1 mile:  6:31

5K:  23:37

Half Marathon: 2:04

My first post-high school 5K, in which I thought I was going to die

The first time I won my age division.  Yippee!

My first half marathon, in which I attack Sasha

The time I beat my high school PR for the 5K (as a 31 year-old mommy of 3!)

My first 5K barefooted

Short-Term Running Goals:

I'm just getting back into running after a long break to have my last child.  I would like to race some 10Ks, a half, and a marathon in the next 2 years.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Be the oldest woman to complete a marathon.  Yea!  But hopefully I will also complete some BEFORE I geezer up, like, before I'm 40 for sure.  I think it would be fun to dress up really strange for marathons, like impersonating celebrities and stuff.  Except I don't really like celebrities, as a rule, so maybe I'll have to stick to the age old question of ninja, or pirate.  I say ninja. *Hyah!*

Personal:

I am happily married to James W (Cool Runnings). We have 3 boys and 1 opinionated little girl.  I love reading and I'm also a news junkie.  I am a stinker.

So let me explain about my dog...  I really wanted to put up a picture of my new dog, Sparky.   So, in one of those notorious attempts at being funny, I tried to make him look like the picture of Paul Peterson's dog, Gil (who could probably eat Sparky for breakfast).   Paul changed his picture recently, and now I think it's a penguin making spaghetti or something like that...I don't know.   However, I'll just take the 5th as to how the underwear ended up on the poor dog's head.  I WILL say, dear reader, that this picture is definitely on the outer limits of exactly how far I am willing to go to amuse you, so please do not expect anything else in this particular vein of craziness.  I kind of hoped Paul would get a kick out of it, too, but you must remember that the poor man runs about 100 miles a day (or something like that) and cannot be expected to read the blog of every pee-on who emulates his dog's headwear.

And speaking of peeing-on, I took Sparky on a run for the first time today.   He is not used to the leash yet, and suffers from acute I-Must-Stop-and-Sniff-Every-Bush Syndrome.  So half of the run he was dragging me to the nearest bush, and the other half I was trying to drag him away from the last bush we passed.  Well, I guess it must have been less than half, because a large portion of this run Sparky was zig-zagging wildly in front of me in an apparent attempt to get me to trip on him.   Once or twice he stopped right in front of me without warning--I had to hop over him.  I suppose if he were taller he would be a perfect training tool for a hurdler.  But being a dachshund (wiener-dog), he is really more of a speed bump than hurdle.   If ever my neighbors thought I was comical to watch before, they probably were on the floor today.   I laughed out loud myself more than once.  I had the leash wrapped around my right wrist, so of course Sparky figured out that if he went behind me and then sprinted past me on the left side, he could almost knock me down, despite his puniness.  What a great run.  I have high hopes that Sparky will become a great little training partner with more practice. I ran 1.4 with  Sparky, then another 1.3 or so alone.  With Sparky my ave. pace was 11:47, without him it was a more typical 10:07.

what a dog! well, it sounds like runs w/ sparky won't be boring! hehe i've said it before & i'll say it again -- you're hilarious. -and good job hanging in there w/ the little guy for 1.4!

That's so funny about the headwear. I thought it was another testament to how crazy little boys can be; I never DREAMED their mother was just as silly! lol

Good job, Sparky! Keep Lybi running slow so I can catch up to her pace!! (doggy snacks forthcoming in the mail, partner!)

Why didn't Christine run with you?

From Paul Petersen on Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 12:47:57

Has Gil started a new fashion trend?? Gil is afraid of small dogs, by the way, so he probably won't eat him. But he would like to.

From Lybi on Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 12:48:16

Sparky would've eaten her. No, actually, Christine can only go on Tues. Thurs. Fri. and possibly Sat. because she has other things she has to do early on Mon. and Wed.

From Lybi on Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 13:53:42

I was talking about Christine in that last post.

Paul, Sparky would probably bark like crazy at Gil and then wet himself, based on past observation. Meanwhile you two would pass us like we were standing still (which would be likely if there was a bush in the vicinity) so the awkward moment would pass quickly. But yes, Gil is quite an icon.

From Jon on Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 14:45:00

I don't think Gil could pass Sparky unless Sparky was walking backwards... Paul would agree, too, since he describes Gil as a "lazy sack of flesh". Though Dave Nelson's sprained ankle is proof that Gil is harder to jump over.

Lybi, you're having way too much fun on your runs! Way to go, even with the dog pulling you in all directions :). How come I can't ever think of something to make my runs so entertaining? I don't have a dog though...

From Paul Petersen on Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 15:15:58

Gil can sprint well, but is only good for 1.5 miles before he hits the wall.

From Dave Holt on Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 15:40:22

I used to run with my dog also. Then one day she laid down and wouldn't move - not even to go back home. I had to carry her! So she hasn't gone out since.

From Lybi on Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 15:45:28

Holt--Oh nooooo! Can't say I blame her too much, though, with the workouts you put in. Hope she isn't a big heavy dog, and I ESPECIALLY hope she isn't prone to accidents when she gets picked up, like Sparky.

From Michelle on Mon, Sep 10, 2007 at 20:38:21

Lybi,

you crack me up! How do you these die hard runners that eat, drink and sleep running to discuss dogs with underwear on the their heads and all the other crazy things that come up!!! It's great!!! Keep up the comedy relief!!!
