AM - 4.4 miles, horsepark loop w/ Andrea. Had a nice trip back east, but I have to say that I am really, really happy to be back in Utah.

PM - 3.8 miles

These are all of the cousins on my dad's side of the family, with my grandmother (who is almost 90 years old and still going strong). I obviously didn't get the height genes! I sort of felt like the "outcast" all week while with the family to a certain extent... other than my parents, no one else really "gets" me. My sister and my cousins think that Andrea and I are the most boring people in the world, primarily because we're the only ones who don't drink (somehow that is the primary indicator of how exciting your life is in the eyes of younger people). If only they really knew...

Apparently the 60 days of skiing, 16 races and training for the trials, biking, hiking, rafting, trips to Moab, Sierra Mtns, Phoenix, Long Beach, TN, etc. just can't compare to the endless stories of getting drunk, passing out, and waking up not knowing where you are or what happened.

Having paid attention to yours and Andrea's activities this past year, I could NEVER describe the 2 of you as boring.

I think you live a very exciting life. So I guess this means I "get" you. But I guess I have to disqualify myself because I am a runner :)

For sure Jake, knowing from personal and hard experience alcohol is just a dead end street..

By the way I would hardly call you two boring.

From Jake K on Sun, Nov 27, 2011 at 14:38:13 from 67.177.21.60

Steve, Bill - you guys "get it" of course, because we are all runners. My parents are the same way - they have run marathons and are both good athletes... they completely understand the life that Andrea and I have. Its the younger kids that frustrate me... its not like anyone in my family is an alcoholic... and I have no problem w/ social drinking (especially over the holidays when you are with family! honestly the primary reason I don't partake is because I absolutely can't stand the taste of beer and wine)... but these kids just think its SOOOO COOL and drinking / staying up all night is all they want to talk about. Most of it is act and "trying" to seem cool in my opinion. But still, I continually invite them to come out here and stay with me - to ski, hike, and see things they would never be exposed to otherwise, but they all think Utah is boring! Their loss I guess!

It makes me really happy to hear that you two like Utah. So many people mock the state but they really have no idea because they've never been here to experience the amazing outdoors.

You two are anything but boring!!

From Rob Murphy on Sun, Nov 27, 2011 at 19:59:37 from 76.27.122.13

People mock Utah? Whatever for?

From Jake K on Sun, Nov 27, 2011 at 20:13:08 from 67.177.21.60

Rachelle - if I have it my way, I'll never leave ;-)

Rob - I guess they like skiing on ice instead of powder?

From DaleG on Sun, Nov 27, 2011 at 21:45:54 from 71.199.57.238

Jake, if they think you two are boring, I'd hate to know what they think of me and my wife. You guys do ten times more than we do.

Glad to have you back to your home, Utah! I'm also glad that you like it here. Utah rocks!!!!

From Lily on Sun, Nov 27, 2011 at 22:31:19 from 67.199.178.210

Love Utah. Whenever I go on a trip and come back, my heart swells when the Wasatch Mountains come into view. And it's not boring here. This place is fulla adventure!

As for the drinking thing. Drinking is overrated.

From MichelleL on Sun, Nov 27, 2011 at 22:40:37 from 42.98.202.26

Ditto on all! I miss the skiing! You guys are so adventurous. It is sad to have family members not get you, though, I understand that. Most of my family doesn't know the difference between a 5k and marathon. They think I can hurdle and I wear spikes.

From Fritz on Wed, Nov 30, 2011 at 00:26:29 from 67.182.226.25

I thought I was the only one who can't stand the taste of beer and wine. The longer other people think Utah is boring the better.

From Jake K on Wed, Nov 30, 2011 at 11:07:01 from 155.100.226.53

Yeah I just keep telling the people that the skiing is better in Colorado and there is nothing to do here ;-)

From crockett on Sun, Dec 04, 2011 at 18:03:34 from 71.32.235.128

I even see this "coolness" and "toughness" attitude toward drinking in running circles. Before and after ultras there is plenty of time to socialize with others. While I don't feel like an outcast among them, I scratch my head when I hear the conversations and attitudes about how cool drinking is, this from amazing athletes who are so tough on the trails. Oh well. So I don't get them, but still enjoy being around them.

I miss skiing. I used to do it a ton, but after it messed up a knee in 2003, I just have lost my nerve to ski like I used to for fear that it will take away my running.

I heart beer. Maybe that is why I am so slow :)

From crockett on Sun, Dec 04, 2011 at 18:42:48 from 71.32.235.128

I really love diet-caffine-free Mt. Dew. But if I sat around talking about how smooth it is, how tough I am because I can drink a bunch, how I love one after a hot run, people would think I'm more of an idiot than they already think I am. It is a strange cultural thing.

From Jake K on Mon, Dec 05, 2011 at 18:58:58 from 155.100.226.53

Crockett you just made me want to go to the store and buy 10 liters of diet dew! :-)
