Their were a lot of positives for this race. There was no snow or no rain. I had a big "positive" split, I won $50 for taking 3rd overall and finally my legs didn't hurt to bad afterwards. Let me explain. I got up and went to get my packet. I did a nice 3 mile warmup and then hopped on the bus to go too the starting line. I then did another 2 miles with Clyde, Andy, Jon, and Cody. The weather was a little cold and slightly windy. I saw Teren Jamesen at the starting line and decided how long I could stick with him. I was hoping the wind didn't pick up. I was wanting to hit 5:10 miles for the first little bit and then see what would happen. Here are my splits for the race:
- 5:11
- 5:11
- 5:05
- 5:08
- 5:08
- 5:10
- 5:21
- 5:35
- 5:40
- 5:42
- 5:54
- 6:07
- 5:55
.1- 5:39
As you can see, the wind picked up tremendously around mile 6.5. I stuck with Teren for that long and was feeling fine until I took a right turn smack dap into the wind. It was much worser wind than at the Trials last year plus the temperature was really cold. Teren started to extend his lead and I let him go. I tried to stay relaxed but my legs got a little tight. At about mile 10, Alexander Tomas came up and passed me. He pushed the pace and my body didn't respond that well. I tried to keep everything going but the wind was a killer. I ended up taking 3rd overall and averaged 5:27/mile overall. I didn't get my PR but I figured it wouldn't happen with all of this wind. I got my warm clothes on again and did a 2 mile cooldown with everyone. I was a little disappointed that Tomas caught up to me and placed 2nd but I learned a lot from this race. It is hard to race well with the wind conditions like they were. Teren came in at about 1:10 something so it slowed everyone down. Hopefully I can learn from this and get ready to do well at Ogden. Remember, positive splits are bad and negative splits are good! |
