Planned rest day today and I am excited to have it. Going to spend some time icing, sitting in the hot tub, and stretching. I have developed a couple of weird soreness areas that I want to work out. Both knees hurt a little but never when I run. The ache is right on the front of the knee and not down inside the joint. Also, my left foot/ankle had been sore. This is also a unique ache to me. I feel it more in the top left of my foot near my ankle. Because I am starting to log more miles I am going to get back in the habit of icing and I think these slight aches will subside. --runmehappy--

Nice 7.67 mile run with Adam and his brother this morning. It was a little longer than our typical weekday run but it felt really good. I really like that we have been running negative splits for nearly all of our runs lately.

5 mile run at about 11 o'clock in between my classes. This was my first "official" speed workout of my training. I set out wanting to get to the track on campus and run 5 miles with miles 3 and 4 at marathon pace (6:55). I got to the track, which was about .5 miles from where I started. Unfortunately the track looked more like a white field of snow. So, I decided to stick with the plan and still try and run my tempo 2 miles on the roads. I don't love to do this because it is more difficult than the track because of the ups and downs. It does make me stronger though. I was glad that I met my goals on miles 3 and 4 despite mile 3 having a 100ft climb. 1 | 7:40.7 | 1.00 | 7:41 | 2 | 7:44.5 | 1.00 | 7:44 | 3 | 6:53.4 | 1.00 | 6:53 | 4 | 6:53.0 | 1.00 | 6:53 | 5 | 8:04.8 | 1.00 | 8:05 | 6 | :02.3 | 0.01 | 7:20 |

4.36 nice miles. It felt really cold this morning but somehow I was feeling really good. I kept my watch under my jacket and decided to just run based on how I was feeling. I knew my first mile was a quick one but I just got on cruise control and held a quick pace. At about mile 3 I turned a corner and fell on the black ice on to my hands and knees. Luckily I was not going fast and didn't get hurt. Knees feel better today because I spent some quality time with the foam roller last night so I am happy about that. [update] I think a slightly pulled groin is manifesting itself now later in the day. I am pretty sure this happened when I slipped on the ice. Hopefully it is not bad and I will feel alright tomorrow morning for 5 miles with Adam. I have to remember that it could have been a worse result from today's fall. 1 | 7:22.8 | 1.00 | 7:23 | 2 | 7:13.0 | 1.00 | 7:13 | 3 | 7:03.3 | 1.00 | 7:03 | 4 | 7:01.7 | 1.00 | 7:02 | 5 | 2:21.8 | 0.36 | 6:30 |

Easy 5 miles with Adam this morning. We were lucky to get out before the freezing rain hit. My commute that normally takes about 45 minutes took me an 1hr 45min today! I felt pretty good, but was a little sore from the previous two days I think. My knees were a little tight again. I need to be more consistent with the stretching/foam rolling. I will hopefully get a little yoga and stretching/rolling in tonight so I am more loose tomorrow. (If you ever wonder why our 4th mile is always slower, it is because it is a gradual uphill. I looked today and it is about a 130ft climb.) 1 | 8:21.3 | 1.00 | 8:21 | 2 | 7:46.4 | 1.00 | 7:46 | 3 | 7:18.6 | 1.00 | 7:19 | 4 | 7:41.0 | 1.00 | 7:41 | 5 | 7:32.8 | 1.00 | 7:33 | 6 | :03.7 | 0.01 | 7:46 |

5 easy miles with Adam. It was still a little slick out on the roads so we had to take it a little slow. I was happy about this because I wanted to try and stick to about 8 min miles. As it turned out our AP was 8:04. My left foot is still bugging me, but it is not horrible. I can feel it ache for the first half mile of a run but then it goes away. I then can feel it during the day a little when I simply walk around. Going to try and take tomorrow's run pretty slow and see how the foot feels.

11 easy miles this morning. I was amazed by how thick the fog was when I went out. I couldn't see street lights until I was within about 100 meters. Pretty unusual for SLC. I really wanted to keep my average pace around 8 min or so and just focus on form and feeling fluid. I managed to do that for the most part. Every so often I caught myself going a little faster here and there and I would have to slow up a bit. At about a mile and half left I looked at the time and realized I was supposed to be home in about 10 minutes so my wife could go spinning. So, I tossed the whole 8 min thing out the window and cruised home. Overall I felt good. My foot didn't really hurt and my knees were only a little tight. I will get some good stretching and foam rolling in today and enjoy my day off tomorrow. PMish- Just went on a 2.5 mile hike with the family. It was super nice to get out and breath some fresh Park City air and to see for a few miles across the valley by my folks house. 1 | 7:40.5 | 1.00 | 7:40 | 2 | 8:01.0 | 1.00 | 8:01 | 3 | 8:04.1 | 1.00 | 8:04 | 4 | 7:49.9 | 1.00 | 7:50 | 5 | 8:07.3 | 1.00 | 8:07 | 6 | 7:57.4 | 1.00 | 7:57 | 7 | 8:00.3 | 1.00 | 8:00 | 8 | 7:53.6 | 1.00 | 7:54 | 9 | 7:59.9 | 1.00 | 8:00 | 10 | 7:46.0 | 1.00 | 7:46 | 11 | 7:15.7 | 1.00 | 7:16 | 12 | :30.4 | 0.07 | 7:03 |

Today was another scheduled rest day. Felt good to be off of my feet, but I was itching to go on a run. I am early in my training for Ogden so I need to continue to be disciplined and stick to my plan.
Iced my knees and ankle/foot tonight just for preventetive measures mostly. I need to get back in the habit of icing. I was good about that last training cycle.
My goal for this week is to hit 40 total miles and to get in a speed workout with some 400 meter repeats. I might also try and squeeze in a 2 mile tempo at marathon pace like last week in the middle of one of my runs depending on what day the repeats fall on. I will probably shoot for 11-12 miles on Saturday. |

I skipped this morning's run because of the storm and because I wanted to give my wife a break so I fed Grey for her so she could sleep in a bit. (Grey is our 10 month old daughter-FYI) PM - 5.85 - Headed out late afternoon down some pretty snowy/slushy roads with Brayden and his wife Ashley. I also brought Grey along in her stroller. She is a trooper! I felt like a was pushing a shopping cart through sand at times. (not that I have experience with that, but I could imagine it would be difficult) Needless to say, the snow and the "shopping cart" made for some slower miles, but it was a great workout. 1 | 9:20.1 | 1.00 | 9:20 | 2 | 8:57.9 | 1.00 | 8:58 | 3 | 8:25.5 | 1.00 | 8:25 | 4 | 8:12.4 | 1.00 | 8:12 | 5 | 8:20.1 | 1.00 | 8:20 | 6 | 7:04.8 | 0.85 | 8:20 |

5 miles - Pretty good run this morning with Adam. It was a little snowy and slushy in places which slowed us down a little, but it was a good easy pace. Started to snow more by the end of our run and once again I had an hour and 45 minute commute. Wondering how I am going to get in my speed workouts this week if the snow keeps up. Might try and hit up the indoor track or maybe just the roads if they dry up enough. 1 | 8:30.8 | 1.00 | 8:31 | 2 | 7:38.0 | 1.00 | 7:38 | 3 | 7:33.8 | 1.00 | 7:34 | 4 | 8:18.0 | 1.00 | 8:18 | 5 | 7:24.3 | 1.00 | 7:24 | 6 | :01.7 | 0.00 | 5:58 |

7 mile treadmill run this morning. This was my first time on the treadmill this year. Adam and I had planned to run outside but the storm changed our plans. I wanted to get in a speed workout this week and I thought today would be the best opportunity. I warmed up for 2 miles and then did the next 3 miles in 1/4 mile repeats of 1/4 on and 1/4 off. I ended up doing 6 1/4 miles on at 6:00 pace and the 6 1/4 miles off at 8:00 pace. I felt pretty good, but was definitely worn out. I ended with another 2 mile cool down. I hope to still work in a couple tempo miles at marathon pace this week. question for blog readers - would my 1.5 miles at the 6:00 pace be considered Threshold Miles or VO2 Max Miles...or neither? 1 | 7:57.0 | 1.00 |

6.2 easy miles. I tried to keep things right around an 8:00 pace, but once again I failed at that. My average pace was right at 8:00 but the 3 in the middle were too fast. AP was a 7:54 if I add in the last .2 that i purposely did a little faster. (the table below shows the AP without that .2) I headed to the indoor track on campus to give it a shot. I was moderately impressed and moderately disappointed. How is that for vague? The track is not full size, but is close. 5 laps equals a mile. This was not as bothersome as how hot it was in there. It really needed to be 10+ degrees cooler...or 20+. I wore my typical shorts and a short sleeve shirt and felt way over dressed. I really wanted this track to be a good place for me to go for speed workouts but don't know if I could handle a more intense workout in there. I would just get too hot I think because I even felt a little sluggish because of the heat on this easy run today. 1 | 8:42.3 | 1.00 | 0 | 2 | 8:08.4 | 1.00 | 0 | 3 | 7:39.8 | 1.00 | 0 | 4 | 7:42.8 | 1.00 | 0 | 5 | 7:26.7 | 1.00 | 0 | 6 | 8:18.0 | 1.00 | 0 | 7 | 1:16.8 | 0.00 | 0 |

5 easy miles with Adam this morning. It was good to have someone to run with again. Adam's knee has been bothering him, but he said it felt quite a bit better this morning. My quads were feeling a little sore. I think it is just part of a good run week. I am a little worried my long(er) run tomorrow will be more tough than I had hoped. Oh well.

12 miles - From my house past Oly high and back. I wanted to keep things under an 8:00 pace and gradually pick up the pace until the half-way mark. My 5th mile I slipped back on the pace a bit, but I am still happy with it because that mile has the longest hill on the route. I also wanted to run 2 miles at marathon pace so I am stoked that I got those in. The first 1.4 of those 2 miles had a slight downhill so I actually ran them a little faster. Overall I felt good, but was definitely sore by the end. My quads were feeling it which I think is just built up fatigue from this week. The good thing was that my calves didn't hurt at all which made me feel great! I am glad that I hit my mileage goal this week along with my 400 repeats and the 2 mile tempo. I feel good at where I am in my training so far. 1 | 8:00.2 | 1.00 | 8:00 | 2 | 7:54.9 | 1.00 | 7:55 | 3 | 7:52.9 | 1.00 | 7:53 | 4 | 7:51.1 | 1.00 | 7:51 | 5 | 7:57.3 | 1.00 | 7:57 | 6 | 7:49.8 | 1.00 | 7:50 | 7 | 6:50.0 | 1.00 | 6:50 | 8 | 6:42.9 | 1.00 | 6:43 | 9 | 7:46.3 | 1.00 | 7:46 | 10 | 7:53.8 | 1.00 | 7:54 | 11 | 7:55.5 | 1.00 | 7:55 | 12 | 7:55.7 | 1.00 | 7:56 |

Scheduled rest day today. It was a nice break. Crazy thing is that we went to bed last night at 8:30 and woke up this morning at 7:30. Yup, we all slept 11 hours! Took a hot bath in the middle of the day and did some stretching. Then I iced a little during the super bowl as I read a running book and worked on my training schedule.
Goals for this week: 45 total miles 800 repeats Tempo run longer than this past week |

6 easy miles this morning. I went out just for an easy run not worrying about my pace. I also wore my heart rate strap for the first time in a long while. (the last time I wore it I had all kinds of problems where I was getting a reading of 225bpm while at an 8:20 pace)
The heart rate strap must have been working this time. I averaged a 154. I actually felt pretty sluggish the first 3 miles. I think I have a mental block when I wear my heart rate strap. I start to worry too much about my heart rate even though I am not looking at my watch. I think this worrying naturally causes my heart rate to rise. By mile 3 I must have finally forgot I was wearing it and everything seemed a lot easier. I finally got in a rhythm and the next thing I knew the run was over.
I think part of feeling sluggish at the beginning was the fact that I took yesterday off. Might have taken my body a few miles to work out cobwebs.

8.2 miles. 2 mile warmup and then 800 repeats then cool down. Pretty hard workout for sure. I ran 6 x 800 repeats and wanted to hold roughly a 6:00 pace, so run each in 3 minutes. The first one I ran a little fast because I was indoor again and didn't know exactly how fast I was moving until I completed one lap. I ended up backing off a little for the 4th and 5th repeats because I was not feeling great. It is just a little too hot at the indoor track for speed and the air was SO dry. I was coughing more after the run that I have in a long time. Overall, I still feel good about the workout, even though I had to back off a little. I am a little mad at myself though. I should have tried to just push through and not slow down so much. I met a great guy at the track during my warmup that offered to pace me at the end. I was stoked that he offered because it totally helped, as you can see my last repeat came in right at 3:00. I would have liked to have not backed off so much on the 4th and 5th repeats, but oh well. I will try harder next time. 1 - 2:43.8 2 - 3:01.3 3 - 3:02.2 4 - 3:13.8 5 - 3:12.7 6 - 3:00.6 My heart rate avg was 158 and on one of the repeats I hit 182. Full HR data. update: I decided to look up this similar workout that I did in the summer when I was training for the BCC marathon. I feel a little better after looking at it. My splits then were - 2:45.1 - 2:53.1 - 3:13.4 - 3:27.8 - 3:18.4 - 3:12.7 - I need to work on not going out so fast. Once again, hard indoors.

