AM - 12 miles easy.

PM - 8 miles. Did a light "get the legs moving" workout. Also wanted to try out my Saucony Peregrine trail shoes. Ran 4 miles on the outer loop at Sugarhouse, then did 10 x ~200m on the grass. Garmin tells me my average pace on the reps was 4:38/mile, so they were like 35s. Nice to do it on the grass, and I like the shoes.

Before running this morning I went down to the human performance lab at the U and got a BodPod test. I didn't have to pay for it, and actually get my health insurance premium reduced by doing things like this. We have a pretty good wellness program on campus.

The test result was that my body fat percentage is 1.5%. Yeah right! These pods (which cost >$30,000) are pretty accurate, but only within 1.0-2.7%. So realistically, maybe I'm actually somewhere ~4% or maybe even a little higher. That is still pretty good, and exactly where I should be based on how much I am running. This is what the results show... 

When I got to work, one of my co-workers had left a 2 lb chunk of cake on my desk. Based on the result of my test, I think I can afford to munch on it!

You left out the part that said "Body Fat Rating - Risky (low body fat) < 5%. Ask your health care professional about how to safely modify your body composition" Even if you put all 2.7% error on your results, that would still only be 4.2% which is STILL below the ultra lean typical elite athletes of 5-8%. = EAT MORE!!! :o)

Chad - its not a bad price... a lot of labs charge $30-50 to do the test, and it only takes 15 minutes. They also do VO2 max and LT testing.

I'm not a doctor, or even an expert on running. But from what I've read showing up on race day at that body fat percentage is probably great, but going through an entire training cycle with that low of a body fat percentage could be detrimental. Your body needs some place to get it's energy from.

I agree with you Rob. Honestly, I have some reservations about how accurate that test really is. I eat a ton, and while I have at times in the past (years and years ago) been slightly lighter, I've never been this strong on a day to day basis. So I take the results with a few grains of salt. My philosophy is to eat whatever I want as long as I feel good while running! Including about a quart of ice cream every day.

Really? Wow, Ice cream is on my no no list. My stomach really pays the price if I try to run the day after eating ice cream. That's how I decide my diet, what ever food I can keep down on my next days run is all good.

Yeah, I would probably do well in ultra events b/c my stomach can handle almost anything! I eat ice cream every night, and usually eat extra before races. I've never had a problem. Its amazing and I am grateful for it!

Wow, that is low, but I think if you're feelin great, go with it!

From what I've read regarding energy usage compared to heart rate levels, this makes sense why your fat is so low and you feel fine.

Your body doesn't start to really tapping into carb stores until the range of 70% max heart rate(if I remember correctly). Below 70% your body is primarily using fat for energy, so considering the amount of moderate intensity running(and some biking) that you do, I think you're mainly burning fat during the bulk of your workouts, which is means your carb stores(glycogen I think is the appropriate term) are staying relatively topped off, therefore you feel fine each day.

This also makes sense why you can eat so much "junk food" and feel fine. You workout out a ton at the appropriate hate rate intensities to burn off all the fat.

I could be wrong, but I say, if you feel good, go with it....just don't stop eating enough or switch to mainly low-calorie foods(i.e. only lettuce :)).

If you're really curious, you should post something on the running forum and get Sasha's opinion. I've learned a ton by reading his posts.

Very impressive stats Jake.. I weigh about 139 lbs hydrated right now but have been as low as 134lbs at 6ft 2 in. And I wear a 28 in waist! However I don't think I'm quite that low in body fat:) Keep those miles up.

Steve there is no way I am actually even close to that low. I am 5'9" and low 140s. I would have to be 10 lbs lower to have a BF% that low, and I love eating (and having energy) way too much to let that happen :-)

Funny how a $40,000 device isn't even that accurate!

Very interesting results. But I agree that accuracy on the edges of the curve are probably off. I would also love to know your VO2max...

I will have to give the BodPod a try but right now I'm sure I'm back in the double digits.

On Thur night were you running with three other guys? I think I may have seen you. I was the guy in the the very bright florescent yellow shirt.

Adam, I was at Sugarhouse last night, but I was just doing some short reps solo down on the grass where they play rugby/frisbee, and then cooled down w/ Andrea. It would be interesting to do a VO2 max test, but who knows how accurate their testing is. If they let me do it for free, I'll do it.

Jake, Two of the four people I contacted already got back and do not have access to equipment. I'm still waiting to hear from the person that ran my test 4 yr ago. In the meantime the other two did give me alternate options. PEAK does have it for a $50 fee but I would suggest contacting them and telling them a bit about yourself.
