I started running in May of 2006 while losing 85 lbs after my youngest was born.  I have 6 fantastic kids, 3 girls and 3 boys and a wonderful husband.  My oldest is in college and my baby is in pre-school. (Six kids in 5 schools ;)

Sasha wanted me to run a 10 mm to failure and then jog the rest of the miles.  I warmed up for the first mile.  It took about a quarter mile to get to 10.  I was surprised at this.  I kept trying to go faster and nothing.  I thought I'd have to settle for an 11 mm, but then I was at 10 after about .25 miles. The tempo was not bad until at 6.2 miles, my pace suddenly dropped.  I think I could have pushed for at least a 1/2 mile more, but I consciously chose to slow down and instantly my legs turned to molasses on a winter morning.  I sped up one more time and could not make myself stay there.  I am guessing this is failure.  Now that I am not afraid of the failure part, I am going to shoot for 6.  Anything over 6 will be cake!  I guess I will see next week.  So overall, I did I five mile tempo run inside an 8 miler.  Next week I am planning for 10 miles with a 6+ mile tempo.  You know, running faster at 10 mm was WAY easier than running those last two slow miles.  I guess that is why they call it failure!!  I have got to learn how to hold off the "failure" for as long as possible because I really hated the last two slow miles.  They were horrid! ;D

AWESOME tempo run. Yup, marathon pace is gonna feel very slow for you. I just cannot see "failure" in you. It doesn't belong in your vocabulary or fit your positive vivacious personality. Sasha needs to name it something else, may be like 10mm to jello legs? or 10mm to cookie dough?

We had a blast tonight. You're a great cook. I can seriously just live on your salad alone and the dream cookies are to run for. We are getting together for a group run, yeah?

One thing about those tempo runs is they are training your body to deal with the lactic acid buildup and things. You will find as you do them more, that you body will adjust more. (Easy to say - not fun to do).

Try to do those on a flat marked stretch. Borrow a wheel from us or Michelle, or Jamie, or buy your own, and measure out a flat course marking every quarter mile. There are 1320 feet in a quarter mile, 2640 in a half, and 5280 in the mile. GPS is not reliable enough for tempo runs. You never know if it is your speed that has changed, or if it is just the GPS error. The reason for flat - after a lot of practice of running hard you do not need to practice even effort because you already know it. So it does not matter if you run up, down, flat, or rolling - you can use your feel of effort to evaluate the grade of the hill, and if you know how fast you actually ran up that hill you'll get the grade measurement with quite a bit of accuracy. But if you are not used to running hard, you need to learn even steady effort, and monitoring your pace on a flat course that is well marked is essential. Also, the measurement of the failure is more accurate. It is defined as failing to break 2:30 over a quarter two or three times in a row in spite of your best effort. You will not stop your tempo run early because your GPS goes on a blitz for a minute or two and tells you you are running 10:45 when in reality you are still running 10:00.

Thanks Sasha. I have SO much to learn and really appreciate all of your help. I rely on the garmin so much because it is easy and I am able run anywhere the wind takes me ;)
