AM - 8 miles. The Newtown Turkey Trot is close to my Aunt's house so I decided to run this as my first harder workout of the new training cycle. Tough course - a big climb in the first mile, then flying back down the hill, and rollers for the second half of the course.

My goal was 16:00, which although its not a very fast time for me, considering what I've been doing lately, it seemed sort of ambitious. I jogged 3 miles and did zero strides to warmup. Off the start about 6 high school guys went out hard. I caught all but one a little before the 1 mile mark, which I hit in 5:18. The kid out front had a decent gap on me. Second mile was 4:51, where my Mom said "Don't pull your hamstring!" I just maintained the effort on the third mile, which was around 5:02. Pretty good effort and my hamstring felt good. Now I just need to be able to run a faster average pace for 10 more miles by late January. Shouldn't be a problem :-)

As soon as I finished I ran back along the course to find my Dad. He got food poisoning a week ago while traveling, felt terrible yesterday, yet still woke up this morning and said "Alright, I'm racing today!" Love it. I was able to run the last half-mile w/ him... that was definitely one of my running highlights of 2012. Its been a long time since we ran a race together. Both of my parents are planning on running the PHX 1/2 in March if I run the marathon.

For my second place finish, I won a gigantic trophy (which I'm donating to my sister's apartment) and an even BIGGER pumpkin pie.

PM - 7 miles before dinner on a beautiful, sunny day.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!!!

Awesome trotting!! Good sign :)

Nice race, Jake. Your mom is so cute - only a serious runner's mother would cheer you on with trepidation :) My husband is thinking of running the PHX half too. It will be a fun family affair for all of us. Great job winning a HUGE trophy and pumpkin pie. And give your dad a high five from me. I've experienced some nasty salmonella about 10 days out from Boston a couple years ago and it wipes the life right out of you. I hope you got some pics of the photo finish with him.

It's always fun to find a Turkey Trot! Sounds like a great race.

Are you thinking 26.2 for PHX, Melody?

From runningafterbabies on Thu, Nov 22, 2012 at 10:28:32 from 71.195.219.247

It is on my short list of possibilities before taking maternity leave :)

Great effort Jake - especially nice that you got to run with your Dad - you will probably remember that the most over the years. Happy Thanksgiving.

Nice work as always Jake! It amazes me how you can pop into a race and run really well on the mileage you put in. You have really shown all of us what can happen when you put in the work and the commitment to excel.

Congrats on a very solid race! Love the encouragement from your mom at mile 2 haha

Nice work Jake. Have fun with the fam!

Oh crud! I was going to run the Phoenix Marathon. Forget it now!

From Rob on Thu, Nov 22, 2012 at 20:15:18 from 204.15.86.95

Pumpkin pie is way better than a frozen Turkey. You can eat the pie as soon as your done running, a frozen Turkey you can't eat for like 3 days. And who wants Turkey 3 days after Thanksgiving?

Burt, you should at least get the shirt.

From Burt on Thu, Nov 22, 2012 at 20:21:40 from 70.34.6.51

Ouch. That stung a little.

:). Sorry Burt, it was too funny not to post.

Nice work Jake! You should be ready by January, no problem.

So you mention the trophy is being donated to your sister's apartment. Did the pie make it that far or did you have to eat it at the finish? :)

From Jake K on Fri, Nov 23, 2012 at 10:41:55 from 24.151.97.11

That would be fun if a bunch of us were down there to run it, melody. I think I'll probably do it regardless of the OTQ window... I wouldn't be in shape to break 65 by that point anyways, and I actually think the marathon is easier to train for during the winter months instead of shorter races that require more speed work.

The pie hasn't even been touched yet... My aunt has enough food here to feed 300 people. :-)

Running w/ my dad was definitely the best part of the day.

Nice work, Jake! Cool to see you getting to spend some running time with family. I bet they love to see you race. Safe travels!

Great job, to you and your dad, I really enjoyed reading your report.

Way to go Jake and congrats to your Dad as well. Racing with family involved always makes it so much fun! Enjoy the rest of the time you have with your family and travel home safe.

Nice race Jake. Always good to exceed what you thought you'd be able to do.

Bringing the gigantic trophy through the airport would've definitely gotten you the TSA Special Treatment, so good call.

From RileyCook on Mon, Nov 26, 2012 at 09:21:26 from 132.3.57.68

Nice race Jake. Looks like a tough course and that's still a solid time.
