Personal:

Married to Elizabeth (she got me running in 2003). We have three boys, Lucas (12) , Sam (8) and Ollie (5).

Many years ago, I read that the AVERAGE male is capable of a 2:40 marathon.  I decided to test that theory.  I began running in 2003 with Top of Utah as my first marathon (4:24).  I need 3 more minutes.

My Little Experiment:
For the last few weeks I've been researching nitrate supplementation.  There are a handful of studies out about the benefits of nitrate (not nitrite) loading (300-450 mg) with many Olympic athletes trying it in London with the offer of increase performance .  Since I'm not thrilled about pill supplements, red beets offer some of the highest levels obtainable in vegetables--thus I began my search from some sort of pre-made juice full of red beets to "load" on before the St. George Marathon.

Odawalla makes a Carrot Beet Ginger drink with 1/1/4 Beets in a 12 oz. container--that's about 5 oz. of red beet juice with the carrots adding a small amount of nitrate.  So, that's x3 a day of 12 oz. Odawalla drink beginning next Sunday (6 days of nitrate loading).  This may be bogus, but at the very least the added vegetables are healthy!  Comments?
