I have five cute kids. And I have some rockin short green racing shorts- I wear them mainly because it embarrasses my wife so much. I like ultimate frisbee, trail running, reading, and cheering for the Denver Broncos!   And I have the absolute best wife in the world.  And I used to run for the now-disbanded national Team Pearl Izumi- Ultra!

PM- Warmup with Cody to Blackhawk park, then 2x1mi at CV pace (~5:30).  Cody wanted 5:40, so I gave him a 10 second head start then started in pursuit.  It seemed pretty hard, the kind of workout where you think, "No way I can hold this pace for 26 miles."  I caught Cody just before the mile and he told me I was doing 5:15 pace- so it was too fast (hence why it seemed fast).  Second one was slower- I wanted 5:30-5:35 and didn't try to catch Cody this time.  Repeats were 5:16 and 5:35.  With cooldown we did 9 miles, 1:05:20.

Across the board, I am more prepared this year than last- 600 more miles in the past 36 weeks.  5 more runs of 15-19 miles, 5 more runs of 20+ miles.  5 fewer missed days.  The biggest difference is my build up- the last 12 weeks are pretty similar, but I had a lot higher mileage and more long runs in the spring and early summer this year than last.  And I raced 3 marathons+ distances.  My times are indicative of being in much better shape- 1:40 faster in a 10k, 2:30 faster in a half marathon.  Other than a few relatively minor issues, I have been injury and sickness-free since April. 

Why am I listing these stats?  To reassure myself.  I'm still a bit nervous for St. George, but Paul always says that a marathon is too long of a race to get nervous for, since the work has already been done over the past 6+ months.  You never know what will happen race day with the weather, stomach, bathroom, cramps, etc, but I expect to have a good, fun race.  I hope everyone else does, too.

Goals:

Safe goal- 2:35 (still a 4 min PR)

Realistic goal- 2:29:59

Stretch goal- 2:27:30

Super-stretch goal (i.e. the stars and planets all align)- 2:25

I would also love to place top 10.

I'll just say that you are in the kind of shape that I wish I was in. You have literally done twice the mileage I have this year, no worries for you. And if you can run a 1:15 first half you should have no problem going sub 2:30. In fact, if you run the first half that fast and don't do run sub 2:30 than I will claim that I have no clue who you are!:)

Impressive numbers for this year vs. last. You are in great shape and going to do great Sat. I think you are smart for going back and seeing the work that you have put in. It has to be a big confidence builder.

Jon, you are in prime shape and will do very well at SGM just as we discussed on Saturday. Have a safe trip and a great race. We will be checking on Saturday night from Minneapolis and expect a full report!

Assuming no headwind or something crazy like that. Realistic goal - 2:27:00. Stretch goal - 2:25:30. Breakthrough goal - 2:23:30. In other words, do not be afraid to go through the half in under 1:13 if the pace feels good. If you and other bloggers with sub-2:30 potential were mutual funds or some other legitimate investment opportunities, and investing in a runner that has not yet broken 2:30 yielded a huge return on conditions of breaking 2:24 with no return at all otherwise, you would be at the top of my list not just among the bloggers, but among all runners in the race.

Jon I think you've got a great chance to run just as fast or faster than I did last year. However don't ruin your chances on the first half. I ran a 2:25 last year and the first half was in 1:13:40. If you burn it all out on the first half the second half won't be half as much fun or fast.
