Alright- I do not like the treadmill.  I should have gone out!  5 miles was TOO long and TOO hot and just plain YUCK!  So the moral of the story is to run outside no matter what and then just call it quits if it is not working and run on the treadmill.  I've got the treadmill if needed, and that is a very good thing!

I am icing my knee.  Last night it started to hurt, feel a bit weak actually.  It was fine on the treadmill this morning, but as soon as I got off it was there again.  The pain/strange feeling is hard to pinpoint. I am icing the upper outside and back of the knee right now.  I am wondering if my slippy slidy running yesterday maybe did something...or... the treadmill is evil and causes strange injuries.  I see Dr Brady in the morning and will ask him.

Have  a GREAT day!!!

5 miles on the treadmill is yucky, but you did it!!! Great job! I hope that knee is just a little problem that will go away soon, maybe you just tweaked it a bit. ICE ICE BABY!!

From Smooth on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 11:03:13

Sorry about he knee pain. Did you feel it yesterday in the slippy slidy run, more specifically after the run? Treadmill running effects different muscle use, though very subtly. Have you had this kinda knee pain before?

The first thing I always look at is my shoes. It looks to me all your shoes have over 400 miles. With your recent increase in mileage, it might have something to do with it too. Hopefully it's just a fluke and goes away with some RICE'ing.

I hope Dr. Brady has some good answers for you. Do lots of RICE today. Good luck.

From marion on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 11:42:13

It feels more like nondescript swelling and irritation. I am going to ice it for 20 minutes ever hour and take Advil today too. This knee has had unexplained swelling in the past after a non-painful "possible" injury. I am going to RICE today and go from there. Last year I ended up with an injured hamstring after runnig on the treadmill. I wonder if I do something weird on the treadmill that takes the stress from my calves and puts it on my hamstrings. The other thing is that when I run outside, I can make my pace whatever my body is calling for. The treadmill is very steady and prescribed. There isn't the natural pace fluctuation that comes with outdoor running.

YES- I need new shoes! I have not had a minute to get out and get a pair or two! Thursday or friday I am going to just have to do it. I have been putting it off until I get my orthotics back. We have been having a hard time getting them just right!

Oh gee I hope that knee settles down. It could be the treadmill. I despise running on the treadmill so I know how you feel! And, it definitely uses muscles differently because I can tell I am running differently on a treadmill than overground.

I hope your knee settles down, treadmils are yucky but I think when the alternative is to cold, to dark, or slippery they come in handy. I tend to use them more often then I should, I think in my case it's just convineince. sorry for the spelling

I hope the knee is not injured! The treadmill is a necessary evil sometimes... but YUCK is right! Let us know what the doc said!

From Kelli on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 19:27:13

I vote the treadmill is evil!

I hope you feel all better SOON!!!

From Jodi on Thu, Dec 18, 2008 at 21:55:07

Kelli - I second that vote. Treadmills ARE evil. They may keep you from the outside elements but that let you easily call it quits. Grrr

Marion - Hope your knee starts behaving itself. 5 miles is FANTASTIC!!

From marion on Thu, Dec 18, 2008 at 21:59:44

My knee turned out to be a passive aggressive behavior of my hamstring! I beat it into submission today ;)
