AM - 8 miles easy. Ran around the harbor again. At ~5 miles I got a weird cramp type feeling in my right quad, turned around and it wasn't loosening up back to normal, so I just decided there was no sense in pushing through. Stopped at 8 and walked back to my hotel. The pouring rain had transitioned to a light drizzle by that point so it was actually a relatively pleasant walk, minus the occasional fish smell.

Eek I hope it loosens up! I know you hate to not run, but try to enjoy a little rest and now you can focus on the mind blowing conference. Here's to hoping it was just some weird tweak that will disappear by tomorrow!

I'd take fish smell about now over stale exhaust smell. Enjoy.

Great job listening to your body. Very smart to immediately stop and walk home. Not worth taking the risk of making it worse.

Good job at pulling the plug jake. Remember to keep the big picture (march 2nd) in mind. If you have to take a couple of days off now you will be okay. The ultimate goal is to get to the marathon starting line 100 percent healthy so resist the urge to do anything to jeopardize that.

Quad strain? Sounds like it. It's happened to me twice now during a run. Rest friend. You're still awesome :)

Sorry to hear about the quad. I hope it turns out to be nothing serious. At least you got to take in some sights like the other pedestrian folk.

Sorry about the quad. I'm nowhere near the runner you are, but I still have a relevant situation. In early 2010, I tried to push my body through something that should've required just a brief (comparatively) bit of time off and I ended up running extremely poorly through mid-2010 and then needing to take a full year off after that to recover (other than a few miles here and there when I attempted a comeback too early). If I had listened to my body and simply stopped running briefly (say 6 weeks), I would've been totally fine. I can't even begin to describe how much I regret pushing through things as my body got so trashed that I wouldn't say I was back at 2009 fitness again until very recently, ie it was a 3 1/2 year setback, all said and done. Based on how well your training has gone, there's no doubt in my mind you could take 4-5 days entirely off, if necessary, and still throw down a 2:18 5 weeks from now. I'm not the same calibre runner that you are, but I do know that listening to your body is the single most important thing you can do in your training.