8 miles - 2 mile warmup, 4 mile at marathon pace, and 2 mile cool down. Overall I felt pretty good on this run. It was the longest tempo I have done. I was super glad to have Adam there to help pace me. If I was solo I probably would have slacked when it start to get tough. My heart rate peaked on the tempo at 177 and probably averaged in the low 170s for the 4 miles. Full HR data. My quads are pretty tired and sore so I spent the last hour rotating from the sauna to the steam room and stretching and massaging. 12 easy miles - some with Brayden. This was a weird run where I didn't feel 100%. Now that I am writing this almost a week later I know why. I was getting (more)sick. I wanted to go out and not worry about my pace and just cruise at what felt comfortable. Tyler suggested this at lunch on Friday. As it turned out I ran slower than I thought I was going to. I just was feeling weak. I still averaged faster than my long runs in the summer last year so that is good. | Took a scheduled rest day today. Not feeling so healthy right now. On Friday and Saturday I woke up in the middle of the nights having sweated through the sheets. I am either hot or I am really cold during the day. I hope that taking it easy today makes me feel good enough to run in the morning and I can have another good week. Overall, I feel really good about this week of running. I hit all of my goals. I wanted to run 45 total miles, do 800s, and get a 4 mile tempo run in. I am stoked that I did all of this! Goals for this coming week (if healthy) - Maintain at 45 miles - 1 mile repeats - another 4 mile tempo. |

6 easy on the treadmill. Wow! So almost a week went by without running. I was crazy sick with some odd virus that I couldn't kick. I am glad for modern medicine that finally got rid of it. It was good to get back moving again. Chose the treadmill so I could bail and just come upstairs to bed if I needed to. I felt pretty good, but could tell I was still weak. Will be interesting to see how I feel on tomorrow's long(er) run. I am not stoked that I lost 4 days of training, but I have been feeling lousy since the first of December and was in a really bad way at the beginning of this week. I don't think the time off will really have any negative effects on my training because I have a decent amount of time left before my race. At least that is what I hope. AP = 8:26 - Full HR data.

| AM - 4 miles - 2 mile warmup, 1 mile at 6:00, 1 mile cooldown. - Ran this across Wasatch because the tracks are all covered in snow still. Felt decent, but was a little bothered by how hard the 6 min mile felt. PM - 4 miles on the treadmill - 2 mile warmup, 1 mile at 6:00, 1 mile cooldown. - Because I wanted to get more in this morning but didn't I hopped on the treadmill for round 2. I would have liked to do the 1 mile a little faster but my treadmill maxes at 10mph. Once again I felt pretty burned out by the end of that mile. I think my legs were feeling sore from this morning. | 7 miles fun run this morning with Adam. It was good to run with someone again. I have had a lot of solo runs lately. We kept it casual with some faster burts here and there. It is always good to run fast with Adam because he pushes me down under the 6:00 pace. Opted for this workout over a tempo segment. | 5 miles - 2 mile warmup and then 2 miles where every .2 miles I sped up the treadmill .2/mph. Got up to 6:40 pace and ran that for a half mile, then did a 1 mile cooldown. Opened the door to join Adam for a run and was upset to see the snow falling. Decided it was better to hit the treadmill. I listened to the podcast yesterday that Adam posted by Rich Roll with him talking to Brian Mackenzie. Interesting stuff in there. I might try and pick up Mackenzie's book. 12 miles - today felt good. glad i woke up and got out when i did. the storm and wind rolled in right after i finished. my left hamstring started to hurt yesterday but it was not impeding today. it took a few miles for it to loosen up and for me to not notice it anymore. I mixed up my route a little bit and it caused for the first half to be almost all a gradual uphill. the climb was not miserable but it was about 375 ft. with a couple of long hauls. I feel really good about my splits though and my AP of 7:48. I just ran off of feel again and didn't look at my watch. I would hear it beep every mile and would resist looking. 7 miles with Adam. Had a good 7 mile run with Adam. We averaged a 7:38 pace, which I was stoked with because we were just taking it easy and chatting along the way. We mixed up our route a little, but we still covered some of the same miles. We ran our first mile almost 40 seconds faster than we normally do. Our "hill" mile we ran considerably faster too. I can't remember the exact time, but will post the splits when I get home from work. Feeling pretty good overall. My hamstring didn't act up at all on the run so who knows what that little thing was that I felt over the weekend. Glad it is gone though. 9 miles with Adam. This was an intense run with a mega hill going up fort union blvd. Total climb was 487ft, give or take. We had set out to do some 1/4 mile repeats hoping to do 8 of them, but the snow changed that plan. When we started it was not coming down too bad and we thought that after the hill at the half way point we would be able to pick up the pace and get the repeats in. The snow worsened as we went. We clipped the last 4 miles off at a decent pace, but didn't get the repeats in. That is ok though. We had a great run, it was a great workout, and we will sneak the repeats in on Thursday. Going to head to the steam room and sauna and stretch and relax a little in between my classes today. I always look forward to that! 1 | 7:52.6 | 1.00 | 7:53 | 2 | 7:53.1 | 1.00 | 7:53 | 3 | 7:41.3 | 1.00 | 7:41 | 4 | 8:28.2 | 1.00 | 8:28 | 5 | 8:10.7 | 1.00 | 8:11 | 6 | 7:17.8 | 1.00 | 7:18 | 7 | 7:36.8 | 1.00 | 7:37 | 8 | 7:31.7 | 1.00 | 7:32 | 9 | 7:20.8 | 1.00 | 7:21 | 10 | :03.7 | 0.01 | 6:17 |

Interestingly we just kept an easy pace and chatted along the way but our average pace was 7:32. I was way stoked for this because I think it shows that I am getting faster. This is still a crawl for Adam so I am glad he doesn't just ditch me! |

I had been worrying about this workout for a few days. Up until we started, and during, I wanted to just bag it and go for an easy run. I am glad we stuck to it though. We did eight (8) 1/4 mile repeats. I am glad Adam was there because he is fast and he pushed me to run tough. We rested between 1:14 and 2:20. I wanted to try and get my HR down between each repeat. When I looked between one my HR monitor was freaking out and was at 225 so that was not helpful.
85 - 84 - 78 - 77.5 - 76 - 75.4 - 82.5 - 74.9
Times are a little different than Adam's because I think he was actually going farther! Either way it was a good morning.
PM - 3 super easy to loosen up a little. Whit is out of town so what else am I supposed to do!
-- I feel good that I wrapped up the month over 150 miles even with 4 sick days! --

15 miles - This was a solid run for sure. I kind of needed a long thinking run that had a bit of meaning for me. I decided that I should head from home up to wasatch and run part of the course from the BCC marathon I ran in September. I guess I needed to face some of my demons and show them that I could handle them. Overall, I felt really good. This was my longest run this year and I really focused on not losing any form over the course of almost 2 hours on my feet. I tossed in 2 miles at marathon pace just for a little pick me up in the middle. Those felt surprisingly good, but I didn't want to push it any more than that because (1) I had not mentally prepared for more and (2) I really wanted to slow up and just feel good through the whole thing. I feel good about this week and hitting my goals. I originally said that I wanted to hit 45-50 miles but then changed that to a solid 50 after Monday's run. I hit 51.5! I also got in my 400 repeats and ran a couple miles at marathon pace. Next week I want to get in a longer tempo, but I will put that on tomorrow's post with my other goals. 1 | 8:03.4 | 1.00 | 8:03 | 2 | 8:04.7 | 1.00 | 8:05 | 3 | 8:01.6 | 1.00 | 8:02 | 4 | 8:35.3 | 1.00 | 8:35 | 5 | 8:05.5 | 1.00 | 8:05 | 6 | 7:47.7 | 1.00 | 7:48 | 7 | 7:56.4 | 1.00 | 7:56 | 8 | 7:03.7 | 1.00 | 7:04 | 9 | 6:51.8 | 1.00 | 6:52 | 10 | 7:51.9 | 1.00 | 7:52 | 11 | 7:37.0 | 1.00 | 7:37 | 12 | 7:48.8 | 1.00 | 7:49 | 13 | 8:07.1 | 1.00 | 8:07 | 14 | 7:52.4 | 1.00 | 7:52 | 15 | 7:52.0 | 1.00 | 7:52 |

Scheduled rest day.
I was tired all day today. I hopped in the hot tub at my folks and tried to relax, stretch, and massage a little. When I got out I laid on the floor and fell asleep for 30 minutes. Decided that was a pretty good sign I was worn out.
Goals this week - 50 miles - 800s - 4-5 mile tempo.

8 easy miles.
Ran my typical route, just a little farther. A nice out and back. I didn't take my watch and just enjoyed the run. Felt good to just get the legs loose and enjoy a clear morning before the sun came up. |

9 miles - 4 of which were run doing 8 x 800 repeats. Ran a 2 mile warmup, had the 400 meter recoveries in between each 800, and then a little over a mile cooldown back to my house. Headed to the track this morning for my speed workout for the week. 8 x 800s. My goal was to have all of these come in at 3:00 or below. I am stoked that I did that, almost. The last one was 3:02, but this is me pushing the button on my watch and I easily could have been off give or take a couple seconds. I don't want to make excuses, but I do want to note that there were about 80 meters of the track at the south bend that was completely frozen. It was a sheet of ice. So, I had to step on to the turf for part of that bend. I tried not to let this slow me down, but I know I was just a little hesitant as I ran across this section because there was just enough frost on the turf that I could see my footprints. So, with these conditions I feel really good about this workout. It is worth looking at the average paces, distances, and times. Overall, looking at these three, I feel great about this workout. | 8 easy miles - I just did my typical route but I tried to take it as easy as possible. (I think I was right around an 8:30 to 8:45 pace, but will check and post my data when I get home later.) This was actually quite difficult. I was forcing myself to slow down. I have read/listened a lot lately about the importance of taking your easy days easy. I want some feedback on this so if you happen to read this please let me know your thoughts by commenting below. A lot of people refer to the grey area as a pace where it is not really pushing you too much, but it is not really easy either. If you always train in this area then you will not progress. Now, I am not worried about always training in the "grey area" because I am doing speed work and tempo runs pretty regularly. I am more worried that I am doing more harm by going a little too hard on my "easy" days and really letting these runs be recovery days. I have heard that "easy" days should be between 1:00 to 2:00 slower than marathon pace (6:55). For example, yesterday I ran 9 miles, during which I ran 8x800s. It was my speed day. So, today I should theoretically run "easy." I could pretty effortlessly go out and clip along at an average pace of 7:45-8:00 and not really feel like I as pushing myself too hard. However, If I am going to truly take it "easy," I could run as slow as 8:55. So, my 2 thoughts are these: (1) 7:45-8:00 really is my "easy" pace as I have gradually become a faster runner and I should not worry so much, OR (2) I need to be more disciplined and I should try and slow down on my "easy" days like I tried to today. Thoughts? Advice? Tips? |

9 miles - 2 mile warmup, 5 mile tempo, 2 mile cool down. I am starting to coin Thursdays as "tempo Thursday." I know "tempo Tuesday" rolls off of the tongue better, but I don't do tempo runs on Tuesday. I felt really good on this run overall. It was a great confidence booster too. I decided to give my typical route a shot with the tempo in the middle instead of trying to find the most flat route available. I figured this would push me a little because my route does have a little bit of a climb, but not a ton. My goal was to clip off 5 miles at marathon pace (6:55). I was feeling good after the first tempo mile, which has the most uphill, so I decided to give myself a little leeway to go a hair faster if I could. I was a little hesitant because I didn't want to fall apart early and not finish all 5 miles, but it turned out well. AP for the tempo - 6:47.12 Now, maybe my slower pace yesterday really did help me recover more fully. I guess I will not know for sure if I would have been able to perform the same today had I run a little faster yesterday, but I don't care really. I accomplished what I wanted to so far this week having done my 800s and my tempo and now I have a couple more easy runs to wrap it up! 1 | 8:18.3 | 1.00 | 8:18 | 2 | 7:59.7 | 1.00 | 8:00 | 3 | 6:47.7 | 1.00 | 6:48 | 4 | 6:49.7 | 1.00 | 6:50 | 5 | 6:45.6 | 1.00 | 6:46 | 6 | 6:49.8 | 1.00 | 6:50 | 7 | 6:42.8 | 1.00 | 6:43 | 8 | 8:03.8 | 1.00 | 8:04 | 9 | 7:58.5 | 1.00 | 7:58 |

