Salt Lake Winter Series 15K
TREADMILL WORKOUT (What the what?!)

The plan today was the use the SLC 15K as my last moderate workout before the marathon - run the first couple miles easy and then progress into marathon pace for the last 6-7 miles. Rob and I left around 8:45am and the weather was perfect - warm and calm. By the time we got out to SaltAir 25 minutes later, it was an absolute white out storm (graupel) that made the 10K from a couple weeks ago seem downright tropical. We went out for our warmup and were completely miserable and freezing within the first 15 seconds. Rob said that all we needed now was to add some lightning to the mix. No lie, 2 seconds later there was a lightning strike and thunder. Thunder snow!!!

We decided that the only was to get a quality workout was to either go back in time a few hours and run at 7am when it was nice out or go to the gym and run on the treadmill. The treadmill was actually my suggestion. I'm usually very flexible about workouts (modifying / moving sessions based on the weather during the winter) but that doesn't work when you are 7-10 days out from an important race. You kind of need to do things at more specific time points.

I only have a couple rules when it comes to running, and two of them are: 1) Don't run on a treadmill and 2) No racing in long tights or with a shirt under your singlet. One of those rules was going to be broken today regardless of what I did, so I opted to be warm :-)

About 2.5 hours after leaving home, I was finally at the gym and ready to get running. Rob showed me how to work the buttons (this was my first treadmill run since approximately 2005, other than some random testing in gait labs).

The workout ended up being 15 minutes warmup, 45 minutes at ~AT effort (5:30 pace for 35 minutes and then progressed down to 5:00 pace over the last 10 minutes), then another 15 or so minutes cooldown.

I kept the incline at 1%, even though I know it should be at least 2-2.5% to truly account for wind resistance. Anything above 1.5% felt like it was straining my achilles a little too much. So the workout obviously was a lot easier than it would have been outdoors, but I do think there was some advantage of running in a much warmer environment than I am used to. I probably should have been doing more of this throughout the winter, being that its probably going to be pretty warm in Phoenix next weekend. It was nice to have Rob to chat with during the run... otherwise it would have just been insanely boring!

I felt like I got a good sweat and a nice little aerobic stimulus today. Definitely a better quality effort than I would have gotten outside. Kudos to those who braved the elements!!

The treadmill says I ran 12-something miles but I'll call it zero since it was a treadmill, after all.

I should also add that I was "that guy" wearing my complete race uniform at the gym. I sort of felt like a tool, but what can you do? It was the only clothes I had with me.

PM - 4 miles, OUTSIDE on a pleasant evening with some light snow coming down. It was something of a winter wonderland. My spirits were so high that I decided to count this morning's run as "real" miles :-)

I love that you haven't counted any of the miles and rightly so:) Treadmill miles are like motorbike miles. The fact that you didn't count the miles, saves you from being called a wussy:)

From Redd on Sat, Feb 23, 2013 at 13:30:29 from 67.182.221.190

I may go out and run 4.1 more so I can finally say I ran more miles than you in a week haha!

From Matt Poulsen on Sat, Feb 23, 2013 at 13:36:55 from 98.202.242.213

Thunder snow. Wow. I've never seen that before! Nice work being flexible and getting the run in. I can't believe you did treadmill. Definitely a momentous day!

From Jake K on Sat, Feb 23, 2013 at 13:39:14 from 67.177.11.154

Fritz told Rob to get a picture, but luckily it didn't happen! :-)

From Redd on Sat, Feb 23, 2013 at 13:40:03 from 67.182.221.190

Thunder snow is when you know things are going to get fun back in Buffalo.

From Rob Murphy on Sat, Feb 23, 2013 at 13:41:41 from 24.10.249.165

Bam, Jake - I applaud both of your high minded principles.

I am going to go back and delete all my treadmill miles over the past three years. This will leave me with 18 miles of true running since 2010.

From mike⇒nelson on Sat, Feb 23, 2013 at 13:50:06 from 98.202.247.25

You crack me up! Good call on the 15K, it looked brutal.

From bdase on Sat, Feb 23, 2013 at 13:54:09 from 160.7.242.251

I had to check that i was on the right blog when the header said treadmill workout :). Nice work Jake.

From Jake K on Sat, Feb 23, 2013 at 14:01:03 from 67.177.11.154

Exactly the reaction I hoped for when saying treadmill miles don't count - Bam agreeing (in true blue collar fashion), and Rob having to delete his entire training log.

I'll add in the 12 once Andrea reads this and yells at me for being an idiot.

From Lily on Sat, Feb 23, 2013 at 14:11:53 from 67.199.178.95

I'm cracking up :) count the miles! I ran inside too.

From Penny on Sat, Feb 23, 2013 at 14:16:21 from 66.65.105.62

Jake, you know I trust your advice mate, but Im gunna go ahead and disagree with you on this :) Treadmill training is definitely not ideal as it doesn't take into account terrain undulations and wind, of course. And as for whats more fun, running outside is what makes you feel alive!

But you can can CAN get good workouts on the treadmill, if you monitor effort level, rather than being married to what it says the pace is. Frankly I think speed workouts are easier on the treadmill, but slow and tempo running is much harder for me on the treadmill than outside! Coupled with the heat in the gym, my heart rate is much higher and my breathing is more labored on the treadmill at the equivalent paces (I have monitored my heart rate outside to compate). Also, treadmill running is great mental training for distance running, as I get bored after approximately 0.17 miles.

So long as its not every run, I think treadmill miles definitely count.

