AM- Long run part II.  I was glad to see the predicted snow missed us last night, though it did snow a fair amount during my run.  Temp was pretty nice- 33 deg, though there was a strong breeze at times.  Plan was 3.5-4 hrs, 25-29 miles (depending on feel).

Run went fine for a while and I felt pretty good.  Ran 90% on snow/grass again, which was softer yet slower than pavement.  Jeff ran with me from about mile 11 till 17, which was very welcome.  Averaged sub-8:30 pace through mile 20, when I stopped to change my shoes, socks, and shirt in an attempt to get warm and dry.  However, during miles 20 thru 22 I made the mistake of heading out to the exposed Snake River landing.  The headwind had really picked up and the light snow turned into a driving sleet.  I was cold, wet, tired, and pretty miserable; in other words, I felt exactly as I had hoped during this run.  However, fighting the elements really sapped my strength.

The weather improved markedly when I turned around, but right then my hips started hurting.  A lot.  I've never had hip problems before, so this was new territory (then again, I've never ran 60+ miles in 2 days before, either).  The pain slowed me to 9 min pace for 3 miles.  At this point, I decided discretion is the better part of valour and called it a day.  I slogged the final 1.5 miles back to my car at 10 min pace.  Total 25.5 miles in 3:41:25.

The next few days will be recovery and deciding if my hips are injured or just sore/tired.  The whole purpose of this week was this double long run, so I'll take as much time as needed to recover.

Wow. Those runs were impressive! That seriously amazes me that you could do 60 miles in two days! Please tell me you ate during your run and all that wasn't just fueled by a banana and chocolate milk!?!!

From Paul on Tue, Dec 22, 2009 at 17:01:52 from 76.27.122.123

I'm glad for your sake that you're done. Rest those hips!

It was a pleasure to help you through at least a little bit of these past 2 runs...you are still crazy! Good decision to run these early, the forecast gets cold starting tomorrow. Rest up and get that hip and foot recovered.

Nan- I have an exact fueling routine during these runs. 20 oz of sports drink and an S-cap every hour, 1 gu every 30 min. So yes, about 400-500 calories an hour, not just a banana and chocolate milk.

Great couple of days. Sorry about the hips. Running on snow and grass is so much different than pavement and dry dirt trails. I think it would be something like running on sand. The combination of the two have probably just taxed your hips and you need a few days rest. I'm sure you haven't damaged anything. Great job these last two days and best of luck recovering.

Oh, and Merry Christmas!

Congrats on getting that beast done! With my hip stuff, I have bringing in a lot of yoga to strengthen and stretch - give it a try.

From Aaron Kennard on Tue, Dec 22, 2009 at 20:10:10 from 174.51.250.151

Nicely done!

What is an S-cap?

From Jon on Tue, Dec 22, 2009 at 21:31:22 from 198.60.103.104

Aaron- S-caps are sodium tablets. Also known as succeed caps.

Awesome running the last couple of days. That has to be a real strength and confidence builder. Hope your hips feel better!

You continue to inspire. I think you did the right thing, learned a lot, taught your body a lesson or two, and will live to fight another day. Amazing.

Awesome! You are the man! I am sure with a bit of recovery the hips will come around. Very impressive couple of days...

Nice couple of days Jon. Your impressive and very inspiring runs. With recovery your hips will be fine. Definitely prove what you can really do.

Enjoy your Christmas as well. How long are you going to be in Idaho Falls?

Jun, great job with the back-to-back long runs! Very impressive and I hope the recovery is going well.

From Rossy on Wed, Dec 23, 2009 at 13:59:33 from 151.151.7.54

Just noticed my typo, I meant Jon with an "o." Again, great job and enjoy recovering over the Holidays.
