I woke up this morning with no soreness except right by my knee, top of my calf where Josse tried to see of I could jump straight up from a horizontal position ;)  I don't have any soreness from the massage at all :D  Now Josse, please don't take this as a challenge :)  It's the best I have felt after a massage, ever.  The scraping didn't seem to leave any lasting damage either ;)  I am going to bust out the ruler and scrape away!

My run today was not great.  I stretched and massaged my calves before I went and numerous times during the four miles.  When I ran, after about a half mile the cutting pain started right at the base of my calf again, so I walked.  I tried more running, after more stretching and massaging, but after a few strides- the cutting pain was back.  I don't want to be a wimp, if I should just run through the pain, but I really don't want a serious injury that will keep me from running in Hobble Creek.

I am planning on walking my miles until my calf resolves itself, or is this a bad idea.  Should I just swim or bike?  I ordered Mama Calm and hopefully it will be here soon :)

Any wisdom from the wise would be most appreciated.

Have a good day.  You know I never took Eeyore for a bully, but he is beating the crud out of my Tigger!

BTW- Sat, I could hardly walk, major limp and NO going down stairs.  Sunday and monday, no limp and going down stairs was ok.  Today- limping and stairs are not very good.

I don't have any wisdom to share, only sympathy!!! I will let the experts on the blog give advice. But oh, oh,oh, I am sending you all my positive energy, I think you are right to walk and bike and swim until it is feeling better, running thru the pain sounds dangerous to me,but I am not a pro. I wish you could join us tomorrow, but we will think of you on the trail and all send some group love your way!!!! TAke care of that nasty calf!!!!

I like to error on the side of caution when I feel pain because I had a knee injury a few years ago that stopped my first big attempt at running. It took me out for about a year and a half. The injury didn't last that long, but it took that long to get the habit and motivation back. Good luck!

Be careful about running through pain. It can lead to much more serious problems. If it doesn't hurt, hit the bike or elliptical trainer to maintain your fitness until you can run pain-free again. Hang in there!

Do elliptical if you can. If you cannot, next best thing is bike, and make sure to bike hard and for a long time. Walking is very ineffective unless you speed-walk (best speed walkers in the world can sustain 6:20 pace for 12 miles). My training partner back in 1994 went on a mission to Argentina. There he ate a lot of meat, walked lots every day, but did not run. When he came back, he was so fat I did not recognize him at first when I saw him. Prior to leaving he ran the Payson Onion Days 10 K in 35:57, which back then was a hilly loop course. When he first started running again, it was a struggle for him to run 3 miles at 8:00 pace. It took him a year before he could somewhat approach his pre-mission times. So all the walking he did for two years was probably only marginally better than sitting.

Thanks so much! for the great advice!Hey- the hilly loop old course is where I run everyday :) Ok- I will hit the bike hard (no elliptical) How many miles of biking for approx miles run? or can they be compared at all?

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Jul 15, 2008 at 17:41:32

For you, probably 12 minutes of hard biking = 1 running mile.