Ok, I'll put away my preachers hat. Andrea, feel free to jump in and agree with me...? :)

From Fritz on Sat, Feb 23, 2013 at 14:22:04 from 65.100.192.74

No pictures? That's too bad. Nice of Rob to show you how to use the machine. If you ran at 12 mph with 5% incline would you count those miles?

From Jake K on Sat, Feb 23, 2013 at 14:27:01 from 67.177.11.154

Oh, there are definitely some benefits to using the treadmill. I think heat acclimatization is the most important one if you are used to doing all of your workouts in 15-30 degrees and then go run a marathon when its say, 60 degrees outside like it will be next weekend.

I just wanted to see if I could get a rise out of people :-)

From Penny on Sat, Feb 23, 2013 at 14:34:40 from 66.65.105.62

Haha, well good job. Was having the same convo with someone else this week so twas on the mind.

Good point about the heat thing though... I am getting crazily comfortable running in the 20s and 30s. Not bad for an Aussie/SoCal gal.

From Jake K on Sat, Feb 23, 2013 at 14:41:13 from 67.177.11.154

There's always a good treadmill vs road discussion/argument on this blog a couple times per year :-) It had been a while so I figured someone needed to stir it back up.

From Fritz on Sat, Feb 23, 2013 at 14:41:26 from 65.100.192.74

I think some other people will say that TM running is a great way to get caught up on sitcoms or sportscenter. I also like them because they have a beverage tray.

From Andrea on Sat, Feb 23, 2013 at 15:06:42 from 189.25.156.99

You are ridiculous! Put those as miles!!!

P.S. it is 85 degrees and beautiful in Brazil today :)

From Lily on Sat, Feb 23, 2013 at 15:11:22 from 67.199.178.95

Someday I'm going to use that beverage tray and bring in a diet coke and donuts. I will turn heads.

From Jason D on Sat, Feb 23, 2013 at 15:33:20 from 24.1.80.94

I really enjoyed this entry, but the following comment is perhaps best: "I'll add in the 12 once Andrea reads this and yells at me for being an idiot."

Also, I broke both rules this week. You kind of have to adapt to race decorum depending on place (a preliminary thesis). Here people don't really wear sleeves too much, but I think they make a lot of sense (I kicked myself for not wearing them when the sleet hit at mile 21 in November).

I imagine the men in Ireland would never think of shaving their legs and probably pin their bibs to their bare skin, eh Bamster? :)

From Jake K on Sat, Feb 23, 2013 at 15:36:04 from 67.177.11.154

They hot-glue their bibs to their skin! Cuts down on wind resistance.

From Rob Murphy on Sat, Feb 23, 2013 at 15:48:08 from 24.10.249.165

This is all good stuff here today!

Still haven't seen that twelve added to your mileage Jake. Surely you can at least count the mile we did out at the race?

From Bam on Sat, Feb 23, 2013 at 15:57:07 from 89.126.28.24

Bibs? Only babies wear bibs.

Shave your legs? Don't tell me you guys shave your legs. I'm not falling for that one. Look at Mr Murphy's blog picture: hairy like a monkey:) a real man.

I'll let you off for your nancy compression sleeves and your twinkle toes treadmill running, but if you guys shave your legs then I will be expressing deep concern in the days ahead.

Shave your legs; get outta here.

From Rob on Sat, Feb 23, 2013 at 17:21:05 from 72.254.31.185

Wow, I'm really late getting to this party. I went and adjusted my miles for the last 3 years. Turns out I got kicked off the blog for inactivity. It's been nice knowing you all.

From Jake K on Sat, Feb 23, 2013 at 17:34:51 from 67.177.11.154

Yeah who would shave their legs?!?!

Oh, wait... Uh oh... May have lost my "real man" status. Or may not have had it in the first place. Got silky smooth legs, though!

From Jake K on Sat, Feb 23, 2013 at 19:33:07 from 67.177.11.154

I decided to count 'em, guys... after A LOT of soul searching. I count "trail" miles as real running, so why not treadmill? In a perfect world, we'd just run on concrete or cobblestones all the time (downhill and barefoot, obviously, on ground covered in shards of broken glass)... but sometimes you just have to play the cards you are dealt :-)

I'm actually considering doing a couple more treadmill runs this week, because the temps in Phoenix keep trending upward. Sheesh, what's happened to me?!

From Lily on Sat, Feb 23, 2013 at 20:25:05 from 67.199.178.95

LOL

From Rachelle on Sat, Feb 23, 2013 at 20:56:32 from 66.7.127.115

Wow!!!!!! I'll come back to you when I pick my jaw up from the ground!

Just for the record I did my last tempo on the treadmill before PR'ing in Phoenix.......I have a very good feeling. :-)

From Rob Murphy on Sat, Feb 23, 2013 at 21:08:59 from 24.10.249.165

I'm seeing a high of 79 next Saturday. A couple hot, sweaty treadmill runs might be just the ticket.

From Lulu Walls on Sun, Feb 24, 2013 at 07:05:48 from 166.70.240.95

Does this treadmill craziness have anything to do with your ice cream withdrawal? I am pretty sure I ruined your life :(

From PRE on Sun, Feb 24, 2013 at 08:16:59 from 99.50.213.11

Jake,

Hi. Hey, TM miles for sure count from a distance perspective. Just not from an enjoyment perspective!!!!! Wow - it always amazes me how in some respects I can identify with Elites! Hope the Marathon for 3/2/13 goes well. I know you have an injury you are dealing with and monitoring! I hope that does not interfere with your time. Talk to you soon.

From Christie on Mon, Feb 25, 2013 at 06:03:07 from 74.213.202.246

This thread was a good laugh to start the morning off. Glad you were able to get your fake miles in Jake :)
