Thank God! After being up and down all night with Bubbles, I ran 18 and it went ok. Today's run was about determination. I was determined to run the entire run, even though I was tired and ran into a few problems. It was a bit cooler today than my 17 mile run last week, but still very hot and very humid. I started earlier for one thing. This caused my camelpak to stay frozen longer so I ran out of available water at mile 7 (I still had a frozen brick in the pack). Thank God for the golf course and our local running store. I refilled my pack twice during the run. Even if it had melted properly, I would have run out of water.

When I started running at 5am it didn't look like I was going to even make it a mile. Like I said, this run was about determination. I started running down my street and could feel that my lower back was very tight and hurt. It felt like it was about to go into spasm. My socks that I wear all the time were sliding off my heels (I have very small feet and the socks usually hang out the backs of my shoes, they are so big). They just didn't feel right. I took the time to try to reposition them and took that opportunity to stretch my back. It began to feel better after about 2 miles but hurt the entire run. At the end, it really seemed on the verge of a spasm. I ran very, very carefully the last few miles. The last few miles were strong, but the last miles those stupid socks were wrinkling at my heel. After so many miles I could hardly bend over to fix them. I am going to have to go back to the other socks I wore before, as these are not working right now.

I did 18! Now I have a recovery week and a long run of 20 the next week. Hopefully, it will continue to cool down. I am pleased that I hit over 40 miles again this week (Monday to Sunday so the blog calendar won't show the total).

Holy Cow Lulu! I am so impressed with your determination. What a difficult run...but you made it! Hope you feel better next week. Maybe a trip to the chiropractor is in order? It's so much better to prevent little pains from becoming injuries. Are you running St. George this year?

From Lulu on Mon, Aug 20, 2007 at 11:19:35

Lybi, Thanks. My chiro is one of the people who keeps me running. I will see him today, hopefully. I had to put off the appointment I had this morning as I still have work crews in the house. Because of the recent theft, they cannot be left alone. If I can get into his office this afternoon, I will. He uses the ProAdjuster so he doesn't manually manipulate people. It is all done by computer!

I am training for Chicago Marathon which I believe is the day after the St. George Marathon. It is October 7th. The goal of this marathon was to whip my body back into shape post-pregnancy. I don't even have a time goal yet.

By the way, Lybi, how is your little man? Is his arm better?

From Lybi on Mon, Aug 20, 2007 at 11:36:48

Wow, I want to be adjusted by a computer too!

Geez, a theft too. I'm so sorry--very stressful. Good thing you are so good at taking care of your health.

My little 2 year-old's arm is healing quickly--only 2 more weeks in the cast. Yea! (He mostly uses it as a weapon at this point. He clonks his brothers on the head with it if they don't give him what he wants--so it's hard to feel too bad for him.)

I've been wanting to write you all weekend and tell you how ...I don't know the words exactly...I was touched by your idea of leaving pain at mile markers. We've had some deeply painful things happening in my family...not mine and Sasha's but other family members....that I've kind of been obessing over trying to figure out how to mourn for them and be helpful but I don't know it's so hard...Maybe I'll give them the idea of leaving pain behind them on a bike ride since they aren't runners and wouldn't be able to cover the distance. I did pray for you and your family. Thank goodness Bubbles wasn't home when those men were there working..I guess that's one blessing in all of this...Congrats on a great long run. BTW...how old is Bubbles...you are amazing for running so much with I'm assuming a baby...

Sarah, the memorial run is something that really worked for me. Perhaps if they are not runners, a walk in a botanical garden or some special place like that would be right for them. For me, running is very cathartic so it made sense for me to run the marathon as a memorial.

Bubbles is now eight months old. Like I said previously, my husband is very supportive of all my running, and lovingly makes lots of time available for me to do it. We have always been mutual supporters of each other's interests and dreams. I feel truly blessed to have a wonderful, good-natured child and an amazing man whom I think is the best Dad in the world for her.

I have an opinion on the two-a-days that you asked Sasha about. Given the mileage you will be running (44-46 miles/week max) I would not think double runs are required and may even detract from your running. For the most part, you want to do 2-a-days only when you can't fit any more miles into your 1-a-days. Given that 46 miles works out to less than 8 miles/day (6 days/week), I don't think you want to break it up. For a marathon, an 8 mile run is better training than 2 4-milers. Your body needs to practice running longer distances. The only time I would suggest two-a-days for you would be on an easy, recovery day, but probably not even then. I usually get up to 70-80 miles/week before I do doubles. Take a look at this:

Thanks Jon, I was asking in consideration of increasing mileage. You and Sasha certainly have given me something to think about. I'll look over the web site. When it comes to running, nutrition, or sports medicine, I am information junkie.
