Won a race (my third this month), set a road/off-road 5k PR, and had an overall great time at the Milliken Earth Day run.  And wore a leprechaun hat the whole time- really.  Good times.  Who says you have to do speedwork to set a 5k PR- I think you should just train for a 100 miler!  Race report here.  Even broke out my oldest shoes for the first time in 5 years- go NB 800's (the precursor to the NB 101's).  Must be lucky.

Great job Jon!

I agree with your thoughts - all the speedwork in the world isn't going to get you very far unless you are stacking it ON TOP of a huge aerobic base. Your ability to PR @ 5K is a testament to that philosophy.

Looking forward to seeing how you run at Umstead. Seems like training has gone really well this year, and you're ready for a great race.

Maybe Lagat or Rupp will read this post and see the light.

I really hope Lagat and Rupp and reading fast running blog

Wait...you ran a PR wearing a leprechaun hat?!? Love it. Hope they gave you a pot of gold!

From Jon on Sun, Mar 18, 2012 at 12:46:45 from 98.71.138.90

Thanks, everyone.

Lybi- yes, I literally wore the leprechaun hat the whole race. Plus warm up, cool down, and awards ceremony.

You thinking of jumping in a half-marathon now that you're in 5K PR shape? :-)

From Jon on Sun, Mar 18, 2012 at 13:15:30 from 98.71.138.90

No, not with Umstead. That's my focus race. But, I'm considering a half in October here in SC and was just trying to guesstimate a good goal (long ways off, I know). In general, the running scene here isn't as deep, with the local marathon winning time ~2:40 and the half ~1:15.

Congrats on the PR and the win!

From Rob Murphy on Sun, Mar 18, 2012 at 14:10:13 from 76.27.122.13

I think you would dominate the Paris Mountain Road Race in December. 20k.

From Jon on Sun, Mar 18, 2012 at 16:01:52 from 98.71.138.90

We won't find out this year, Rob. It's the same day as another race you might have heard of in San Francisco.

I like seeing your success in a 5k without speedwork. Another excuse to never go to the track. Congrats, great run and win.

Impressive streak of running this month. Your range of abilities is impressive to say the least!

From Superfly on Mon, Mar 19, 2012 at 16:15:56 from 74.211.21.81

Jon your ability continues to impress. That's a solid 5k for a 100 mile guy. BTW I ran with an ultra guy by the name of Jon Olsen who just ran a 13:14:00 100 miler. Something like the 7 fastest 100 by an American ever. Do you know him. He's also got your range. I only beat him by 15 seconds in the marathon. Maybe there's something to all this Ultra training?

From Jon on Mon, Mar 19, 2012 at 18:33:47 from 98.71.138.90

Clyde- I know of Jon Olsen- heard about his fast 100. Impressive. Congrats on your win, by the way.
