  Seems like a no-brainer, right?  Not necessarily.  In college I would rarely run easy pace slower than 6:30 mile pace.  That pace definitely felt easy, but looking back I wasn't recovering properly.  Now when I run easy, I go completely by feel.  Sometimes that's a decent clip, but often it's very easy.  This PM I ran 8:00 pace, and that felt plenty fast -- just what my legs needed.  Didn't feel like I expended much effort, but that's just the point.  It's just more miles in the bank that I can later withdraw from for racing.  Then I did hamstring and upper body weights.

The south wind in Salt Lake County was brutal. Nice job running slow!

Glad to hear you are on the "easy runs should be easy" bandwagon. The patience pays off. I've noticed my easy days are getting slower as I crank up the workouts a bit. A lot of mornings I average ~8 min pace.

Big week Matt! Plenty of big ones coming too. Nice work :).

Chad: Yeah, the wind this morning was impressive. So cold!

Jake: I'm totally on board. Thank you for teaching me this principle. I'm converted. I really feel it will help my running. Not sure why I always felt I had to keep my easy runs at 6:30 or below. Was probably just the "I always need to push, push" mentality. Not smart. I'm convinced I could have avoided more injuries and had better races. Well, future here we come!

Brandon: Thanks bro. Plenty of good ones in store for you as well. Get healthy!

Awesome miles my friend. Why can't we time these things so we are both putting in the long miles??

You keep healthy and this is going to be a monster year for you.

Good point Scott. Let's time it so we're in this together! :) Can't wait until you're ready. Thanks bro.

Nice double again and good job taking it easy. How was the canyon?

From Matt Poulsen on Thu, Dec 20, 2012 at 22:08:35 from 98.202.242.213

Thanks Melody. Great running yourself. The canyon was plowed up to Bridal Veil parking lot, so it was great until then, but immediately bad right when arriving at the parking lot.
