What a difference a year makes.  364 days ago, I ran this race in 11 degree weather.  Today it was 55.

After a wild birthday yesterday, and three overnight interruptions from Jack, I awoke feeling anything but refreshed.  Entertaining thoughts of bagging this "fun" run, I solemnly prepared my oatmeal.  After finishing, my running ancestors whispered, "Eat more food" so I had a chaser of Cocoa Puffs.  The start is 1.5 miles from my house, so I set out 20 minutes early to get in a bit of a warmup, and have time to visit the bathroom.  Nothing felt right in the warmup; I stopped and walked thrice.

I found my mom and sister at the start.  We visited while the bureaucrats sorted out the same day registrants.  15 minutes late, the race began.

2 miles down, followed by 2 miles of rollers, then 2 miles up with a nice little downhill finish, complete with twists and turns.  I felt good for the first 2 miles.  A highlight: while drafting on a guy with headphones, he turned and blew a snot rocket on me.  Miles 3-4 include 6-8 turns through neighborhoods.  I must have run some fantastic tangents, as I measured the course at 6.15.  (6.17 last year)

Just like last year, I was feeling like taking a break around mile 5.  Somehow, I soldiered on.  I ran from semaphore to semaphore, convincing myself not to walk.  I didn't have a mantra, but Radiohead's "15 Step" came at a good time...the cadence is perfect.  I'd run myself into no-man's land around mile 3, and I didn't want to see any of those runners again, especially snot rocket-man.  In the last mile, the course rejoins the 12-15 minute pace 5k racers.  I spent a mile dodging and weaving around these determined competitors.  I rolled across the line in 41 minutes flat, surprised at a 45 sec. improvement on last year's time.  It must have been the warmer day and the lucky baby blue crocs.

splits:  6:27 (6:29),  6:30 (6:45),  6:44 (6:51), 6:45 (6:42), 6:52 (6:59), 6:51 (6:53), 0:52 (1:04)  --the kick was better because there was no ice to navigate

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

The results are just posted...Age group win, 8th overall.  There were some timing screwups, cuz I don't think three guys ran sub-30 minute 10ks.

Nice race. I never realized drafting could be so dangerous.

From Rachelle on Thu, Nov 24, 2011 at 14:16:26 from 66.7.127.115

You rock Kam!! Nice job. Your splits are so consistent, you must teach me to pace. Congratulations!!

Excellent race, Kam. It was great running into you in the bathroom. Well, great to run into you, not necessarily in the bathroom. Glad you didn't run the 5k. Especially since we are now in the same age group. Happy belated birthday.

Kam,

happy birthday, and congratulations on a great way to celebrate Thanksgiving!!!

Gross! That's seriously nasty stuff. Congrats on the nice race and improvement from last year. I thought of driving from Smithfield to Farmington for the race but that thought didn't last long.

I think I saw you today! I was running the 5k and some guy ran by me and asked if I was doing the 5k or the 10k, and then he passed me and I saw he was wearing crocs. I thought about catching up to him and asking if he knew Sasha (because there are only so many people who run in crocs and I figure that they must all know each other), but then I didn't. Was that you? :)

Nice job Kam! Beware of snot rockets!!

From JD on Thu, Nov 24, 2011 at 19:36:03 from 97.117.107.109

your running ancestors probably doubted your choice of Cocoa Puffs - but i'm sure they stand corrected. nice race - well under a 7 minute pace.

From LymanW on Thu, Nov 24, 2011 at 23:03:37 from 75.169.109.6

Nice race today Kam. Do you know if they post the results?

From Kam on Fri, Nov 25, 2011 at 00:19:49 from 174.23.249.127

Thanks for the kind words, all.

Trap, in addition to being dangerous as a projectile, snot rockets can be a slipping hazard.

Rachelle, the last time I tried to give you a pacing lesson, you ran right past me with your pink socks in Ogden Valley.

Andy, you would have taken me easily in the 5k. Our meeting proves that great minds think alike.

Camillo, on a morning this warm in late November, there were many like minded individuals.

Russ, adding 3 more hours in the car wouldn't be worth it...especially for this course.

Catherine, that was me on 200 W. I hope your race turned out well. You started off very strong.

JD, I can't help my food choices; I'm cuckoo for cocoa puffs.

Lyman, they have posted results in the past, but I can't find any yet.

Snot Rockets!? Glad I didn't do the race, cause you know I would have been right there with you:) Congrats on the PR for the course!

Enjoyed your write up. Happy to see you are racing in Crocs. Best running shoe on the market.

From Bam on Fri, Nov 25, 2011 at 15:26:40 from 86.40.144.196

Nice run, Kam. Well done on the improvement from last year. "15 Step" is one tough track.

From Kelli on Fri, Nov 25, 2011 at 17:24:45 from 71.219.83.156

I actually think it was the cocoa puffs that did it!

From Claudio on Mon, Nov 28, 2011 at 15:47:02 from 216.99.185.50

Nothing better than a win to celebrate entering a new age group - happy belated birthday!

From Tara on Mon, Nov 28, 2011 at 17:38:21 from 75.169.159.43

AGE WINNER! YES! Watch out winter circuit 40 year olds!

Yeah, just looked at the results and I don't get it. Can't find your name?
