My first post-high school 5K, in which I thought I was going to die

The first time I won my age division.  Yippee!

My first half marathon, in which I attack Sasha

The time I beat my high school PR for the 5K (as a 31 year-old mommy of 3!)

My first 5K barefooted

Short-Term Running Goals:

I'm just getting back into running after a long break to have my last child.  I would like to race some 10Ks, a half, and a marathon in the next 2 years.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Be the oldest woman to complete a marathon.  Yea!  But hopefully I will also complete some BEFORE I geezer up, like, before I'm 40 for sure.  I think it would be fun to dress up really strange for marathons, like impersonating celebrities and stuff.  Except I don't really like celebrities, as a rule, so maybe I'll have to stick to the age old question of ninja, or pirate.  I say ninja. *Hyah!*

Personal:

I am happily married to James W (Cool Runnings). We have 3 boys and 1 opinionated little girl.  I love reading and I'm also a news junkie.  I am a stinker.

Napping is bliss! I am amazed at all the great races everyone ran yesterday. Everyone on the blog is either making huge progress or suffering with an injury. Very dedicated, either way.

Wish we could find some magic cure for all running injuries. That's kind of why I started running barefoot. I'll be a test rabbit...if I am able to get over 40 miles per week without injury, I'll have to attribute at least some of it to my barefoot running miles.

Did you really nap for 19 hours? That must be a new PR!

From Jody on Mon, Mar 17, 2008 at 18:19:31

Let me know if it is the cure - by the time you are done testing it will be warm enough up here to try it out.

Ha ha. 19 hours of sleep? That is awesome :)

I heard all about your barefoot running from your mom. I have this strange obsession with not letting the bottoms of my feet get black, ha ha. Actually I was wondering how your arches are handling it? If I wear sandals too often my arches and calves hurt. My over-pronating is kind of extreme though. Anyway, I will be curious to see how it turns out :)

Usually when I run barefoot, I actually wear black socks. This is useful in 2 ways. First, people tend not to stop and stare at you as much because it looks kinda like I have shoes on. Second, my feet don't turn black. I am the same way.

In terms of my arches, I don't feel pain at all. You really change the way you run when you barefoot. NO heel striking! Otherwise it hurts. So a lot of the weight is more on the forefoot. I think it actually helps strengthen the muscles that support the arch.....duh... honestly I don't know if that is true, but it would be nice if it were. I hope it is.

Cal--I only had a half hour nap. The computer is setting me up to look like a dork. How dare it!

thanks for checking in on me! this blog is so friendly its great! anyway, I think we do have a pretty close pace, my best 5K is around 24 too.

I haven't heard too much about the barefoot running, I'm really curious to see how it works for you. do you have a problem with little pebbles in the road? did you do anything special to toughen your feet? this barefoot thing really has my mind going

From Lybi on Wed, Mar 19, 2008 at 15:19:49

Carrie - I just barely started trying barefoot running. I avoid stepping on pebbles 'cause it hurts! You really have to look at the ground. None of this "lalalala lookin' at the birds..." I didn't do anything special to toughen up my feet. You just have to try it--but on a nice clean sidewalk, or even on nice grass first.

From kristina on Wed, Mar 19, 2008 at 22:25:27

Yes, that is one reason why I don't think I'll be trying barefoot running anytime soon. Do you remember how many stickers there are in NM? I'm always picking them out of my shoes after my runs and I run on a paved road! Ha ha, maybe you don't want to move here after all. I'm just kidding, you definitely still want to move here ;)