16 miles. I had a good long(er) run this morning. Left my house at 6:10 and met up with Brayden after 4 miles. Ran 8 with Brayden and then the last 4 back home solo. My average pace was a 7:44 and that felt nice. I pushed myself once at the beginning for half a mile and then I ran at marathon pace for 2 miles around miles 13 and 14. I wanted to push a couple miles to marathon pace near the end of the run to see how it felt. Surprisingly I felt good and could have gone another mile, but I wanted to have the last two be a little slower to "cool down" a bit. At the beginning of the run my quads were a little sore and I mentioned to Brayden that I was feeling a little tired/weak. I attributed it to having a good running week and it just being cumulative fatigue. I loosened up and overall felt good. My knees were a little tight near the end as well, but that is to be expected from this distance for me. I iced them up when I got home and they feel fine now. I feel good about this week and having hit all of my goals. I look forward to a rest day tomorrow and then starting another week. Only 2 months until race day. [update] After uploading the data from my watch and looking at my splits a day later, I am super pleased with this run. Brayden and I started speeding up around my 10th mile and the rest of the run was a decent pace for me. 1 | 8:30.8 | 1.00 | 8:31 | 2 | 8:05.5 | 1.00 | 8:05 | 3 | 7:57.6 | 1.00 | 7:58 | 4 | 7:36.9 | 1.00 | 7:37 | 5 | 7:57.3 | 1.00 | 7:57 | 6 | 8:04.9 | 1.00 | 8:05 | 7 | 8:16.3 | 1.00 | 8:16 | 8 | 7:58.5 | 1.00 | 7:59 | 9 | 7:52.0 | 1.00 | 7:52 | 10 | 7:39.9 | 1.00 | 7:40 | 11 | 7:27.8 | 1.00 | 7:28 | 12 | 7:27.4 | 1.00 | 7:27 | 13 | 7:16.0 | 1.00 | 7:16 | 14 | 6:52.1 | 1.00 | 6:52 | 15 | 7:32.4 | 1.00 | 7:32 | 16 | 7:10.9 | 1.00 | 7:11 | 17 | :01.1 | 0.00 | 8:08 |

| Scheduled rest day today. We got a ton of sleep last night even with it being daylight savings! 10 hours is solid for sure. After a hearty breakfast of pancakes and a little time playing with Grey I took an hour nap too! Goals for this week - I think I am going to stay right around 55 miles and not try to push it past that yet. I week of maintaining, as it were. I am going to stick to speed on Tuesday with the goal of 1 mile repeats. Thursday I am going to shoot for another tempo of 5 miles. If I am feeling up for it, I might push that to 6. My Saturday run will either be 16 or 17. |

| 8 easy miles I ran over to the track to meet a buddy over there that wanted to run 400s for his first time. I mostly just took it easy like I had planned for today, but I did pace him on one 400 so he could get a feel for how fast he wanted to go. Being on the track made me want to get my speed work in today, but I have it planned for tomorrow so I decided to stick with that. It was nice to just get out and get the legs moving after taking yesterday off. |

| 8 miles - 2 miles and a bit warmup, 3 x 1 mile repeats, and a cool down of just under 2. It was nice to have Adam to run with again. Company is good, but company on speed days is great! I have kind of felt like there has been a mental, more than physical, wall at the 6:00 min mile. I wanted to try and break that wall down a little bit today and it felt good. We ran the first mile right at 6:00, the next at 5:55, and the last at 5:52. I am happy about this speed workout and I hope that this workout boosts my confidence and I won't be afraid of the 6:00 min mile barrier anymore. 4 | 5:59.9 | 1.00 | 6:00 | 6 | 5:55.5 | 1.00 | 5:55 | 8 | 5:51.8 | 1.00 | 5:52 |

I felt good during the tempo and was having fun while I was doing it. I am glad that I hit the 6 miles under marathon pace. I don't know exactly what my goal is going to be in the next two months before my race with the tempo runs. I originally thought I would work my way up to 10 and stop there, but now I am considering maybe continuing to up it each week by 1 mile. That would push me to 13 or 14 miles depending on when I do my last tempo before tapering. | 8 easy miles I met up with Brayden and Ashley to run 8 easy this morning. I wanted to test myself and go with Adam on his tempo, but I knew that would not be the smartest thing for me or my training. I am sure he killed his 5 miles though. Because I was running a little late this morning, long night with a sick child, Ashley took off before I got to their house. Brayden and I ran a little fast the first mile and the second mile way too fast for this easy day so we could catch her, but I knew we would have 6 slow ones after so it was ok. 1 | 7:58.0 | 1.00 | 7:58 | 2 | 7:05.0 | 1.00 | 7:05 | 3 | 8:23.6 | 1.00 | 8:24 | 4 | 8:33.4 | 1.00 | 8:33 | 5 | 8:50.7 | 1.00 | 8:51 | 6 | 8:15.4 | 1.00 | 8:15 | 7 | 8:19.9 | 1.00 | 8:20 | 8 | 8:08.7 | 1.00 | 8:09 | 9 | :04.2 | 0.01 | 8:11 |

17.5 miles. Logged 17.5 this morning, 12 of which were with Adam. It was super nice of him to tag along for as long as he did. He only planned on doing 8 with me so he might hate me tomorrow. Overall, I felt good with this long(er) run. The first 3 miles I had a few kinks to work out but they vanished once Adam and I got into our conversations. I felt similar the first few miles of my run last Saturday. Now that is is 8pm I realize how this run and this week have worn me out. I have felt pretty sluggish all day and I am excited for a good night's rest and the day of tomorrow. Goals - I feel great about this week and hitting my goals. I pushed a little past my goal of 55 miles, hit my mile repeats on Tuesday, and my tempo on Thursday I pushed to 6 miles. 8 easy miles with Adam this morning. I was feeling a little tight in my knees, but nothing out of the usual little tightness. 9.25 - 2 mile warmup - 10 x 1/4 mile repeats - 2 and a bit cool down. Well, the last 24 hours have been less than desirable. I have been working for almost a year for a firm downtown. I have technically been a clerk waiting for a full-time offer. If you know anything about the process of law school and finding a job, up to this point I have done everything "right." I have tried to check every box. I was in the top of my class, got on law review, and got a clerkship my second summer. That clerkship has continued and I have been working part-time during this school year. Yesterday, I met with the managing partner of the firm and he told me that they will not be extending me an offer. His exact words were, "don't count on it." He was kind enough to say that he would write me a good recommendation though! So, when I got home I wanted to put on my shoes and just start running until I couldn't go any farther. I then realized that that type of a run would not fit well into my training schedule! (stupid logical mind got the best of me) So, instead I just waited for this morning's run. However, when I woke up I just didn't have the fire that I did last night. It is hard to do a track workout when you get to the track and it is locked. I tried to not let this bug me, but I was really looking forward to trying to shred the track apart with my 400s. I improvised and decided to just do some 1/4 mile pickups or repeats on my normal route. Because my route has a decent amount of change in elevation, I decided that I would be happy with running my 1/4 miles in 80 seconds, and hoped to run some in 75. (75 was my original goal for the track) Overall, I felt OK with this run. I didn't feel great, but I finished it. By the end I was pretty spent dodging cars at a 5:00 min pace! Sorry for such a long post. Sorry. PM - Came home from school and ran 2.5 miles with Whit and Grey. Whit is just getting back in to running so it was a nice slow pace. She did great though. It was nice for me because I was, and am still, feeling pretty tight in my calves from this morning. This short jaunt loosened them up a bit. I look forward to a nice easy run tomorrow.

| 9.75 easy miles this morning. Met up with Adam but he had to head downtown for work so we only ran 5 together. Felt great on the run but my legs are still sore from yesterday as I write this (it is about 8pm). We left Salt Lake about 1pm today and drove up to Jackson Wyoming. I am going to still try and get in my tempo in the morning but I have no idea on which streets to run. |

8 miles behind Adam. 2 mile warmup, 4 a little quicker than marathon pace, 2 mile cool down. Had thought and was planning on doing my tempo this morning in Jackson but we awoke to snow and wind. We luckily wrapped up there early and headed home. Adam hadn't run yet so we headed to Wasatch for a tempo session at about 5:15pm. Lack of sleep and driving almost 600 miles in 24 hours showed on this run. It didn't help that there was a headwind for part too. Overall, I still feel good about the run. Because it was a little shorter tempo than last week I think I still might try and run several miles at marathon pace during my long(er) run Saturday. 1 | 8:16.0 | 1.00 | 8:16 | 2 | 8:11.9 | 1.00 | 8:12 | 3 | 6:38.3 | 1.00 | 6:38 | 4 | 6:47.0 | 1.00 | 6:47 | 5 | 6:41.1 | 1.00 | 6:41 | 6 | 6:47.6 | 1.00 | 6:48 | 7 | 8:40.3 | 1.00 | 8:40 | 8 | 8:31.9 | 1.00 | 8:32 |

8 easy, 2 solo and 6 with Tyler. It was a good morning. Nice and clear and crisp. We finished just in time I think. Small flakes started falling right when we finished. Tyler told me it is supposed to snow a lot tonight. 18 miles - 10.5 of the miles Adam was nice enough to join me on. I feel better right now after 18 this morning than I did last week after my 17.5. That is a good thing. It was a fun run overall. We had snow coming down pretty heavily for the first 9 miles. It was then nice and clear with the occasional nasty road condition. Mile 10 was actually a good 30 seconds or so faster, for those of you who really want to get nitpicky. I managed to step in a huge puddle and completely soak my right foot. I thought I paused my watch while I was assessing the situation, but didn't. We clipped off 4 miles at marathon pace to see how my legs would hold up. It felt good to let the legs loose for a bit. Every once in a while it was a little sketchy at that pace with the road conditions and cars flying by, but overall it was fun. We slowed up for mile 15 and then I tried to close the last 3 miles strong after dropping Adam at his house. Overall, I feel good about my goals even though I didn't hit them right on the head. I mixed them up a bit and feel fine about that. I ran a few more miles than I had anticipated, which is fine with me. I got in my 400s, but missed the full tempo. That is ok though because my tempo ended up being at a high exertion level and then I got in another 4 at marathon pace during my long run. I feel like it was a successful week. 1 | 8:22.2 | 1.00 | 8:22 | 2 | 8:06.8 | 1.00 | 8:07 | 3 | 8:04.4 | 1.00 | 8:04 | 4 | 8:19.1 | 1.00 | 8:19 | 5 | 8:41.9 | 1.00 | 8:42 | 6 | 8:44.4 | 1.00 | 8:44 | 7 | 8:22.8 | 1.00 | 8:23 | 8 | 8:30.9 | 1.00 | 8:31 | 9 | 8:30.9 | 1.00 | 8:31 | 10 | 8:25.5 | 1.00 | 8:25 | 11 | 6:56.0 | 1.00 | 6:56 | 12 | 6:53.9 | 1.00 | 6:54 | 13 | 6:50.8 | 1.00 | 6:51 | 14 | 6:48.6 | 1.00 | 6:49 | 15 | 7:58.5 | 1.00 | 7:59 | 16 | 7:34.0 | 1.00 | 7:34 | 17 | 7:32.3 | 1.00 | 7:32 | 18 | 7:23.2 | 1.00 | 7:23 |

| Scheduled rest day. I am feeling better today than I did last Sunday, even though I ran more miles and had a little longer run yesterday than the previous Saturday. Goals for this week - Maintain right around 60-65 total miles. - Speed work on Tuesday, shooting for 800s. (I don't know how many I will do. I might do around 6, but try and do them a little faster than my previous set of 800s) - I would like to get a tempo in of 7 miles as well on Thursday. |

9.25 miles this AM. - Fun to get out with Tyler and Adam. I felt great on this run. Nice to have an easy day after last week's miles and long run on Saturday. I still am feeling a little tight in my right lower calf from last Tuesday's speed workout I think, but it is not inhibiting my running. Those 400s really blew up my legs last week. I need to be better about stretching!!! There is always something to work on. |

