I have never actually blogged on this website, but Sasha is encouraging me to give it a try.  So here goes...today was my first half-marathon ever, infact I have never ran over 10 miles and never raced over a 10K.  It ended up turning out great, kind of surprising to me...I thought I would die at mile 10.  I should also preface this with my training mileage, it is 40 miles/week, 90% of that done on a treadmill...did I mention I have 3 kids?

Anyways, left my house at 5 am, caught my bus at 5:30.  The race started 30 minutes late, which since I was one of the first busses up meant I stood up at the top for 1 1/2 hours.  But none the less, the race did start and off I went.

First mile: 5:20...not as fast as I thought I would be but it felt easy

Mile 2: 5:20 again...still not as fast as I wanted, but I was almost waiting for another female to come up and pace with me.  No one did, so I decided that I just should go for it and that I did.

Mile 3-6: Don't know my exact splits, I knew them in the race and knew that I had picked it up, but can't remember them now.

10K: 33:58...I remember thinking "I still have 7 miles, oh crap, what if I can't keep this up?"

Miles 6-10: No exact splits, but alot of 5:40's

Mile 11: no split but my time on my watch was dead on 1 hour...I was super excited because I hadn't died yet and knew I could get really close to 1:12...kept pushing

Mile 12: still pushing but calves are feeling tight, trying to stride out as best as possible...see the sign that says "you have one mile left" and my watch said 1:07:15...so then I must have ran a 5:58 last mile.  It was fun to hear my husband and kids yelling along with my parents...I could see the clock at this point and happy to be finishing in the 1:12's.  Chip time: 1:12:13

Not the best race report I know...I should have saved my splits on my watch or something.  I do know that I am happy with my performance today and thrilled that it wasn't near as bad as I was sure it would be.

welcome to the blog. great time and huge congrats on the win. a time like that for your first half marathon...wow. i know how fast you are at the shorter stuff, but there is obviously lots more to come with the longer distances as well. great work!

From Burt on Sat, Aug 22, 2009 at 19:48:35 from 98.167.151.26

Wow! Great time and I'm glad you didn't die also at the 10 mile mark.

From Sasha Pachev on Sat, Aug 22, 2009 at 21:33:37 from 192.168.1.1

Brent - this should be more like 20,000 commando points. She almost chicked the field finishing 3rd among men. It took Mike Vick and Danny Moody (I am pretty sure that is who the second guy was) to save the dignity of men.

Also, this is only 34 seconds slower than Olga Appel's course record, which in all honesty should be retired because it was done on a different course, which was faster.

Holy cow- 1:12 half marathon off of 40 mile weeks and long run of 10 miles? Unbelievable! Nice job, Lindsey. What are your long term plans?

From Mark on Sat, Aug 22, 2009 at 23:19:54 from 173.168.88.68

Awesome race! As I read the race report including your training mileage and racing experience I was amazed, how could this be? You are quite an amazing runner. Great job!

From Lindsey Dunkley on Sat, Aug 22, 2009 at 23:45:31 from 68.166.245.178

Thanks...

Jon-no definite long term plans, I just love to run and have a determination to do it, even off of very little training. I really love the 5K road race, but we will see if I keep up this 1/2 marathon thing...maybe a couple or so a year. Some think I should train for the marathon...not convinced yet :)

Mark-the low mileage is a result of at BYU, I was always injured over 40, so my Coach just trained me at 40...so I have learned to train really smart and hard for those 40 miles. The treadmill training is due to husband's crazy work schedule, he is firefighter (a Captain), and a respiratory therapist so his hours start early and are long.

Thanks again!! :)

Impressive debut at the HM distance, that time is awesome. Just wait til your training increases, you will truly bust out some incredible times.

Lindsay I was so excited to see you at the start. I have always wondered what your longer race times would be. You have always been my inspiration since I have three kids and have to do lots of treadmill running as well. It was good to talk to you about running and pregnancy it is good to know there is hope if I have to stop again. Great Race!

From MichelleL on Sun, Aug 23, 2009 at 18:40:19 from 71.219.40.89

Great job Lindsey! I agree with Sasha on the commando points. I would be interested to see if you can qualify for the olympic trials on 40 miles. There's no doubt you have the talent. It's too bad there's no 1/2 marathon in the olympics. You might want to consider training for the Houston 1/2 marathon championships, which is in Houston in January. I'd say you have to add 3 minutes for a flat equivalent, but that would still place you 20th with today's performance. With a longer-distance focus and competition (even if you keep at 40mpw) you could probably shave off the time to win money (top 10) there.

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Aug 24, 2009 at 18:07:37 from 64.81.245.109

Michelle:

She definitely can. 1:15 half is a qualifier. However running the full marathon off 40 miles a week would be a bad idea.

From MichelleL on Mon, Aug 24, 2009 at 19:13:16 from 71.219.40.89

Oh, yeah, I forgot about the half marathon qualifying time. Lindsey, do you have a coach? Are you working with coach Shane?

From Merri on Tue, Aug 25, 2009 at 10:25:35 from 67.199.179.247

Nice job Lindsey! It was nice to meet you after the race!

From Lindsey Dunkley on Tue, Aug 25, 2009 at 18:04:35 from 68.166.245.178

So again thanks to everyone and the welcoming to the blog...what a community of nice people.

Michelle-no coach, just myself...although most all my workouts are from Coach Shane from the BYU years, now they are just a little slower with faster recovery :)
