SoJo 5K marathon as part of a 20 mile run...

  • 6 mile warmup
  • 5K* in 15:11 (or was it 13:11? see below...)
  • Short break to watch Andrea finish and change shoes
  • 7 mile AT Tempo in 37:15 (5:19/mi)
  • 4 mile cooldown, including the last 1.5 miles of the marathon w/ James.

*The 5K course was maybe a little short, but not by much (5 seconds or so?). We sort of followed the course map they posted online, but in reverse (of course I didn't know that beforehand, and overshot a turn just after the mile). It was a bit of a fiasco - I had two close calls with cars. And the 5Kers didn't get any Chick-fil-A! Felt really good on the 7 mile tempo run. Overall, a good (big) workout. It should be noted that the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place overall finishers were the top 3 ladies (Allie, Jasmine, and Andrea).

Highlights...

Andrea, racing!

Plowing half-marathoners out of the way with Allie to clear a path for Mr. Smoore.

Official results!

I demolished this field of small children...

Nice race/workout. Imagine how much better you would have been with Chick-Fil-A as your fuel though.

Tell me about it... I didn't eat anything beforehand so I was pretty hungry by the end and looking forward to it. Instead I got to come home and eat spinach and salmon. Boooooooooo.

Well-done Jake! The girls ruled!! Love that.

Next time you try a chickFilA about midway in the race ... I want to be there when you do, and, this experiment should be done without trying it in practice beforehand :-)

nice. I hear they changed the course on you the last minute and postponed the 5k for 30 mins? pretty wierd. This race has a lot of potential but they definitely have some kinks to work out... I like the 5k / Tempo double. Solid day.

WOOT WOOT!!!! I heard your name called at the awards but was too short to see you!!!! :)

Also, you would think that my jaw would stop dropping every time I see that you have run a 5K with an average pace in the 4s! But nope ... still drops!!!

AMAZING!

From Jake K on Sat, Oct 19, 2013 at 18:01:27 from 67.177.11.154

You need Hokas, Teena :-)

Trevor, yeah - they delayed the start 5 minutes before we were supposed to start. Hence the long warmup, and just turning the whole thing into a workout. Honestly if someone had been leading that didn't study the course map (and run the course twice as a warmup) they would have just ended up in Murray... or hit by a car. After me and the top 3 girls, no one knew where to go, so everyone else was just turning around at random points on the bike path and not even running the whole course. I realize the 5Ks are always a sideshow to the main event, but they need to at least invest in some cones or something for it.

That would have been sub 13 at sea level!

Nice workout, Jake. You're clearly a marathoner. 15:11 in the middle of all that is great. Salazar called me and asked if he could take you over. I said sure. A 15:11 5k guy I can definitely coach. A 13:11 guy in the middle of 20 miles? Best left up to him.

Sasha might say the course isn't certified... ;)