9.75 miles - 2 mile warmup - 6 x 800s - 2 x 200s - cool down. I feel really good about this workout. I planned on doing 6 x 800s and doing the first one at a 5:45 pace and then doing each one 0:05 faster. I was stoked to pull this off. After those I decided to do a couple 200s to just rock at full speed for a bit. 20 miles - Ran 10.75 solo and the rest with Brayden This was a fun run and it was great weather this morning. I feel really good about this 20 miler. I feel like there is this mental fear with running 20 miles and today was my best 20 miler to date. Last year I felt good on my 20 milers but always struggled the last couple of miles. Today I was able to finish strong so I am happy about that. The other day Tyler said that I need to remember that I am in better shape and I am a better runner than last year. I am starting to believe him a little bit now. Today is Grey's first birthday so we are having a little party etc. I can't believe she is already a year old. 1 | 8:23.5 | 1.00 | 8:23 | 2 | 8:04.6 | 1.00 | 8:05 | 3 | 8:04.6 | 1.00 | 8:05 | 4 | 8:08.2 | 1.00 | 8:08 | 5 | 7:48.8 | 1.00 | 7:49 | 6 | 7:43.8 | 1.00 | 7:44 | 7 | 7:58.0 | 1.00 | 7:58 | 8 | 7:46.9 | 1.00 | 7:47 | 9 | 7:32.5 | 1.00 | 7:33 | 10 | 7:44.7 | 1.00 | 7:45 | 11 | 7:47.8 | 1.00 | 7:48 | 12 | 7:51.5 | 1.00 | 7:52 | 13 | 7:50.3 | 1.00 | 7:50 | 14 | 7:52.0 | 1.00 | 7:52 | 15 | 7:43.4 | 1.00 | 7:43 | 16 | 7:38.6 | 1.00 | 7:39 | 17 | 7:32.8 | 1.00 | 7:33 | 18 | 7:24.1 | 1.00 | 7:24 | 19 | 7:10.1 | 1.00 | 7:10 | 20 | 7:02.5 | 1.00 | 7:03 |

| Scheduled rest day. Felt good to have a nice relaxing Easter! I felt good this past week. Was probably the best running week I have ever had. I was able to hit all of my goals or exceed them in a bit. Goals this week - I am going to bump up the miles just a bit and shoot for 70-73. I am shooting for mile repeats on Tuesday. I think I will do 4 x 1 mile repeats at a 6:00 min pace or just under. This past week I did a 7.5 mile tempo so I want to bump that up a bit, but don't know by how much. I will either do 8 or 8.5. I plan on doing a 20 miler on Saturday again too. Should be a good week! |

10.5 easy miles this morning. - 4 solo and 6.5 with Tyler. When I left my house at 5:55 the wind was blowing and it was starting to rain. It got worse and during the first mile I thought about calling it quits many times. I looked up at the clouds and said, "You can rain all you want in an hour and a half!" By mile 2 the wind had stopped and the rain was easing up. The last 5 miles were completely dry with no wind. I doubt the clouds listened to me at all, but it was a nice outcome!

10 miles - 4 x 1 mile repeats sandwiched between a warmup and cool down. I went to bed last night hoping that I wouldn't wake up to a complete downpour. Luckily it was only drizzling so I headed to the track. Thankfully, Adam met me there. He ran casually around the inside of the track on the turf so it was nice to chat with him in-between each of the repeats and to run the warmup and cool down with him. I had a goal to run the first repeat at a 6:00 min pace and then run each of the 3 following repeats about 5 seconds faster, running the last one at 5:45. I was stoked to pull this off and do even better by a couple of seconds. Repeat Distance Time 1 1 mile 5:54 2 1 mile 5:49 3 1 mile 5:45 4 1 mile 5:40

| 11.75 miles - 1.5 warmup, 8.5 tempo, 1.75 cool down. Adam was nice enough to join me for the majority of the tempo. It was nice to have some company on this tougher run for sure. Overall, I felt good on this tempo run. However, I went through some ups and downs during the run. The third mile of the tempo was actually our fastest even though it had the most uphill. I pushed it up the hill and felt good about it, but then I felt the worst during mile 4. That mile was mostly flat with a little uphill, but I did not feel great during it. My left quad felt a little odd for about a mile. Thankfully, around mile 5 I loosened back up and felt really smooth. I was only planning on doing 8 miles when I awoke, but decided to go an extra .5 because I was feeling good enough at the end. During the run I mentioned to Adam that 4 months ago I never would have believed anyone if they told me that I could do this workout successfully. | 20 miles - almost 10 to Brayden and Ashley's house, they joined me for 6, and I finished up solo. (I knew I had to run .14 to even up my miles for the week so I did a little cool down after the 20 miles so I could count that.) Felt good overall, which actually surprised me because of having so many miles already on my legs this week. My quads were sore from the beginning and didn't really ease up much during the run. I attribute this to cumulative fatigue from the miles I logged this week and the week before and the months stacked on that. The fatigue didn't affect me too much though. I was able to hold a good pace and even decided to give it a little kick the last 4 miles. I was happy to see my average HR was 154. | 10.25 easy miles this morning. - Ran the majority of the run with Tyler and we completely beat the rain! The inside of my right knee has been a little sore. The feeling is like a little twinge that I feel every so often when I am sitting. I only felt it for about 30 feet of the run this morning and it was when the shoulder of the road we were on had a lot more camber. I hopped on the sidewalk at that portion and didn't feel it again the rest of the run. I am going to keep icing it and watch it for a couple days to make sure it doesn't materialize into anything serious. |

11 miles (track workout) - couple mile warmup - 4 laps at the track of striders where I accelerated on the straights and slowed up on the curves - 12 x 400 repeats - few mile cool down. I was a little worried about this run because of the weather and I really didn't want my knee to hurt. When I went to bed last night I didn't know if it was going to be snowing, but I knew it would be windy. Luckily, it was not snowing when I left my house but the wind was still blowing strong. My knees and my heels were a little sore for about the first mile, but then I started to loosen up and I was stoked that my knee didn't hurt at all during the rest of the run, including the 400 meter repeats! When I talked to Tyler yesterday about my planned workout he said to shoot for a 6:00 min pace or better even if the headwind was blowing strong down one of the straights. So that is what I planned for for the first little while. I decided to speed up a bit gradually, but I didn't want to push too hard because I knew I had 12 of these to finish. I accomplished my goal and feel really good about it. Even though they were not all the fastest splits I could have done, I feel good about them given the wind and the cold. split time distance pace 4 | 1:34.0 | 0.26 | 5:59 | 6 | 1:34.5 | 0.27 | 5:53 | 8 | 1:32.5 | 0.26 | 5:53 | 10 | 1:30.0 | 0.26 | 5:40 | 12 | 1:30.3 | 0.27 | 5:39 | 14 | 1:30.5 | 0.27 | 5:33 | 16 | 1:27.2 | 0.26 | 5:31 | 18 | 1:27.0 | 0.27 | 5:20 | 20 | 1:23.3 | 0.26 | 5:20 | 22 | 1:22.4 | 0.27 | 5:09 | 24 | 1:18.7 | 0.26 | 4:59 | 26 | 1:16.0 | 0.26 | 4:53 |

12 miles - 5 at tempo
I am not too stoked about this morning’s run. I learned last year that
every so often there are going to be bad days. You cannot have a perfect day
everyday! Today was one of those days. It was raining pretty heavily still when
I woke up so I text Adam and decided it was best to hit the treadmill. That was
the mistake of the morning. I should have just battled the rain. I have only
run a few times on the treadmill this year and I don’t plan to again any time
soon. I feel like it is more difficult for me to run on a treadmill. Does
anyone else feel that way? I overheat. I sweat until I am drenched. I just
don’t feel good! So, I had planned on doing an 8 mile tempo, but after 3 miles
I knew today was not my day. I eked out nearly 5 miles before I called it and slowed
up the pace. I knew I had to finish the workout so I continued to the end of
mile 12. 1 - 8:27 2 - 8:27 3 - 6:56 4 - 6:53 5 - 6:53 6 - 6:49 7 - 7:00 8 - 7:40 9 - 7:49 10 - 8:00 11 - 7:59 12 - 8:26

12 easy miles - ran a little over 7 with Adam and the rest solo. Was fun to get out on the roads and not think about the treadmill and yesterday's experience. It was nice to just have a chill run with Adam and chat about all kinds of things. He gets married tonight and I am excited for him and for the festivities.

22 miles - solo run all around Murray, Millcreek, and Holladay. I felt good overall on this run. I had a goal to not cruise the end home like last week and to just keep a pretty consistent pace and gradually get a hair faster. I feel good about my splits considering how many miles I have on my legs this week. 78.25 miles is the most I have ever run in a week. Now, I know this is not "amazing" to most on the blog, but it is a significant accomplishment for me. [update] As of right now I am actually on the first page of the mileage board. Didn't think that would happen. I am sure I will fall off by the day's end though. 1 | 8:37.7 | 1.00 | 8:38 | 2 | 8:15.1 | 1.00 | 8:15 | 3 | 8:11.6 | 1.00 | 8:12 | 4 | 7:52.1 | 1.00 | 7:52 | 5 | 8:00.8 | 1.00 | 8:01 | 6 | 7:45.2 | 1.00 | 7:45 | 7 | 7:44.4 | 1.00 | 7:44 | 8 | 7:40.9 | 1.00 | 7:41 | 9 | 7:45.1 | 1.00 | 7:45 | 10 | 7:41.2 | 1.00 | 7:41 | 11 | 7:42.2 | 1.00 | 7:42 | 12 | 7:43.1 | 1.00 | 7:43 | 13 | 7:36.2 | 1.00 | 7:36 | 14 | 7:25.2 | 1.00 | 7:25 | 15 | 7:30.9 | 1.00 | 7:31 | 16 | 7:29.9 | 1.00 | 7:30 | 17 | 7:30.9 | 1.00 | 7:31 | 18 | 7:37.9 | 1.00 | 7:38 | 19 | 7:33.4 | 1.00 | 7:33 | 20 | 7:27.3 | 1.00 | 7:27 | 21 | 7:29.3 | 1.00 | 7:29 | 22 | 7:30.6 | 1.00 | 7:31 |

12 miles - 2 mile warmup, 4 laps with striders on the straights to get the blood flowing a bit, 10 x 800s with 400s in between, then cool down. Felt pretty good overall...in hindsight. This workout shouldn't feel good during the process and it didn't really. Some were easier than others and that is always the case. I had a goal to start at about a 6:00 pace and work down from there. After 2 I decided to make a decent jump in pace because 5:55 and 5:50 felt a little easier than I wanted. I backed off the last 2 just slightly because it was starting to snow and the track was getting a little slippery. I hope this workout is a decent indicator of the shape I am in and somehow reflects that I will run swift at Ogden. repeat time distance pace 5 | 3:07.5 | 0.53 | 5:55 | 7 | 3:04.0 | 0.53 | 5:50 | 9 | 2:58.4 | 0.53 | 5:35 | 11 | 2:57.1 | 0.54 | 5:28 | 13 | 2:52.1 | 0.53 | 5:26 | 15 | 2:52.7 | 0.53 | 5:26 | 17 | 2:50.6 | 0.53 | 5:23 | 19 | 2:52.0 | 0.53 | 5:22 | 21 | 2:55.3 | 0.53 | 5:31 | 23 | 2:58.5 | 0.53 | 5:43 |

| 10.75 miles - 2 mile warmup - 8 at tempo - .75 cool down I woke up at 2:00am starving! I thought I had eaten enough during that long journey yesterday, but apparently not. I ate a peanut butter and honey sandwich and a small protein drink and went back to bed. When I woke up some 4 hours later I was feeling pretty good so I went out for a run still hesitant on doing my tempo because I didn't know how it would feel after yesterday. I actually felt really good and was happy with my times. Last week Tyler told me to focus on negative splitting my next tempo by a second or two each mile. 1 | 8:17.0 | 1.00 | 8:17 | 2 | 7:58.7 | 1.00 | 7:59 | 3 | 6:52.1 | 1.00 | 6:52 | 4 | 6:50.7 | 1.00 | 6:51 | 5 | 6:44.1 | 1.00 | 6:44 | 6 | 6:44.2 | 1.00 | 6:44 | 7 | 6:44.5 | 1.00 | 6:44 | 8 | 6:39.6 | 1.00 | 6:40 | 9 | 6:37.3 | 1.00 | 6:37 | 10 | 6:30.8 | 1.00 | 6:31 | 11 | 6:20.2 | 0.75 | 8:29 |

20.5 - Super fun run. I ran a good portion of the Salt Lake Marathon route. I left from my house and headed up the route backwards. I knew I would start to hit the first runners at about mile 9 or 10. I ran until about mile 10 and met up with a group that I would feel comfortable running with, but wouldn't push myself too much. I was just there for fun and for a training run. I ended up feeling great! It was fun to be in a race and have the spectators cheering. The rain was not horrible, but I could see it slowing people down a little bit. Overall, it was a great experience. I feel like it was a bit of a "dry" run for Ogden for me. I learned a few things that I was grateful I didn't learn on race day. 1 | 8:09.3 | 1.00 | 8:09 | 2 | 8:03.3 | 1.00 | 8:03 | 3 | 7:51.4 | 1.00 | 7:51 | 4 | 8:05.2 | 1.00 | 8:05 | 5 | 7:53.6 | 1.00 | 7:54 | 6 | 7:53.2 | 1.00 | 7:53 | 7 | 8:10.0 | 1.00 | 8:10 | 8 | 7:55.7 | 1.00 | 7:56 | 9 | 7:46.6 | 1.00 | 7:47 | 10 | 7:34.2 | 1.00 | 7:34 | 11 | 7:37.7 | 1.00 | 7:38 | 12 | 7:35.6 | 1.00 | 7:36 | 13 | 7:39.4 | 1.00 | 7:39 | 14 | 7:17.6 | 1.00 | 7:18 | 15 | 7:03.5 | 1.00 | 7:04 | 16 | 7:21.8 | 1.00 | 7:22 | 17 | 7:13.7 | 1.00 | 7:14 | 18 | 7:17.8 | 1.00 | 7:18 | 19 | 7:20.1 | 1.00 | 7:20 | 20 | 7:28.5 | 1.00 | 7:29 | 21 | 3:40.1 | 0.50 | 7:19 |

