AM - 7 miles, horsepark loop w/ extra loops around the park. I've done this run a lot this week!

PM - 8.5 miles. Warmed up 2 miles, then did a tune-up workout on the track - 1600m, 4 x 200m, 1600m, 4 x 200m, 1600m. Rest was 400m after the 1600s, and 200m after the 200s.

Splits were 4:54, 33.2 average for the 200s, 4:53, 33.2 average again, 4:50

Cooled down a mile w/ Andrea. She looked good once again running her 200s. I am trying to convince her to run some collegiate 1500m races this spring.

I learned 4 things tonight:

1) Soccer practice has started at Olympus HS. This creates a hazard (flying soccer balls)
2) Olympus' new track is definitely windier than Highland
3) I am ready to roll this weekend
4) Dreyers is on sale at Smiths

Have a great next few days! I'll be sending some supercharged energy your way as you prepare and compete in AZ. Here's to an unbelievable race!

From Jake K on Thu, Mar 08, 2012 at 09:27:06 from 155.100.226.54

Thanks Scott! Send the supercharged energy in the form of lactate buffering or seasonal easter candy :-)

From DaleG on Thu, Mar 08, 2012 at 09:39:16 from 71.199.57.238

Nice job. If I didn't have to work tonight, I'd come join you guys at the track.

Have a great race this weekend.

From Rachelle on Thu, Mar 08, 2012 at 10:24:29 from 159.212.71.200

Are there horses along horsepark loop?

Goodluck with your workout tonight. I think you are right on track for an awesome race Sunday. Sea level, perfect temps, and some fast competition...I really wish I could be there to watch.

From Jake K on Thu, Mar 08, 2012 at 10:33:19 from 155.100.226.54

Yes! "Technically" the name of the park is Big Cottonwood Park, but we've always called it the horsepark b/c the NE corner of the park has lots of horses.

Here's what it looks like from Google...

Jake,

Hi. I checked out the Big Cottonwood Park Google picture you mentioned. Could not make out what was to the left of the circle. But then all those other pictures caught my eye. Awesome pictures...even saw a picture of the ice cream (or yogurt) that you mentioned during the interview. I guess you really do like ice cream! Excellent form (the both of you) and excellent pictures. It really looks like you and Andrea mean business when you race (if that was Andrea in the pics).

I don't know if you have a link to those pictures in the sidebar on the left - but if not, you should consider adding that.

Oh, I tried adding you to my "Favorite Blogs" a few times. But every attempt, I always wind up having this 9 year old appear (same name as you) - any idea what that is about?

From Jake K on Thu, Mar 08, 2012 at 15:29:59 from 155.100.226.54

Hmmm I don't know why that doesn't work - I can't imagine there is another "jkrong" on the blog anywhere.

I'm not sure what that is to the left of the circle either. You mean the white thing on the grass? I'll have to look tomorrow. It can't be anything too interesting b/c I've run past it 500 times without noticing it!

Seasonal easter candy? You must be referring to Cadbury Mini Eggs. Jake, if you want to run a pancake flat marathon in September, you could set an unbeatable course record at the Layton Marathon.

From Jake K on Thu, Mar 08, 2012 at 16:26:28 from 155.100.226.54

Cadbury eggs are delicious. Why are they so much more expensive than M&Ms?

I like how the entire Layton Marathon website is based around setting silly world records, like fastest marathon by 7 people dressed as superheroes tied together with a rope.

Why settle for a course record? I would go for the world record for fastest marathon by someone dressed as a gingerbread man (3 hrs 42 minutes). I think I could shave a few minutes off that time if Saucony will make me a gingerbread man suit.

From Rachelle on Thu, Mar 08, 2012 at 16:34:23 from 159.212.71.200

bahaha!! Do it! And just for the record I ran one of my very best races dressed up as a devil with horns and all. :) Maybe I should go with that for Boston....

From Andrea on Thu, Mar 08, 2012 at 16:56:10 from 67.177.21.60

You should be Mike Wardian's record of fastest marathon in a superhero outfit! (2:34:56)

From MatthewVH on Thu, Mar 08, 2012 at 16:59:01 from 69.27.9.106

Hey Jake, do you have any advice for what to eat before a big race? I am two weeks out rfom the Buffalo Run 100 mile.

From PRE on Thu, Mar 08, 2012 at 17:18:05 from 99.50.213.11

Jake,

Hi again. "jkrong" works while "Jake K" fails. Regarding the white thing on the grass...probably long gone by now.

From Jake K on Thu, Mar 08, 2012 at 19:25:43 from 67.177.21.60

Matt - Andrea laughed when she saw your comment and said "you are the LAST person he should be asking for advice about fueling."

I just eat my normal diet, I don't like to feel "full" going into a race. But I imagine for a 100 miler you need to have the reserves topped off pretty well. I would recommend lots of ice cream.

From Jake K on Thu, Mar 08, 2012 at 19:26:52 from 67.177.21.60

The fueling DURING the race is a lot more important w/ what you are doing, since you'll be out there running for so long. And that I am no expert in for sure... guys like Jon and Jun have it dialed in pretty well I imagine.

From Bonnie on Thu, Mar 08, 2012 at 19:43:05 from 64.119.33.134

When are you leaving for the race? Now that Dean is not contagious (since he has been taking antiviral meds) we might come up to watch the race ... Greg is definitely racing, he is using it for a tune-up for Boston too!

Good luck Jake!

From Rob Murphy on Thu, Mar 08, 2012 at 19:52:31 from 76.27.122.13

Speedy Gonzalez - that should be your name.

Ice cream is bad for you in case you didn't know.

From Jake K on Thu, Mar 08, 2012 at 20:06:59 from 67.177.21.60

Bonnie - I'm flying down late tomorrow night. I hope I can beat Greg :-)

Rob - According to who? And when can I race them to set straight their words of blasphemy?

From Bonnie on Thu, Mar 08, 2012 at 20:15:04 from 64.119.33.134

ha ha ... pretty sure you will jake, not that I am rooting against coach or anything ;-)

From Andrea on Thu, Mar 08, 2012 at 20:19:01 from 67.177.21.60

Bonnie - if you go, will you cheer extra hard for Jake since I can't be there?!

From Bonnie on Thu, Mar 08, 2012 at 20:20:36 from 64.119.33.134

Most definitely!!

From prlman on Thu, Mar 08, 2012 at 23:26:28 from 96.25.110.207

Jake good luck this weekend. And for the record I am with you on the ice cream thing and the Dreyers choc peanutbutter swirl is the bomb!!!

From JulieC on Fri, Mar 09, 2012 at 09:37:13 from 168.103.185.137

I am just wondering the "sale" price on Dreyers. My kids are highly addicted to ice cream. I passed on the gene and haven't found a way to control it so I just look for sales and continue to give in. : D.
