As a teacher in the public schools system, I take full responsibility for this.

She was home schooled :-)

I honestly feel sorry for her. But at least she is famous now. If she would just have answered, "world peace" no one would have ever heard of her.

My answer would have been way worse than hers, and that question was like three questions in one :(

apparently she went to Skyline High and was first team all state in volleyball.

Rob, I am guessing we wouldn't be as concerned if we could see her attendance record and class list.

None of the girls could answer any of their ridiculous questions. But Utahs blunder was bad.

Wait, I've lived in Utah and South Carolina. Should I be worried?

From Jake K on Mon, Jun 17, 2013 at 20:50:30 from 67.177.11.154

I didn't realize what a big deal this became. I saw it on Deadspin this morning and then didn't think much of it again until I realized it was everywhere this evening. They should just stick to the bikini contests and leave the trivia to Jeopardy.

From Fritz on Mon, Jun 17, 2013 at 21:09:19 from 67.177.4.64

Ok. In her defense, would you want this question?

"A recent report shows that in 40 percent of American families with children, women are the primary earners, yet they continue to earn less than men. What does this say about society?" Leakes asked.

Does "they" refer to American families with children or to women? Do these primary earners make less than men or do all women earn less than men? I understand what it is asking but it is still poorly written. And what is a good answer? Saying something articulate about society being sexist wouldn't be easy in those circumstances.

I am only defending her because I went to the high school down the street from Skyline and it isn't every day Miss Utah makes it to the finals.

From Jake K on Mon, Jun 17, 2013 at 21:27:06 from 67.177.11.154

I don't like Skyline's track. The turns are too tight. I would have accepted an answer where she said they should do something about that. Otherwise, that question doesn't really seem too interesting.

From Rob Murphy on Tue, Jun 18, 2013 at 05:13:36 from 75.100.216.112

What it says about society is obvious...

1. There are a lot of single parent families out there. Most of them headed by women.

2. The recent "great recession" impacted men more than women.

Jon - this was bad but it doesn't come close to the brilliance of the Ms. South Carolina answer a few years ago.