They will likely be a little less because I will not have the long run in the middle of the week like I did last week. I plan on doing mile repeats on Tuesday and a tempo run on Thursday. 13 miles - 2 mile warmup, 5 laps with striders on the straights, 4 x 1 mile repeats with 800s in between, cool down miles. I surprised myself this morning. Tyler keeps telling me that my block is a mental block and not physical. he told me to run all of these repeats sub 5:40 and try and get 5:20 for the last one. I didn't get the 5:20 at the end, but I still feel really good. These were the 4 fastest miles I have ever run. A couple months ago I had a huge mental block at the 6:00 mile. 14 easy miles solo. This was an interesting run for me. I didn't feel 100%, and by 100% I mean the kind of feeling I should feel this deep in my training. I don't expect to feel spry right now, but I had some weird aches this morning. Most likely they can all be attributed to yesterday's mile repeats. Around 6.5 my left quad started hurting. It was not an unfamiliar pain so I kept on going and just concentrated on not using my quads too much. Incidentally, my quad loosened up and I didn't feel it anymore. However, both my hips started to get a little achy. I had some left hip pain back in January that lasted a while, but I have not felt anything in the hip area for some time. Once again, I think the hip aches were due to yesterday's repeats. Around mile 12 my hips were feeling a little better but were still sore. I came to a little downhill and let gravity take control for a bit. I was doing a 6:11 when I looked at my watch. That was only about .1 of a mile and then it flattened out again. By the time I hit the flat my hips felt great and I finished out the run. Sometimes a little speed cures things I guess. 1 | 7:58.3 | 1.00 | 7:58 | 2 | 7:59.2 | 1.00 | 7:59 | 3 | 7:49.4 | 1.00 | 7:49 | 4 | 7:52.8 | 1.00 | 7:53 | 5 | 7:39.7 | 1.00 | 7:40 | 6 | 7:33.9 | 1.00 | 7:34 | 7 | 7:45.7 | 1.00 | 7:46 | 8 | 7:43.3 | 1.00 | 7:43 | 9 | 7:39.4 | 1.00 | 7:39 | 10 | 7:42.5 | 1.00 | 7:42 | 11 | 7:45.2 | 1.00 | 7:45 | 12 | 7:32.9 | 1.00 | 7:33 | 13 | 7:41.4 | 1.00 | 7:41 | 14 | 7:30.2 | 1.00 | 7:31 |

13 miles - 2 mile warmup - 9 mile tempo - 2 mile cool down. I planned on doing 9-10 miles at tempo this morning at a little faster pace than my previous tempo runs. I have been really trying to determine what my potential is for Ogden, so I thought this run could help nail down a race strategy. The first 2 miles of tempo were uphill headed east on 6200 S. so I planned on running those close to 6:50s. I felt good after those and all the way until mile 7. Right at the end of 6 there was a little climb and my legs were feeling it. They got all tingly on me and it was an odd feeling. So, I backed off just a hair on 7 and 8 and they also had a couple slight rollers. I was feeling a little better by 9 so I held a decent pace as that mile was nearly flat with an ever so slight down. Overall, I feel good about this run. I think I learned some things. I know my nutrition was not great this morning. I didn't have a great dinner. I think I was okay on hydration, but probably could have had some more liquid in me. I think I will shoot for a similar tempo run next Thursday and then I will have a good idea of my strategy for Ogden. 14 easy miles This week is my last big week of training before I start my taper before the Ogden Marathon. I am excited to be wrapping up this training cycle. I have noticed one, of many, thing different this cycle, I have not gotten burned out like I did last summer. With that said, I am starting to get a little burned out now and I figured out why. Running alone takes its toll on me. Last summer I trained completely solo. I don't think I did one run from May until September with someone else. This cycle has been almost the opposite. I have only had to run a couple of days a week max by myself. Since January I have ran with someone almost every day. Some days I ran only a few of my miles with someone, but at least I was not logging all of my miles alone. All last week, I ran solo. By my 22 miler on Saturday I was a little tired of running by myself. I will likely run this week completely solo as well because Adam and Brayden are out of town and Tyler is crazy busy at work. It is not a huge deal to run solo, but I definitely found out what makes me get burned out a whole lot faster. 1 | 8:09.7 | 1.00 | 8:10 | 2 | 8:02.6 | 1.00 | 8:03 | 3 | 7:52.4 | 1.00 | 7:52 | 4 | 7:58.8 | 1.00 | 7:59 | 5 | 7:47.0 | 1.00 | 7:47 | 6 | 7:49.9 | 1.00 | 7:50 | 7 | 7:46.8 | 1.00 | 7:47 | 8 | 7:44.2 | 1.00 | 7:44 | 9 | 7:37.1 | 1.00 | 7:37 | 10 | 7:51.6 | 1.00 | 7:52 | 11 | 7:30.6 | 1.00 | 7:31 | 12 | 7:31.0 | 1.00 | 7:31 | 13 | 7:35.2 | 1.00 | 7:35 | 14 | 7:33.7 | 1.00 | 7:34 |

10 miles - 2 mile warmup - 10 x 1/4 mile repeats - cool down. I was a little cautious with this run because I started to have a slight pain in my quad after yesterday's run. It is on the inside of my quad on the right leg. It is a little over half-way up my quad. Yesterday it hurt during the day, which was pretty unusual. I did a decent job of rolling it out last night before bed and it felt pretty good this morning. So, I headed out the door and stuck to the roads instead of heading to the track. I decided I was just going to do 1/4 mile repeats at some pace faster than marathon pace and see how the quad felt. About .5 of a mile into the run I could feel the pain in the quad, but it was not bad. I felt the pain when I would pull my leg to take a step. There was zero pain on impact or when I was weight bearing on my right leg. I decided to do the first repeat at about 6:15 and it felt fine. It actually felt a little better to run faster. So, I did 9 more repeats and they all fell somewhere between 5:00 and 6:00 depending on the terrain. On the 9th repeat I could start to feel that the quad was getting more aggravated so I decided 10 repeats would be sufficient for the day and I headed home. I am a little hesitant with the quad now and don't know exactly what is going on with it. I think it is just an over-use injury and it will go away soon. I am going to ice it up today and take tomorrow really easy. Luckily this is happening right at the time I need to taper anyway. [does anyone know why my monthly view counter doesn't work? it is not a big deal but it stopped working over a month ago. i messaged sasha but never heard back]

10 easy miles I stuck to about an 8:00 pace. The quad hurt the entire time, but it didn't kill. It felt a little better going uphill. Tyler told me to surge a couple of times going uphill to see how that felt and it felt fine. Any incline uphill seemed to make it feel better. Downhill maybe hurt a little more than flat, but not much more. Going to ice it throughout the day and take it easy. I plan on logging 10 miles tomorrow and Friday and then maybe 18-20 on Saturday. It will still be a strong week despite this quad issue. Then I can take the rest of Saturday off and all of Sunday. Hopefully I will be feeling a lot better by then. 1 | 8:50.3 | 1.00 | 8:50 | 2 | 8:17.9 | 1.00 | 8:18 | 3 | 8:04.6 | 1.00 | 8:05 | 4 | 7:58.5 | 1.00 | 7:58 | 5 | 7:52.8 | 1.00 | 7:53 | 6 | 7:50.7 | 1.00 | 7:51 | 7 | 7:49.2 | 1.00 | 7:49 | 8 | 7:57.8 | 1.00 | 7:58 | 9 | 7:57.9 | 1.00 | 7:58 | 10 | 7:51.7 | 1.00 | 7:53 |

10 easy miles - I was surprised by how good my quad felt this morning. After a few miles I almost couldn't feel any pain at all. I decided that I better stick with the plan and take it easy though. By the end I was feeling great and even picked up the pace a little. I am still going to take tomorrow and Saturday a little easier than normal so I can make sure that this thing is completely healed. 1 | 8:02.9 | 1.00 | 8:03 | 2 | 7:56.7 | 1.00 | 7:57 | 3 | 7:50.6 | 1.00 | 7:51 | 4 | 7:46.8 | 1.00 | 7:47 | 5 | 7:41.0 | 1.00 | 7:41 | 6 | 7:42.1 | 1.00 | 7:42 | 7 | 7:36.1 | 1.00 | 7:36 | 8 | 7:31.6 | 1.00 | 7:32 | 9 | 7:45.9 | 1.00 | 7:46 | 10 | 7:20.8 | 1.00 | 7:21 |

| 11 easier miles I was feeling pretty good on this run. Not 100% in the quad, but close to it. I started out thinking I would do about an 8:00 pace and gradually get faster. I continued to feel good so I just kept going. Decided to go an extra mile just for fun. I was sick of the 10s. :) 1 | 7:50.6 | 1.00 | 7:51 | 2 | 7:48.5 | 1.00 | 7:49 | 3 | 7:44.9 | 1.00 | 7:45 | 4 | 7:43.7 | 1.00 | 7:44 | 5 | 7:36.3 | 1.00 | 7:36 | 6 | 7:31.4 | 1.00 | 7:31 | 7 | 7:32.6 | 1.00 | 7:33 | 8 | 7:28.6 | 1.00 | 7:29 | 9 | 7:22.3 | 1.00 | 7:22 | 10 | 7:16.0 | 1.00 | 7:16 | 11 | 7:05.7 | 1.00 | 7:06 |

| 18 miles I met up with Josh at Sugarhouse Park and ran up to Wasatch and over to the U and back. It was a fun run. It was nice to get to know Josh and have someone to run with. I also liked running somewhere new. Like everyone on the blog, I have a routine that consists of about the same routes so it was nice to mix it up. The first half included some decent hills as we climbed to Wasatch. It climbed 572 ft in 5.74 miles (according to Garmin data). Josh and I had talked about holding about a 7:45 average for the run so I was pleased that it ended up being a little faster. Josh is a solid runner and he pushed me so it was nice. The quad felt good. I could feel it a little at the beginning, but at about mile 8 Josh asked about it and I couldn't feel it at all.

6 miles - final track tuesday Today was my final track workout before Ogden. I had planned on doing 10 x 200s just to really get the legs moving. I only ended up doing 4 but still feel good about it. My times were: 1 - 00:29 2 - 00:29 3 - 00:28 4 - 00:31 One of the reasons that I pulled the plug after 4 was that a gym class came down to the track to run there 1 mile fitness test. On my 4th repeat I had to weave through a couple of the kids (which is not overly enjoyable at that pace). I also was feeling a little light headed. At this point in my training, running 6 more repeats could only cause me a problem in my quad or cause some other injury. I feel good about my training overall and don't want to jeopardize it now.

| 6.5 miles - Was a nice cool morning. A little cooler than yesterday. Ran 6.5 miles with Ben. It was fun to run with and get to know him more. He is a good dude and a stud at triathlons. We will hopefully be training for Boston together next year, pending my qualification at Ogden in a week and a half. Taper week is feeling good. I have a lot on my mind as I think about tomorrow's race. I am not going to lie, I am quite nervous. I have put a lot of time and effort into my training. I feel like I really couldn't have prepared better physically. It is now a mental game. I hope I can find someone at the start of the race that is looking to run about a 2:55 that I can run with. I feel like some support is going to be crucial to my success. I think I physically could run with Josh or Chad as they are shooting for 2:50, but I don't know if mentally I could pull it off. I look forward to tomorrow and want to wish everyone good luck as they run to hit their goals. May our legs be strong and swift, our heads be clear, and may the wind be ever at our backs!

