a.m.  Ash woke me up wanting to go for a run (get a donut).  She was so noisy getting dressed, she woke her sister.  I warned them it would be cold.  The were undeterred.  I spent the next half hour herding cats, and cut the run short to get them home.

work:  50 pushups in between cycle times on the electropolishing apparatus.  I know, I'm pretty huge already, and it isn't fair that I should become an even more imposing physical specimen, but that's how I roll.  Deal with it.

p.m.  After cutting down my dad's 30 year old river birch (sad to see a tree I grew up with go) I came home and finished up the day's mileage on the treadmill.  I went with one of the canned programs that varies speed and incline, but keeps things pretty challenging.  What are runner's thoughts on running slower speeds but high inclines?  It seems smart to me, as impacts are reduced, but heart-rate stays high.

Nice work Kam! I am impressed that you always get your workouts in with a new baby and 7 kids. You are amazing!

I am a fan of bumping up the incline on the treadmill. Especially since the hills kicked my butt so hard at SGM.

i have had two different injuries (surprise!) where i was able to run on an incline but not on flat (weird foot things). the incline forced me to run super slow, so i didn't pound or aggravate anything. i did short, 20 minute incline runs at 10% grade for a couple of weeks before ragnar one year. i didn't lose any fitness, and i think i may have even improved -- it was like i was running a 5k effort every day with zero impact on my body. maybe it should be the new trend in training...

Kam The Cat Herder - I think you're right to bang on the incline and slow the pace. You're still working hard (getting the HR up)and developing leg strength, and yet, you are less likely too suffer impact injuries - makes perfect sense.

And I'm with Rachelle, how you manage to find the time and energy to train with such a large family is beyond me; I struggle with a wife and two sprogs.

It seems like a good idea--drive up your heart-rate and minimize impact. One of my plans earlier this year was to buy a paragliding chute, and run up Skyline drive to the jump off point, and then fly down to my backyard. Well, adjacent to my backyard is a soccer pitch where gliders often land. The only trouble is the gear weighs 45 lbs, so that's more of a workout than I was looking for. But it would have got me uphill miles only.

Yeah, I too am impressed with all you do with your job and family. Also, great workout today and yes to the incline with less pounding!! Keep it up. I swore I saw you on Main today, but it looks like it was your twin and you were on the mill.
