9:36, 9:32, 8:33, 9:05, 9:11 7:05, 7:51, 7:54.  BST to Freedom Hills and home again.  I caught the tail end of the most fantastic sunset.  Having those two first two miles under 10 is a rare feat, if not the first time.  I've often had one or the other under 10, but rarely both.

I got a bit excited about the thought of running a marathon with no garmin...perhaps TOU.  I think I let that device dictate pace instead of my body.  Also, absent the proof the watch provides, I might be able to more effectively lie to myself and achieve a better result.  On the other hand, I may be able to more effectively lie to myself and run much more slowly.  These were my thoughts on the trail.  When I got down to the road,  I counted my steps for a mile.  This was boring.  While running a 7:05 mile on rollers, I took 1280, +/- 2 steps.

Nice run - those first two miles must be pretty steep.

It's good you counted your steps - knowledge is power!

i have never counted that high before. it does sounds boring, but now you have data. data is never boring.

about running watchless -- i think it helps a ton. i never use my garmin in races, mostly because the beeping irritates me. i do wear a simple stopwatch, as i like to see mile splits every now and then for some feedback. but i do much better when there is less focus on my wrist and more focus on running the pace my body will allow on the given day.

Some time I'll have to show you how to turn off the beeping. I always like listening to the chorus of Garmins on a race course. Mine, however, is mutely silent. Or silently mute. Either way, it's repetitive and redundant.

I only counted every 4th step.

I think you'll like not racing with your Garmin. I once raced a 15K with my garmin and after that I decided I'd never race with it again. I raced well with it, PR'd, but I was constantly watching the pace. I felt like a hamster on the wheel. I prefer a low tech running watch with a lap button to check my mile splits and total time.

I dream of ditching my garmin all the time. Maybe I will do it next year, I don't dare to do it this year:) I like Legacy Trail too, but got scared after those two incidences last year. I'm newer to the area, do I need to be scared? Most of my runs are at 5am when it is still dark...hummmm. Good to see another local here! oh, and BHS track is crazy. Totally right on everything you said and more.

Oh you need to find "Twinkies" on here, you guys seems to run about the same pace if I remember right. He's in Bountiful.

I'll have to keep noodling on the no garmin train of thought. By now I know what paces feel like under normal circumstances. Allie, it probably is a good idea to keep a low-tech watch just for a mile split here and there.

Tara, were there two things last year? I recall the one. You are probably right to play it safe if you are running alone in the dark that early. And more at the track? Sounds like a good story.

Matt and I did one run from Mueller Canyon to North Canyon. The punchline was we did it in January. He got hurt last year by fall, but it looks like he's up to his old tricks again.