Well, I don't really know what to say other than yesterday was not my day. I can try and come up with some contributing factors, but it all comes down to a roll of the dice on race day and it didn't pan out. I hung out with Josh at the start for about an hour. The weather was actually nice at this point and I thought that it was going to be a great day. I felt great. I was excited for a light drizzle. The night before my dad called to say good luck and I told him that I would be happy if the rain was like it was at the Salt Lake Marathon. However, I told him that I would not be too stoked if it was raining hard enough for the rain drops to bounce back off of the road. Unfortunately the rain was in the form of the latter for a good portion of the race. My goal was to hit a 6:45 pace through the first half. Then I could take the slight climb a little easier if I needed to and then pick up the pace if I felt good at the dam and down the canyon. I felt great up until about mile 10. For some reason in there I just started to notice that I was breathing a little harder than I thought I should be at this point in the race. I decided to not push the 6:45 pace and just back off a little until after the hill at mile 14. Those few miles were tough on me mentally. I was having a hard time understanding why it was so difficult at this point. It just didn't make sense to me at the time. I had been worried about the hill because I had heard that it was relatively nasty, but it turned out to be a pretty easy climb. I had planned on slowing down quite a bit for it to reserve energy for after so that is what I did. My legs were just too tired and I never got my pace back down below a 7:00 after the hill. I met up with Hugh at the dam (he was on his bike). I told him that I needed a couple miles at 6:30 to get my average back down. At this point I thought there was still a chance. But, a half a mile in the canyon I knew my legs just couldn't do it. The canyon turned out to not be as steep as I thought it was. I wish it was steeper. I feel like downhill is one of my strengths. I didn't feel good in the canyon and I tried to stop for 5-10 seconds to shake out my legs here and there. Those brief stops helped and I would get a few hundred meters of sub-7:00 before slowing up again. I know my hydration and my nutrition was solid so I just couldn't figure it out. I still finished with a PR and I am happy about that. I am frustrated and disappointed that I trained as hard as I did and for as long as I did and this was the result though. The weather conditions were tough. It was a tough race for me and I will have to qualify for Boston another time. I spoke with Tyler after the race and he told me that a 3:10 in those conditions is still something to be proud of. He said that I needed to remember that I likely took over 32,000 steps during the race and with soaked shoes, that is a lot of extra weight. I weighed my shoes and socks when I got home and they weighed in at about a 1/2 a pound more a piece than my dry pair. So, if I think of it that way, each one of my legs had to lift an additional 8,250 pounds by the end of the race. It is not a surprise that I got a little tired early. I wish I hadn't. I wish that this was a victory post of me saying how stoked I am to have gone sub-3:00 but it is not. So, back to the drawing board. I don't think my training will change much. I don't think I could have been more prepared physically. Another few months of hard training will only make me stronger, faster, and more mentally prepared. I will attack another 26.2 and I will be at Boston 2014! 1 | 6:44.6 | 1.00 | 6:45 | 2 | 6:48.5 | 1.00 | 6:48 | 3 | 6:46.4 | 1.00 | 6:46 | 4 | 6:41.4 | 1.00 | 6:41 | 5 | 6:43.4 | 1.00 | 6:43 | 6 | 6:45.0 | 1.00 | 6:45 | 7 | 6:47.0 | 1.00 | 6:47 | 8 | 6:45.3 | 1.00 | 6:45 | 9 | 6:48.3 | 1.00 | 6:48 | 10 | 6:53.4 | 1.00 | 6:53 | 11 | 6:59.0 | 1.00 | 6:59 | 12 | 7:01.7 | 1.00 | 7:02 | 13 | 7:13.1 | 1.00 | 7:13 | 14 | 7:21.2 | 1.00 | 7:21 | 15 | 7:20.8 | 1.00 | 7:21 | 16 | 7:08.6 | 1.00 | 7:09 | 17 | 7:08.5 | 1.00 | 7:08 | 18 | 7:04.9 | 1.00 | 7:05 | 19 | 7:17.4 | 1.00 | 7:17 | 20 | 7:49.7 | 1.00 | 7:50 | 21 | 7:20.6 | 1.00 | 7:21 | 22 | 7:27.4 | 1.00 | 7:27 | 23 | 7:05.9 | 1.00 | 7:06 | 24 | 7:54.1 | 1.00 | 7:54 | 25 | 8:21.9 | 1.00 | 8:22 | 26 | 8:44.4 | 1.00 | 8:44 | 27 | 3:19.8 | 0.41 | 8:08 |

| Well, I think I ran a little angrily this morning. I rested a few days since the marathon, but needed to get out there to just feel my feet on the ground again. I made a commitment to not worry about my pace and not look at my watch and to only go 3 miles. Right of the bat I knew I was going fast. I was angry. I was upset that I had not accomplished my goal in the marathon. I didn't care I was going too fast because it was only going to be 3 miles. I ended up averaging sub-7:00. It hurt. It also felt really good. |

Ok. So, I guess I am back at running now. After last Friday's run I hopped in the car and headed to St. George. I had packed some running stuff, but ended up not pulling it out of my bag. I talked to Tyler on the way down and we decided that it was in my best interest to take a few more days off. When I ran Friday morning my left hamstring hurt just a little and both of my calves were pretty sore. That could have been the product of running too fast on Thursday and Friday, but it was definitely a little leftover aching from the marathon as well. St. George was fun. We went on some walks, hung by the pool, and played countless games of shuffleboard, a true gentleman's sport! I ran 6 miles this morning trying to keep it at about 8:00 pace. My calves were a little sore by the end and are still a little tight now. I think they will feel better after a few days of running and loosening them back up. I am going to avoid any speed workouts this week and maybe get a short one in next week before I head to Boise for the 1/2 ironman. The rest of this week is going to be pretty chill. Try and do about 6 tomorrow and Friday and then maybe a 10 or so on Saturday. I am actually flying to DC Friday night so we will see what happens Saturday morning. I want to do a morning run by the monuments. Normally I hardly ever travel, but the end of this month and beginning of June are pretty busy. Last weekend in St. George. This weekend in DC. Next weekend in Boise. One weekend of nothing and then Ragnar Wasatch Back on the 21st and 22nd.

| 6 easy miles Headed out this afternoon after a solid 4.5 hours of studying. Was nice to have a little break from the computer. Did my typical 6 mile loop from my house. Felt good overall, but my lower calves started to tighten up on me again. Not as bad as yesterday though so that is a good sign. I wanted to stick close to an 8:00 pace again. Somewhere between 7:49 and 7:55 felt really comfortable so I just stuck with that. I included a few really short striders, or Murphy's as Josh likes to call them, in the last mile just for fun. 1 | 7:54.6 | 1.00 | 7:55 | 2 | 7:48.9 | 1.00 | 7:49 | 3 | 7:50.9 | 1.00 | 7:51 | 4 | 7:53.3 | 1.00 | 7:53 | 5 | 7:48.7 | 1.00 | 7:49 | 6 | 7:35.8 | 1.00 | 7:37 |

7.15 easy with Brayden this morning. It was a good run overall. Felt more loose in my calves which is a great sign. I hopped in the hot tub last night and gave my calves a good massage with the jets. I think that helped a lot. I felt like I was breathing a little harder than yesterday, but was not too concerned about it. After mile 3 I felt better. Incidentally, mile 3 has the most uphill (little over 100 ft in 3/4 mile) and we picked up the pace a bit at the same time so I think that is why I noticed that I was breathing a little harder. Headed to DC tonight and I am going to meet up with a buddy that lives there for a morning run. Should be fun. Headed back Sunday morning so it is a quick trip just for a wedding on Saturday afternoon and evening. 1 | 8:01.9 | 1.00 | 8:02 | 2 | 7:55.2 | 1.00 | 7:55 | 3 | 7:44.6 | 1.00 | 7:45 | 4 | 7:45.9 | 1.00 | 7:46 | 5 | 7:39.2 | 1.00 | 7:39 | 6 | 7:38.5 | 1.00 | 7:39 | 7 | 7:38.5 | 1.00 | 7:39 | 8 | :56.5 | 0.15 | 6:19 |

| 8.5 miles in Maryland with Clark and Mark. It was an early morning after our flight got in so late, but it was totally worth it. We ended up running on some amazing paved trail in Maryland that was almost completely shaded by a canopy of trees. We had thought about running around the monuments in DC, but it was just a little too far away for a morning run. After breakfast we did get down to the city and walked around for a while before we headed east to the wedding that lasted the remainder of the day. This was my first time back east. Beautiful country there. |

| 6.5 easy miles on the usual out and back. Whit joined me on rollerblades this morning pushing Grey in the stroller. It was fun to have them there. They would fly past me on the downhill sections and I would catch them on the rises. On the flats it was easy for them to cruise along so it helped me push the pace a little on the second half. 1 | 8:04.1 | 1.00 | 8:04 | 2 | 7:48.4 | 1.00 | 7:48 | 3 | 7:41.2 | 1.00 | 7:41 | 4 | 7:33.8 | 1.00 | 7:34 | 5 | 7:20.6 | 1.00 | 7:21 | 6 | 7:16.5 | 1.00 | 7:16 | 7 | 3:31.2 | 0.50 | 7:03 |

6 miles in a new pair of kicks today. I stepped out of my comfort zone of the Brooks PureFlow and purchased the Kinvara. I really like the PureFlow 1, but I don't really like the new model. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find the original PureFlow so I am moving on...slowly. Had a good run for sure. I didn't have any pain at all. Decided to push a couple miles in the middle. I wanted to do some speed work, but didn't want to go too crazy because of my race on Saturday. I still don't know what my strategy is for Saturday, but I think I am going to have a goal of simply sub-1:30. 1 | 7:41.7 | 1.00 | 7:42 | 2 | 7:07.4 | 1.00 | 7:07 | 3 | 6:56.8 | 1.00 | 6:57 | 4 | 6:39.2 | 1.00 | 6:39 | 5 | 7:10.0 | 1.00 | 7:10 | 6 | 7:19.1 | 1.00 | 7:19 |

| 5.5 with Adam in the heat of the day at 4pm. Was fun to get out and get the legs moving after hours of studying. Pushed Grey in the stroller and at times with the light breeze I felt like the stroller was a giant parachute! Going to try and get a few miles tomorrow in and then head to Boise early Friday morning.. |

HOT! Went out for 4 miles at 5pm to see how the heat would feel because my race on Saturday is late in the day and I expect to start running the half marathon at about 4pm. Predicted temperature is 86 degrees and sunny! I pushed the pace a little to get a more accurate feel of what it might feel like Saturday. I felt alright in the legs, but my lungs were burning up. My chest, at about the top of my abs, was hurting significantly. I didn't feel great at all. My nutrition and hydration were not great today so I think that was definitely part of it. The race has water stations every mile so that should help. With the heat, I think I am going to start out at about a 7:00 pace and work myself down from there. I just don't know how much the heat is going to effect me. I know I will run faster than training days because of it being a race and having people around me so maybe that will balance out the heat. Nevertheless, it should be a fun race and I am excited for it. 1 | 7:06.9 | 1.00 | 7:07 | 2 | 6:43.6 | 1.00 | 6:44 | 3 | 7:05.9 | 1.00 | 7:06 | 4 | 7:18.1 | 1.00 | 7:19 |

Was a really hot run in 96 degrees. I didn't feel great, most likely due to the heat. But, I was able to hold my pace through about mile 9. Then I started feeling pretty sick and was even starting to weave a little here and there. I had to dig deep to finish and our relay team took first overall. It was fun to be on the podium. [I will write a longer race report later]

8 miles - 2 mile warmup, 6 x 1/4 mile repeats, 1 mile at MP, 1 x 1/4 repeat, cool down. I slept about 4.5 hours which is about half the sleep my body is used to. This workout was tough, but not miserable. I had a crazy busy day yesterday and didn't run at all. It was the first time I have skipped a workout in a really long time. Felt weird, but it is good to be flexible I guess. I will make up for the lost miles with Ragnar this weekend. I am trying something a little new with my speed workouts. I want to try and through in a mile or two at marathon pace after a good set of repeats to see how it feels. I am weak mentally and I think this will help build that up a bit. I would be interested to know some of your thoughts on this strategy. Today I decided to toss in one more repeat after the mile at MP to push myself just a bit. I did this workout on my typical route so there was some change in elevation that effected some of my times for the 400's. Don't judge me if you think they look slow, I could have been charging up a steep incline!

| 10 miles - I needed today's run. I have been stressed out a lot lately. Something about not having a job, studying full-time for the bar, and just having too many side projects all at once has warn me down. So, I decided to go out and run at about 4:15pm. I wanted to simply run for the fun of running and not worry about my pace too much. I think I often rely too heavily on my watch and I wanted nothing to do with it today. I left my house and did the first half of my usual route up to Brayden and Ashley's house. I felt great and knew that I was holding a good pace even up the decent 1/2 mile hill before their house. I looked at my watch each mile when it would buzz and beep and I was surprised at my pace. I focused on not changing my running at all based on the mile split that I saw and I just kept on running. After Brayden and Ashley's I turned north and went to 45th south and then west on 45th. This was a nice decline so I just kept running at what felt like a pretty comfortable pace. I hung a left to go south on 13th east and made it home right at 9 miles. I did a one mile cool down around the neighborhood and called it a night. I needed to get out and just enjoy a good run without worrying about my pace and everything else. It felt good to simply run! 1 | 7:44.0 | 1.00 | 7:44 | 2 | 7:23.0 | 1.00 | 7:23 | 3 | 7:16.2 | 1.00 | 7:16 | 4 | 7:14.1 | 1.00 | 7:14 | 5 | 7:10.9 | 1.00 | 7:11 | 6 | 7:05.6 | 1.00 | 7:06 | 7 | 6:41.0 | 1.00 | 6:41 | 8 | 6:52.7 | 1.00 | 6:53 | 9 | 6:42.8 | 1.00 | 6:43 |

