AM - 5 miles. Rainy morning. Ran 4 w/ Andrea, then an extra mile with the last half-mile at marathon pace, on a downhill stretch. Did it on "feel" and hit 2:33 with my shoe untied. Too fast! Its going to take every ounce of control I have to keep the first mile slower that 5:15 on Monday.

PM - 1.5 mile shakeout in Cambridge before dinner. The day of travel was uneventful (a good thing!)... we got in, met up with some friends at the expo, and picked up our packets. Ran into Saucony's CEO, and they are counting on me to come through as their top guy on Monday!

I'll post some thoughts on my goals tomorrow. Obviously I'm adjusting my time range a bit due to the heat... but its a race, not a time trial, so competition is the name of the game.

Safe travels. Are you sporting the face mask again? Good luck not running that first mile too fast. :)

From Burt on Sat, Apr 14, 2012 at 17:45:52 from 72.223.93.158

Good luck man. You've been working hard.

From Kelli on Sat, Apr 14, 2012 at 18:07:20 from 71.219.98.16

Glad you got there safe. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts before and reading the report after. Hoping for good weather! On Monday I watched the 2010 and 2011 Boston marathons on TV and they were both great weather years. Hope this year is as well.

HAVE FUN!

Jake,

Hi.

Again...hope you do well Monday. Wish you the very best. Race and Time Trial...not sure I understand the difference. If you don't mind, explain that to me some time.

I am looking forward to hearing from you tomorrow regarding your goals for Boston.

Be Well.

From Jake K on Sat, Apr 14, 2012 at 18:22:10 from 50.138.183.237

PRE - I just mean that due to the really hot weather predicted for Monday, it will be suicide to go after the time I think I'm trained to run in good conditions. So rather than chase the time, my focus is on competing well and placing as high as I can.

Its going to be potentially record high temperatures... in the mid 80s.

From Kelli on Sat, Apr 14, 2012 at 18:24:41 from 71.219.98.16

Crud, i did not realize the temperature was going to be so high. Dump lots of water on your head!

From Jake K on Sat, Apr 14, 2012 at 18:30:32 from 50.138.183.237

The BAA is actually allowing people to defer to next year b/c of the weather. People are panicking! :-)

From Kelli on Sat, Apr 14, 2012 at 18:33:54 from 71.219.98.16

ICE WATER??? Go figure, and it is freezing here.

From Lily on Sat, Apr 14, 2012 at 18:48:58 from 67.199.178.210

I'm slightly worried for the runners in Boston. And I was actually going to suggest you frequently dump water on your head any chance you can. Looks like Kelli covered that base for me. But good call adjusting your plan for the heat. You know what you're doing so I am not TOOOOO worried about you Jake.

From scottkeate on Sat, Apr 14, 2012 at 18:57:52 from 71.199.4.146

Good to hear you arrived safe and sound. Still managed to get in a two-a-day with travel--you are just a little nuts. You know that don't you?

Any change you could hire a dude on a motorcycle to cary one of those mist-making fans in front of you?

You've got the perfect perspective about adjusting your goal to account for the weather. Under normal conditions you may not need to lube up, but you may want to consider a little lub to account for the extra water you may be dumping on your head and clothes :-)

From Bill on Sat, Apr 14, 2012 at 19:16:15 from 97.117.121.197

Go for it Jake, no regrets. You have the base and build up in your speedwork. Patience is key, but you need to be in the right spot to move when you can. Those that have high mileage base build up will always fair much better. Those who only get in their 20's each week with lower miles the rest of the week suffer much more as the race goes on when conditions are tough. Your base training will pay off huge. It's going to be everything you hoped for and more. At Boston, I felt like the first mile moved slow so I don't think you need to worry about going out to fast and I started in the first corral 2nd row. Just move with the right group. Can't wait to watch and read about it. Above all have fun. Jack Dasilva is an out of towner, relocate to SLC, working at the U. He has been training up on East High Track and has put in some good weeks of 100+ he is 27 and ready to pop a fast one. Not sure if he will be up with you guys, but close. If he goes out quick he may be someone you could work with early. Keep your eye on the goal.

Kelli, you always give the best advice. My advice is to rub some butter on your head.

From RAD on Sat, Apr 14, 2012 at 20:31:22 from 98.202.23.178

perfect plan. I think you are smart enough to take it in and not regret it! I would avoid butter though...at all costs. It might just entice the people behind you to catch up and try to lick your head! :)

Oh, and deferring to next year? boo. I'm gonna need all the open spots I can get to register next year when I want to go.

From Jon on Sat, Apr 14, 2012 at 21:02:34 from 74.177.96.130

Sounds like the weather there in 2004- not a fun year. But, hopefully more people go out too fast for the weather and you can pick them off in the end.

I feel mostly bad for the competitive runners and those that want a PR but Boston directors warning email said do not try to run a PR but to slow down our pace. I plan to do just that. I wish the best for you Jake. Be wise. I am sure you will. The warning is well taken. It could be Chicago all over again and I think that is why Boston directors are also "panicking". The year is rain for SG marathon the Saturday before Chicago marathon the next morning they had record heat and humidity and they had to close the race. The deferment had me tempted until they said that you still have to pay for next year and this year. So I am in. So Jake, compete well. No fast first mile. I can't believe they wrote "speed kills" in their email however. That email was quite the warning. Good luck. I hope to see you at the finish. I know you will do well despite this "distraction". PS I will be the one throwing the beach ball to the finish line. You can't miss me ; D.

From JulieC on Sat, Apr 14, 2012 at 21:12:07 from 75.69.162.35

in case those of you NOT in Boston-- the predicted temp is 88 degrees, with 79 percent humidity. We start at 10 to 1040 am depending on your waves' start time!!! So that is much HOTTER than SG ever gets even in the last two years since we start so very early there!!! Everyone will be running at high noon in this race-- except Mutai if he runs under 2 hours ; D this year. : D

Thanks for all the support guys! I'm really looking forward to tomorrow. Its going to be a true test - mentally and physically, and the temperature just adds to the challenge. As I wrote in my entry today, I'm not chasing that 2:17 like I hoped I would be, but I still see this as a great opportunity to COMPETE.
