I started running in May of 2006 while losing 85 lbs after my youngest was born.  I have 6 fantastic kids, 3 girls and 3 boys and a wonderful husband.  My oldest is in college and my baby is in pre-school. (Six kids in 5 schools ;)

Monday is here!  I am beginning my official taper for the 1/2.  5 miles today, 4, 4, 3 and then Friday off.

I am not feeling very chatty today so I am off to do something.  Maybe I will take a nap.

2.5 on the treadmill (31:00) and 2.5 outside 26:31, 10:24 ave, laps-11:37, 10:05, 9:38ave/4:49(1/2 mile)

I did not take my garmin for my little 2.5 miler outside so I had to play with my little sports watch and figure it out.  It was a tough little run but not too bad.  I went to get on the treadmill for my last 2.5 and saw that the temp was 38 and could not resist going outside!  I am glad I did.  I needed a speedy little run for myself.

I am really thinking a lot about my goals, as usual.  I think I am pretty set on my running schedule for the year.  I am 89% comitted to Ogden 1/2, 100% to Hobble Creek 1/2 and the Provo Riverwoods 10 miler.  I will put in for St George and if that does not work out I will do TOU.  I am planning on racing Hobble Creek and Ogden.  My marathon will just be a run for the experience, unless I some how blossom into an amazing distance runner this summer ;D  My number one goal is to be able to run everyday of my life.  I am also going to race local 5k's and 10k's as they arise.  I am planning on being able to go all out for the Ogden Marathon 2010.  In 2010 I want to do a triathalon and the Wasatch Back.  Although, I really might consider the Wasatch Back if I am asked this year by my cousins.

Why is everyone feeling "nappy" today? Must be all that hard training. Have a great taper week. Since I'm training right thru Painter's. I won't be tapering too much.

You have to remember that this is my first 1/2 and I am a beginner runner. I am SO excited!!!

Have you always been a running machine? or are you new to this? I am very new and want to know if it is possible for a 39 year old to have some amazing success as I head into the 40's and beyond? I don't mean to suggest that 40 is old in anyway shape or form, I just spent my 20's and 30's totally inactive and VERY over weight and want to know if there is any chance for redemption :) Is that a silly question?

Marion - there are several people in Master's running history who took up running to get in shape and did great. You can do it!

You sound like you have it all planned out! I'm super excited for you. There's nothing like your first long distance races. And if your first marathon does anything, it makes you fall in love with half marathons! Enjoy your taper!!! Can't wait to hear all about the races in the months to come... Maybe I'll have to mail you some victory muffins!

YES, you are DOING it!!! NO, it's not a silly question. NO, I have never been and AM NOT a running machine. I was a book worm in high school and college. I spent my entire adult life being a mom. Working weekends graveyard shifts in the hospital, eating whatever was in sight for 20 years. I was 35 lbs overweight. I have never played any sports in my life. Yes I was VERY INACTIVE!

2004 was the year of awakening after my husband's heart surgeries. He's always been very active, fit and skinny. He bought a treadmill to rehabilitate his heart. I decided I needed to get healthy so I could take care of him. (At the time we thought he would become disabled). I joined WW in Oct 2004 and lost 30 lbs by the end of Jan 2005. I started running on that treadmill (which stood idle since my hubby was all better). I discovered that I really like running.

To make the long story short: here I was at age 49, started running and training for the 2005 St. George Marathon. The rest is history. I'm 53 and I hope to run as many marathons as my legs would let me.

Marion, have faith and confidence in yourself, you are working towards achieving your goals. You are doing awesome. You will have many many more success ahead of you. You are stronger than you think. You have already lost a lot of weight and running almost every day. I am SO EXCITED for your very first half marathon. You know you're going to PR, right? We are going to celebrate your victory big time!!! LOVE YOU!

Enjoy your taper this week. Yesterday I was dressed & ready to go, but I realized that I needed to change into shorts with pockets since I decided to run off base. I pulled on my red shorts & was about to change my shirt but looked in the mirror and laughed when I saw that I was wearing a white & PINK shirt with RED shorts...I thought of you and your half marathon and decided I'd keep my pink & red outfit on so I could be part of the fun! ;)

Smooth- I am in tears! Thank you! Your story is amazing and I am inspired. You are right, the very best thing about this weekend is that no matter what happens, it is going to be an amazing PR for me :) When I set the goal to run a 1/2, I pretty much did not believe myself. Now it is here and I am not worried about it at all. I am very excited!

You all are the BEST support and FRIENDS ever!! Thanks so much!! (my regular friends thing I am nuts ;)

Marion - I wish I could be there, but I have an important mission. I am going to go and hold Billy Bubbles and gossip with Sarah all Saturday while Sasha is off playing with you.

Wait a minute - why I am supposed to pay everyone $10. No way! Its bad enough I've been called a guy today.

My fitness story - I've always been relatively fit.

I started running in Jr High back when there weren't Girls Cross Country teams. I ran on the boys team and was last in every single race.

Later I switched to walking and bicycling. I mainly did endurance sports to keep me out of my house and help me cope with my mother's emotional and verbal abuse.

I continued walking over the years, and even took up hiking. I had knee surgery back in 1979 and was told I could never run or do martial arts or things like that. So, of course, I studied the martial arts for years.

After moving back to Utah in 1991, I started walking as a way to avoid depression, keep my kids motivated, avoid my mothers moods (never ends) and also deal with a husband that was never home and emotionally detached. I kept walking as much as I could - even causing a stress fracture in my left leg and through 2 ankle surgeries.

I had a neighbor that ran marathons and he started encouraging me to run with him. He was very patient about stopping and walking with me. He also was dealing with a struggling marriage.

In 2003 my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer. At that point in time I started realizing that I was foolish to not live my dreams. Two of my dreams were to run a marathon and to learn to play the banjo. I decided that I would walk a marathon and teach myself to play the banjo.

I started serious training in January 2004 and completed my first marathon in May 2004.

2004, 2005 and 2006 were my 'dark years'. 2005 I dealt with my mother's final battle with brain tumors and death, my husband and children gone all summer (husband travelling, Jenn in Montana, Kevin on Catalina Island). Our dog was dying and it was tearing me apart. I opened the mail one day to find my hubby had left the church without ever discussing it with me. Jenn got engaged (she kind of forgot to tell us she was interested in this guy) and that drove hubby over the brink. (Not that her engagement was bad - LOL).

2006 continued with the death of our dog, finding out that right after Jenn got married she would be moving to Italy, me leaving my husband, son totalling car, moving 3 times that year, daughter getting married, daughter leaving country.

As I learned to overcome the years of emotional abuse I had been under I did put on some weight. In July 2007 I started with a personal trainer and lost 30 pounds and started becoming a runner. Now - I am seeing where I can go from here. I have learned I have value in life and that I am a nice person. My kids are great and I still have a relationship with my ex.

There's more to the story - but that is enough excitement for now.

The $10 comes from you saying you'd pay me $10 if I could get Sasha to do it- i just extrapolated it to include all men :) Ok- I'll take that part off :p

WOW- your story is... WOW!!! Exercise really does make a great big difference with all the the emotions of life. You are a ROCK star!!!

Have fun with Sarah and baby Willie. We are going to miss you!!!! Are you going to do all of those races in provo? (the 5 & 10k's?) I am thinking about it. I like the bigger races, though, so I stick out less :)