Fun trail run in Park City with my sister and my folks dog. We did the Glenwild Loop. I wanted to get in some speed work so I did some repeats. I let my sister and dog go ahead about while I counted to roughly 30 seconds or more and then I would sprint up to them. I would then run with them a bit to get my heart rate down and then I would do it again. Because of the gnarly terrain they are each a little different. At times I was a little worried about rolling my ankle or sustaining some worse injury. 1 | 10:35.8 | 1.00 | 10:36 | 2 | 4:45.6 | 0.51 | 9:19 | 3 | 1:06.4 | 0.21 | 5:21 | 4 | 1:27.8 | 0.13 | 11:37 | 5 | :43.6 | 0.12 | 6:06 | 6 | 1:34.5 | 0.11 | 13:44 | 7 | 1:01.0 | 0.18 | 5:35 | 8 | 2:12.6 | 0.14 | 15:34 | 9 | 1:58.2 | 0.36 | 5:33 | 10 | 2:02.9 | 0.19 | 10:37 | 11 | 1:39.3 | 0.29 | 5:39 | 12 | 1:35.9 | 0.15 | 10:20 | 13 | :44.4 | 0.15 | 5:03 | 14 | 1:47.8 | 0.12 | 15:08 | 15 | :58.0 | 0.19 | 5:08 | 16 | 1:40.4 | 0.11 | 15:28 | 17 | :49.2 | 0.16 | 5:00 | 18 | 1:17.5 | 0.06 | 20:21 | 19 | :50.9 | 0.16 | 5:19 | 20 | :57.8 | 0.07 | 13:54 | 21 | 1:26.9 | 0.28 | 5:12 | 22 | :06.4 | 0.00 | 23:19 |

This was my first 5k. It was fun to run it with Tyler. I don't know what my place was, but will post it once the results are up online. I think I was right around 16th or so overall. [update] I got the results emailed to me today - 16th overall and 1st in age group (unofficially seeing I didn't have a bib because I was unaware there was no same day registration). Felt pretty good for my first 5k. I didn't get a lot of sleep, probably like most of Utah, thanks to the thunder and lightning waking up the whole house at 3am. I faded a little on the third mile but I am still happy with my first 5k experience and result. 1 | 6:04.5 | 1.00 | 6:05 | 2 | 6:04.4 | 1.00 | 6:04 | 3 | 6:28.3 | 1.00 | 6:28 | 4 | :48.2 | 0.14 | 5:46 |

So, first off, I am still running despite my lack of blog updates. I take the bar on Tuesday and Wednesday of this coming week. To help create as much time as possible to study I decided to stop posting on the blog and doing other little things that add up to extra time I could have my nose in the books. Today was a great day for me. I owe my race to Josh and John for sure. I think I have mentioned many times on here that I am physically to a point where I can run faster, but mentally I am a weakling. I am finally starting to build up that mental toughness and am starting to believe that I am a faster runner. Over the last few weeks I have really tried to run a lot more without focusing on my pace and my watch. On the days that I just go for an "easy" 8 miles without looking at my pace I have been averaging almost 45 seconds per mile faster than I did on similar runs before the Ogden Marathon. I will talk more about this in later posts I am sure but that theory played a role in today's race for sure. Up until yesterday I was planning on using Timp as a test to see how I was in preparation for the Big Cottonwood full in September. It is similar in that the first 2/3rds of the race are downhill with the last 1/3rd being relatively flat. I had planned on running about a 6:40 down the canyon and then trying to hold about that same pace on the flat to come in right around 1:27. But, I messaged Josh in the afternoon and he told me that he was willing to pace me at a 6:08 in the canyon if I wanted. My initial reaction was there was no way I could do that without blowing apart. I then gave it some thinking and told myself that I was capable of that pace if I just followed suit and didn't bother looking at my watch in the canyon. I knew that if I looked down and saw a sub 6:10 pace my mind would freak out and I would fall apart. So, I decided to commit to staying with Josh as long as I could. Maybe it would only be one mile or maybe I would make it all the way to mile 8. Josh and I ran a 2 mile warmup up the canyon and then met John Hille at the start line. John said he was shooting for about a 1:25 so I asked if he wanted to run with us. I figured if things went decent I could try and hang with John and come in close to my goal time of 1:27. We took off at our planned pace and it felt pretty good. I tried to stick to the plan of not looking at my watch as much as possible. I think I looked maybe a total of 5 times in the canyon. I got in a groove, that was only interrupted once by a bathroom stop, and just rolled with it. John and I ran side-by-side for nearly the entire canyon with Josh right in front of us. We came out of the canyon right at about a 6:06 or so average. I was still feeling pretty good, but knew that the flat and rollers along the golf course were going to slow me down. I was ok with that because I had planned on it. I mostly just wanted to stay sub-7 or close. As I crossed the mile 9 sign I started to really feel the heaviness in my legs. I just kept on going and didn't look at my watch. I knew at this point that it didn't matter. I just needed to keep a good pace based on my feel. If I were to look down and see a 7:15 I would get frustrated and would probably slow more. If I were to look down and see a 6:45 I would probably think that is too fast and that I couldn't hold it until the end. At mile 10.5 I decided to back off just a bit and I faded behind John. By 11.5 I was feeling a little better and not in that frame of mind of totally hating it anymore. I finished strong and was stoked to see the clock reading 1:23.xx when I approached the finish. I gave a little kick and passed a couple people in the last 1/4 mile. I am stoked with my PR of 1:23:42. I am more excited for how I know that I am capable of doing what I did. Thanks to Josh and Hille for sure for sticking with me and helping me throughout the run! [the times from my watch might be a little off. each time we passed a mile marker our watches wouldn't beep for another 100 meters or so likely due to the canyon etc. still a close representation of our splits] 1 | 6:06.2 | 1.00 | 6:06 | 2 | 6:15.7 | 1.00 | 6:16 | 3 | 6:18.7 | 1.00 | 6:19 | 4 | 6:09.1 | 1.00 | 6:09 | 5 | 5:58.9 | 1.00 | 5:59 | 6 | 5:56.5 | 1.00 | 5:57 | 7 | 6:08.9 | 1.00 | 6:09 | 8 | 6:07.7 | 1.00 | 6:08 | 9 | 6:47.4 | 1.00 | 6:47 | 10 | 6:37.9 | 1.00 | 6:38 | 11 | 6:49.9 | 1.00 | 6:50 | 12 | 7:03.5 | 1.00 | 7:04 | 13 | 7:03.8 | 1.00 | 7:04 | 14 | :18.5 | 0.05 | 5:45 |

This is the beginning of a new type of taper for me. This whole training plan coming up to this marathon has been really different than Ogden. The bar has thrown me off for sure and I just tried different things. I was a lot less structrured with my speed workout, but it was still there. I am excited to go back and analyze it all after the race.
So, I am trying a 3 week taper. It seems a little different because last week I really didn't log a ton of miles, but I am still going to go for the 3 week taper and see how it goes. Going in to Ogden I just didn't feel great. Even after the taper, the week of the race I still was a little sore. I think the two 90 mile weeks really took a toll without me knowing and I could have benefited from an extra week of taper, or even a few more days.

So, like I stated a few weeks back, I tried a little different taper than I did for Ogden and BCC last year. Tyler suggested, and I had been thinking about trying, a three week taper. With the race only two days away, I feel like this type of taper has worked really well for me. I will know more after the race, but as of right now I am feeling a lot better than going in to Ogden.

| Sorry in advance for the long report.
I am pretty excited about this race. I have been wanting to run a Boston Qualifying time and a sub-3 for a while and it just hasn't come together, but today it did!
The morning started off a little sketchy with a bus getting stuck in the canyon. We waited for someone to pull the bus out for about 45+ minutes. The race was scheduled to start at 6:40, but we were not even dropped off until 6:45. By that point I had spent an hour and forty five minutes on the bus. I don't know exactly when we started, but it was some time after 7.
I knew that I needed to hold back the first couple of miles because of how steep the decent is from Guardsman Pass. I had told myself that anything between a 6:45 and 7:00 would be appropriate for the first mile or two. I knew I could make up any time I lost in the canyon just past the s-curve where things get pretty steep for a while.
So, the gun goes off, I am one of the first to cross the start line, and immediately 35-50 people pass me. One guy takes off at a dead sprint. He had to be doing a sub-5:00 pace. The back of his singlet read "LASP." I knew that a company called the L.A. Speed Project had sent a male and female to the race to try and win. This was the male, and he was flying. (more about him, and the female, later). About a quarter mile into the race I told my buddy next to me not to worry and that we would pass 25% or more of those 50 in front of us around mile 8 or 10.
The first mile was right around 6:45. Right where I wanted it. I would have the exact time for this report, but my watch fell off twice during the race and broke the second time. (more on that in a minute as well). Mile 2 was a little faster. I think it was 6:38. I was still happy with that. I avoided a big crash at the mile 4 aid station thankfully. Half way through the station I grabbed a water cup at the same time the guy in front of me did. Keep in mind this station is pretty congested. As I grab my cup, the guy in front of me completely stops running. I squeeze my cup, pull my arm in front of me, and plant my elbow and forearm right in the guy's back as I side-step/hop over and around him. I don't think anyone went completely to the ground, but there was a decent pile up that I barely avoided.
For the next several miles I was in the 6:30s. I was feeling great and knew I was where I needed to be. My calves were tightening just a bit but nothing to be too concerned about. At mile 8, we came to Mill D Flats where you can access Donut Falls. This is about the only "flat" section of the canyon. As predicted, many started to fade and the lead pack thinned out. There was still no sign of the LASP guy since the first turn of the race. The female had been 50 meters or so ahead of me until mile 7 or so when I passed her and never saw her again.
The rest of the canyon felt great overall. I never really had a low point. My calves were tightening, but I just kept telling myself to stay relaxed and to keep my stride short. Around mile 12 I had an average of 6:33. I decided that I better clip off a couple faster miles where the canyon was at its steepest point down from the s-curve. Right about when I had that thought my watch popped off and bounced behind me. I stopped and picked it up to find the pin had slid out on the band just enough to come off. I managed to get the pin back in and get the watch back on. I told myself to stay calm and speed up a bit. I hovered around the 6:00 area for a couple miles and exited the canyon at mile 16.6 at a 6:28 average.
Coming out of the canyon we went through the light and then turned down the steep road toward the dog pond. We turned onto the new path by the Old Mill and then crossed the road into the Cottonwood Corporate Center. At mile 17.75 my watch fell off again. This time I figured I would just hold it and not try to get it back on my wrist. For a quarter mile or so I looked at my watch and saw I was at a 6:20 pace, the same pace I was at when it fell off. This is when I noticed that it was frozen and was completely non-responsive. Thankfully I knew I only had about a mile to go before I was planning on meeting up with Hille to run the last 7 or so miles. Just after mile 18, I handed my watch to my wife and met up with Hille.
At mile 19 I looked to the left and saw the male LASP runner (the one who sprinted from the start) standing and gingerly walking on the side of the road. I assume he underestimated starting a race at near 10,000ft and decending roughtly 5,000ft. It felt good for whatever reason to pass him even though I knew, by the look on his face, that he was in pain.
I started to feel pretty crappy after mile 20. I could tell I was in a low point and my calves were really starting to hurt. It was tough to know exactly what to do because I didn't know what my average pace was anymore. I periodically would ask Hille our pase as I knew we were slowing considerably. I got a little bit of another wind at mile 23, but it didn't last long. With 2.5 miles to go my left hamstring started twitching. I could feel that it was on the verge of locking up. I knew that if it seized I would be done and I wouldn't break the infamous 3-hour mark.
I asked Hille our average since he joined me and it was a 7:37. I tried to do some quick math knowing that I was close to a 6:30 average before my watch broke. I figured I could still come in sub-3 if I stayed under an 8:00 min pace to the end. With my hamstring and calves this was feeling difficult but doable. It certainly was different and slightly annoying not having the time on my wrist. As I made the final turn into the finishing chute, I saw the clock read 2:58 something. I knew I had done it. My hamstring was firing like crazy and I am sure I looked like a total wreck. Right before I crossed the line I saw the clock turn to 2:59. I was in a special kind of pain, but felt so good!
I know I couldn't have done it without the help and support of a lot of people. Specifically, my wife for letting me run so many hours during the training weeks. I know it is tough to have me away from the family. My buddy Brayden who handed me bottles at some of the aid stations and encouraged me along the way. Also, Hille is the man for joining me and being my watch. He pulled me through the darkest point of the race. And, Tyler for giving me coaching tips and believing that I was a lot faster than I believed.

