AM - 13.5 miles. 4 miles warmup w/ Andrea. LT Reps: 6 x 1 mile @ HM pace - 5:04, 5:04, 5:03, 5:00, 5:01, 5:01. Did this on my tempo loop (so ~0.3 mi b/w reps). Average = 5:02. Cooled down ~2 mi back home.

OK session. Anything under 5:00 would be too big of a risk on my achilles right now. I can pretty much tell exactly where that threshold is... so I just kept it right there, around half-marathon effort. Tomorrow will be a longer workout.

Afterwards we had a goodbye brunch for Andrea as she is off to Brazil in a little while... as usual it just turned into everyone laying on the floor doing physical therapy!

PM - 6 miles easy. Finished up just in time to watch the meat of the action from the Millrose Games!

I'm on the East Coast, but indoor track.... The Millrose games is streaming online right now on espn3. New York baby!

I'm just about to get in a quick shakeout run to be back and watch the distance events (and the 600m matchup w/ Duane and Nick). Should be some good races.

Nothing dorkier than streaming track meets on a Saturday night! :-) I love it!

Holy Mary Cain! The 600m was great as well!

Wise session Jake. I know that pace was a walk in the park for you, but strong work holding yourself back. And you still got in a good session.

Cain is fun to watch. You get nervous over-hyping young female phenoms, but she is amazing. Seems like a great kid - always has a big smile on her face! I ran 4:25 for 1600m as a HS junior... She would have given me a run for my money!!!

Matt - I gotta be honest, I felt awful warming up today. Almost jogged home w/ Andrea. But once I got going it felt automatic. The legs remember what to do. The thing I can't do right now is really change gears... I can just run a consistent pace. But that's ok for the marathon... It's more about trying not to slow down, rather than speeding up :-) in a kickers race I'd have no chance!

Nice session Jake. Very impressive at altitude. We watched the live streaming as well. Kate Grace who runs for Oiselle was third in 4:28 behind Cain. Allison had coffee with her a few weeks ago and said she was incredibly nice. She's Oiselle's big thing now. Keep it healthy for a couple weeks and I'll see you down here.

I know you haven't been able to train like you want for a few weeks. Don't let it mess with your head, though. You are still ready to pop a great race in Phoenix!

From Jake K on Sat, Feb 16, 2013 at 20:31:11 from 67.177.11.154

The marathon is so unpredictable anyways... All I need is for it to come together for a little over 2 hours! My fitness hasn't really improved in the last month, but it probably hasn't gotten worse either. And I was in a good place a month ago. So I remain confident. As long as I don't feel like I'm putting my Achilles at a long term risk, I'll run hard and just see what I can do!

Well spoken!

Nice day today! Looks like you're playing it smart with the Achilles (expected). PT party - funny.

Great workout, Jake! I know you're chomping at the bit to get in some faster miles. Virtual high-five for knowing where to draw the line and still get in a solid effort.

It's pretty cool that 5min/mile is your HMP :-)

From Bam on Sun, Feb 17, 2013 at 09:03:11 from 89.126.28.24

That's a good workout Jake.

I think what you've said makes perfect sense. You haven't lost any fitness and to stay the right side of the thin line shows maturity and skill.

I think you'll surprise yourself in the marathon...

From Jake K on Sun, Feb 17, 2013 at 09:32:37 from 67.177.11.154

To be fair Scott, my HM pace is 5 oh TWO. Gotta get it down to 4:58 which doesn't seem like a lot on paper but it will make all the difference in the world when I can actually do that :-)
