Jake and Andrea put on a wonderful event today at the Highland High track.  When I toed the line I knew I wasn't going to finish in the top 20% of the racers.  12.5 laps later, I think everyone except one runner had lapped me once, and Jake did twice.  I wonder when I'll see a 15 minute 5k again.

I forgot my watch, so running by feel was the order of the day.  I talked to Ashley, and she said she was shooting for sub-20, so I tried to stay in her vicinity.  I lost track of the laps, but figured out how many remained after Jake finished.  With two laps to go I was right at 17 minutes.  Needing to finish the last lap in 80 seconds, I tried to go faster.  It took 89 seconds.  I probably could have kicked a bit harder, but I was just on the right side of puking, or so I thought.  After finishing, I lost my oatmeal.

So I tried as hard as I could today, and that was the result.  It's a good benchmark for beginning some speed training for the next few months.  The trouble is, running faster requires faster training, and today felt awful.  I'm generally pretty content to lope along.

It was great to meet so many people from the blog.  Everyone was very nice and encouraging.  I particularly enjoyed the cooldown jog around the park after the faster running concluded.  I'm looking forward to OktoberFast 2.0 around Halloween.  Also, my son needs a shout-out for helping with the timing.  I should have assigned him to count my laps.

Nice job Kam and kudos to your son. It was nice to meet you. Round two should be a little cooler - see you then.

Nice job Kam! Really glad you were able to come and definitely plan on round 2 on the 29th. I didn't realize you lost your oatmeal afterwards... nothing puts the body to the limit like a hard 5K I guess! :-)

I didn't know you lost your oatmeal! haha It's hard to run a 5k without much speedwork. Thanks for coming out - tell your 7 kids that they need to come out with you and run!

nice job, kam. that is a very impressive time, especially considering you've been under the weather and have a marathon on your legs from just two weeks ago. i'm certain i would have been lapped three times yesterday and finished somewhere around 25:00.

jens did a great job with the timing. he knows how to use my watch better than i do. i'm looking forward to the 2.0 version as well -- next time i hope to be a participant. nice job once again, and nice seeing you yesterday.

Nice work Kam! Yeah, that speed work is hard to come by- especially after a marathon! 20 minutes is lookin' good!

Kam, it was nice meeting you yesterday. I forgot my watch too, kind of a bummer. Your son was a champ for helping out, he's a good kid.

Wow, I've been out of the loop for a while. College football is consuming my time. I'm interested in the race on the 29th. We have a home game that day so depending on the kickoff time I hope to receive an invite to this exclusive race.

Congrats on the AG win! I've never raced on a track before. It sounds like fun except for the puking part.

I must clarify, I assume I was the only person in my age division, definitely if you narrow it down to people born in 1971 who haven't had a birthday this year. Sometimes you are a winner by default.

LOL! A winner is a winner in my book, and Kam my friend, you are a winner anyway you look at it.