First recovery run post marathon. I had not planned on going this far, but i met up with Scott at his house and he is obviously feeling better and recoverying quicker than me. We took it really slow and just chatted about both of our race experiences. Scott ran a solid race and I am stoked to see him over the next 6 months to a year. He is already improving like crazy and I have no doubt that will only continue.
My legs are definitely hammered from the race. I predicted this for sure, but I don't think i will run again this week. It is interesting comparing how I feel with the last two marathons I have run. I think I feel better than the other two, even with logging a faster time by 11 minutes.

I loved this run. One of my favorite of the year for sure. This was our second day in Lake Powell. There was a light breeze in the morning and the temperature was perfect for running. I didn't know how my legs would really feel, seeing this was going to be the longest run since my marathon. I was just going to run and really enjoy it. I had no goal.
I left the houseboat and headed up the rock to what seemed like the highest point. It was a slow ascent because it was rather steep. It was roughly .8 of a mile to the top. The peak of the rock formations provided an awesome panoramic view of Lake Powell. I could see our houseboat to the south and Bullfrog marina to the North. Just east of the peak is the main plateau that you can see from Bullfrog and Halls.
I thought it would be fun to just start running the perimeter of the plateau and possibly circumnavigate it if I had the time and it wasn't too far. I was holding an easy pace and just kept pluggin along, stopping periodically to take in a view of Lake Powell I had never seen. Turns out the perimeter is almost 6 miles! On my way back down to the boat I met up with Whit carrying Grey and we walked the last .2 of a mile back.

This was a fun mid-morning hike with my folks in Lake Powell. I carried Grey in the backpack thinking she would once-again enjoy exploring. Not too long after we left I felt Grey's head relax against the back of my neck. Sure enough, she had fallen asleep and my watch read .19 of a mile. So, I headed back to the houseboat and put Grey in bed. I then ran to catch up with my folks.

Met Scott up at his house to run an 8 mile route he had planned out. Neither of us had a goal pace and I know I am not fully recovered from the marathon. We ended up going south on Wasatch up to the mouth of little cottonwood canyon. Scott has attacked that hill a few times in his training this year, but it was the first time I had run up it. It is definitely a great hill to gauge one's fitness. We didn't push the hill too hard, but I could feel my calves being a little tight by the end of the run. Interestingly, the back of my right knee hurt on and off the rest of the day. I reckon all the little niggles are residual issues from the marathon.

Ok, so I got some flack on Saturday for not updating my blog enough lately. It is true, I took some serious time off from detailed updates from the blog. But, I am committed to being back on more consistently. As many know, I took the time away from the blog to study for the bar. I am glad that is behind me and I never have to study for that thing again.
This morning I went out solo for an easy loop. I don't really know what I will be doing for any plan these next few months. My next major race is Boston, so I think I am just going to average around 4-5 days a week to maintain some decent fitness for now.
It was a brisk morning, but felt good in shorts and a long sleeve. I don't have specific split data because I am borrowing my mom's Garmin until mine arrives (my 610 fell off in my last marathon and broke so I ordered a new one). I know my first mile today was close to 8:00 but then I just felt like I needed some faster miles. I have not really pushed the pace at all since the BCC Marathon on 9/14. It felt good to have a little quicker turnover and the last 3 miles were around 6:55. Nothing too crazy, but a little quicker.

It was fun to get out on a run this morning with Adam and Scott. Both Brayden and Tyler were maybe going to join us as well, but they bailed. Would have been a good sized crew for a Tuesday morning.
I was super surprised to see 64 degrees on my phone when I woke up. Yesterday was only around 43. It is the warm before the storm I guess. It was good to run with Adam again. It has been a few months at least. We ran the typical 6 mile loop from my house with a slight modification north of Spring Ln. It brought back a lot of cold memories from last winter. I don't know if I am ready for early dark cold winter runs yet.
Overall, I felt good. My legs seemed a little slow at the beginning even though we started at a little slower than 8:00 min pace. I think I was a little fatigued from yesterday's quicker couple of miles. At about mile 5 I noticed my lower back was feeling pretty sore as well. Nothing too out of the ordinary, but I think I am going to focus on some core exercises to see if I can strengthen my back a bit.

| I took this AM off from running. I slept in only about 30 minutes more than when I run and decided to do a little stretching for my back and neck that have been hurting lately. There is a disease that runs in my family called ankylosing spondylitis. It is likely the cause of much of my lower back pain. Thankfully, running is the one thing that I have found that makes it feel the best. Stretching helps as well and I am going to try a little strength training over the next couple months to see if that helps as well. I might get out for an evening short run but we shall see.

Was glad the rain had subsided by the time I went out at 6am. Met Tyler and Scott at my house and did a 6 mile loop. We had contemplated a little faster mile or so in the middle and we decided to toss that in at mile 4. It felt nice to clip along at that pace. I think next time I do this workout I will go for 2-4 at tempo. I am going to do a little interval day next week as well.
I still don't know what my plan is for the next couple of months before I start another training cycle in preparation for Boston. Going in to my last race, I averaged about a 7:45 pace on my "easy" runs. I think i might try and drop that down to 7:30 and see how that feels. I also think my plan of 4-5 days a week for the next couple of weeks is going to be good for me mentally. If anyone has some thoughts on how to spend the next two months of "off season" without losing too much fitness let me know. thanks.
My back felt pretty good on the run but it is definitely still sore. One of the triggers of inflamation for me is stress. I tend to live a pretty stress free life, but the weight of not having a job is starting to take a toll on me I think. It is constantly on my mind, even when I am running and it should be the furthest from my thoughts.

I am going to go hiking with Grey this evening if the weather holds. Going to head up Neffs probably if anyone is interested.

AM - Met Scott and his daughter just after 8 and ran with Grey in her stroller. I would like someone to tell me exactly how much more difficult it is as far as effort goes when you are pushing a kid in a stroller. Especially when there is a headwind and you feel like you are pushing a parachute!
We obviously were planning on taking it easy, and I was actually pretty surprised with the average pace when we were done. There were some hills and a few windy sections that I felt like I was putting in quite an effort.
After the run I hurried home and changed and went to a friends to help him move. I tossed Grey in the backpack and lifted boxes from a basement to a truck for two solid hours. I consider this my cross training for the month! Grey was a champion and didn't complain once the entire time.
PM - Headed up to Summit County to my folks place and got in the hot tub before heading to bed. My parents' hot tub is a machine at massaging. I focused a lot on my back because it had been so sore at the start of the week.

Legs felt really good and I averaged just under 7:30. Going to do a workout tomorrow of some quarter mile pickups on a 6 mile loop. I am excited for that workout and need to figure out before then how fast I want the quarter miles to be. Met up with Scott and Brayden for this run. It was nice to have company for some repeats. We ran a loop through the Holladay area. I had originally planned on keeping the repeats around a 6:00 pace, as I noted yesterday, but when we ran the first one it just felt perfect at 5:30.
We stayed consist with 5 repeats that were all between 81 and 83 seconds. We pushed the last one a little bit and started out a little faster and I progressively picked up the pace and clocked a 70 sec, roughly a 4:40 pace.
My legs felt great and I was pleased that the 5:30s felt easy. I figure if I keep up my "time off" running the next couple of months with some speed work like today tossed in every now and then I will be ready to ramp up for Boston when the time is right.

Ran a modified loop through Holladay this morning solo. Didn't really focus on my pace much and just ran to enjoy it. I have thought about syncing hers to my account, but then I don't know if there is a way to deactivate it from my account and get it back on her account. Anyone tried this before?
I know my first mile was in the 7:50s. Mile two was in the 7:40s and I progressively got quicker with the last few right around 7:00 or quicker.
I am just going to play tomorrow by ear and see how I feel. If I wake up and don't feel like running, I will take the day off. We might stay up in Park City Friday night. If so, I will do a longer fun Saturday morning up in Summit County. Maybe I will run on the mid-mountain trail to mix things up.

The first little while was pretty cold and it took me a couple miles to feel like I was hitting a rhythm. I felt like I was breathing with a lot more effort than needed until about mile 3. Josh and I talked about how it takes until 3-4 miles to really feel dialed in and in a groove. I guess that was the problem with the first few miles. After that, I felt great. The pace came with little effort. Mile 8 was 7:07 and then we turned it up just a bit and finished 9 at 6:31 and 10 at 6:25. Always feels good to finish with stuff left in the tank.

That route is pretty flat, with a gradual up the last couple of miles. They decided to mix it up this morning so we headed straight up to Wasatch from their house for a 7 mile loop. We climbed a little over 400 feet in less than 2 miles.
After the climb, it leveled off as we ran North on Wasatch to Skyline High. We worked our way through the neighborhoods north of Skyline down a gradual hill and then back south to their house. It was a fun loop and we ran it a little faster overall than we had originally planned. We just clipped along at a steady pace and enjoyed the conversation.

Time was 36:48.91 - which is a 7:22 average pace. I have been working on my "easy" pace and have mentioned that I would like it to sit right around 7:30. I am feeling really good about this goal. Overall, on today's run I just enjoyed it and was in a nice rhythm. I think if I can feel comfortable between a 7:30 and 7:45 on my easy days and I can start to feel slightly uncomfortable yet tolerate 6:30, I will be in good shape. I will likely shoot for a short tempo this week at the 6:30 pace to see how that is feeling.

I am writing this about 5pm and the bottoms of my feet are aching a little. I don't know if it is from the run or the time I have spent on my feet since then. I spent the afternoon up big cottonwood canyon taking pictures of some triathletes. I think it is more due to the run and the mileage on my Kinvaras. I think I might retire them soon. I felt like it was a solid effort for a fun speed day. The last repeat I hit what was my current max speed at the 4:30 pace. Decided to take today as easy as I could. I have not felt great the last few days and something weird happened on my run yesterday that has not happened before. At one point my left arch tightened up. It was as if it contracted for a second and then took about 3-5 seconds to relax. It only happened once or twice, and it didn't hurt, but it made me nervous.
Brayden and I averaged an 8:00 with the fastest at an easy 7:42 down a slight grade. I felt good but was hesitant with my foot. Once again, my left arch tightened up on me, but only once. And, again, it didn't hurt. Makes me a little nervous so I am going to watch it and see what happens.

Decided to give it a go at the long run despite my arch locking up a few times over the last couple of days. I told myself I would just start easy and if things got bad I would stop. The first slight tightening of the left arch occured at mile 1.5 despite running the first mile at 8:42. After this first instance of my arch issue I paid particular attention to it to see what might be causing the issue.
The next "tightening" occured at 3.5. This is where I noticed that it occured only on left turns. For the remainder of the run I purposely took any left turn super wide and only on one more occasion did my left arch tighten up. We increased our pace over the run and even logged one mile at 6:00 to see if speed caused any issue and thankfully it didn't.
PM-stretched a few times throughout the day and then did some foam rolling and hot tub time before bed. Going to focus the next couple of months on stretching and a little strenthening, perhaps.
(also, I think there is a good chance that my slight foot niggle could be due to running too many miles on my shoes so I pulled out a new pair today and they felt great)

| LONG! Ran/hiked from Lamb's Canyon to Big Cottonwood. What we thought would take us roughly 3 to 3.5 hours took us 6, including the stops.
6,600 ft of climbing with 6+ miles of it in shin deep snow. Let's just say, it was a good workout!

| 7.5 (or so) with Brayden, Ashley, and Scott.
The four of us managed to run without a single watch. I was fine with this when we started. However, we ended up doing a decent climb just after mile 3 that was maybe 3/4 of a mile long that we had not done before. I was feeling really good so I pushed the pace a bit. I wish I had that data now. Oh well. I am sure we will run it again.
It was good to get out after a few days off. I wasn't feeling well at the start of this week so I decided to just take it easy. Only a few more weeks with that luxury before I start officially training for Boston.

| 6 miles solo this morning early. Felt good. 2 mile warmup and then picked up the pace a bit just for fun. Didn't even really do it on purpose. 7:20 average. 3 of the miles were sub 7.
I started running less than 2 years ago and today I passed 2,000 miles for 2013. I feel pretty good about that.

| headed out in the light rain solo this morning at 6:30. took it easy. didn't look at my watch once, just ran and enjoyed the quiet. my arch has still been aching a bit so I have backed off the running. i don't want that to flare up and cause me any issues when I ramp up for boston training in january. the arch felt fine on todays run, so that is promising. going to go tomorrow and saturday and see how it feels.
