AM - 25 miles. Glad I decided not to run a race today... I was able to sleep in, take some photos at Andrea's XC race, then head up to Park City and meet the guys (Rob M, Adam, and Kevin) for a Jeremy Ranch long run. We did an out & back to the east canyon road, then several more out & backs of varying lengths as guys dropped off when they hit their mileage. Adam went to 20 w/ me, by which point I was starting to feel pretty good, so adding on the extra 5 wasn't too bad. 

I did something different during the run today - took in fluids and calories! Gel and G2 at 14.5 miles, then grabbed my bottle again at 22 and carried it for the last 3 miles. 24 oz of fluid is probably the most I have even taken during a run (except Boston)... so hopefully if I keep practicing this, I can start to get a good feel of what I need to do (nutritionally) during a marathon. Or at the very least, get my stomach to tolerate it better.

There is nothing easy about this run. This hills at the end that I was running up and down (around the golf course neighborhood) are soul-crushing...

That elevation profile looks awful...maybe I am glad I didn't run with you guys :) Proud of you for trying out the GU and G2...getting used to it in training will make it so much more tolerable in a race!

24 oz. of lfuid, huh? Dang, I would dry up and die. LOL. I have to drink a ton during my runs. I sweat sooo much. Nice run, almost a marathon!

Great run! Those hills around the golf course are definitely soul crushing. I remember almost dying on the one right as you hit the asphalt.

I can pretty easily bang out a hot 20-25 miler w/ out drinking anything. When I won the buffalo run 50k, I didn't drink a sip. Probably not ideal, but it's nice to know my body is resilient and can tolerate a size able percentage of fluid loss.

It's really incredible that your body can run that far without fluids. I think I once read that allie doesn't drink anythin, either.

Everyone's body is different, but a lot of elites can tolerate a huge amount of fluid loss during a race. Haile Geb supposedly lost like 12-13 lbs when he ran the first sub 2:04 marathon. And he only started at like 130.

But that being said, I'm trying to dial in a way to get more fluids/calories down during long races. I think it will help me a lot :-)

I just think that much fluid loss is bad for the brain. It just seems like it is not enough to be fast these days. People seem to be pushing themselves harder and harder without any fuel and that is scary stuff. But what do I know I am just sitting on the couch today.

Jakers Jake, you've run some miles this week and to round it off with a cheeky little 25 with all that climbing is some srious running. When you go out for your evening run, do you meet yourself coming back from your morning run? (That's not my line - I read it about some guy who ran back in the 80's.)

I agree - I try to take care of myself and not do anything stupid! :-) I don't choose to not eat on runs b/c I am trying to prove anything to anyone, I just seem to be able to handle it fine in most/all cases. Like I said - everyone's body/physiology is different.

Wow, big day. Nice miles this week Jake. Isn't so nice to run different routes. It makes the miles so much more enjoyable and a lot easier on the body when you can do it on some soft surfaces.

Thanks guys. Its actually pretty easy when the weather is perfect, you're on vacation for most of the week, and not running any hard workouts. I think I had a handful of 140-150 mile weeks back in the winter where I was throwing in some harder sessions (tempos / track)... those weeks were harder. This is just fun summer running!

Jon - back in college (senior year) when I wasn't running on the team anymore, I didn't have much going on early in the semester and ran back to back weeks of about 170 miles. That was a long time ago and pretty stupid at the time.

Re. the race you choose not to run- I was just looking at some of the times from Timp Half, then looked at the elevation profile. Almost 2000 ft downhill- that's ridiculous. It seems Utah is getting a ton of new halfs that are just absurd downhills to me, and everyone is so happy with their new "PR's." Hogwash, if you ask me. I'm sure the RD's do them cause it's what people want, but let's at least admit that the times are completely rigged. ;)

Brandon - I think taking the "do whatever you feel like" approach for a little while makes is good for the mind - and it gets the fire burning to get back to the harder workouts.

Jon - I agree. It doesn't really bother me... the new races are obviously doing well, so there is a demand. I'm sure some of the "super" downhill races are fun... someday I'll run one when I want my sub 1:03 :-) I like the ones like TOU 1/2, where I feel like its a very good indicator of what you could run @ sea level. I just wish we could get a new 10K or 15K (or even a 1 mile) for new every half-marathon!

My favorite scenic half is the Snow Canyon half, but the section through the canyon is brutal downhill. For a good challenging half, my favorite is the St George half in January. It's been around for over 30 years and It's a tough course.

You are crazy Jake! Nice 25 and good job at trying out some fueling. I mean it surely can't hurt to try it. Plus gu is delicious. :)

Now if you start running with a backpack, hukas, and hydration belt you can actually be a real runner...
